Drums #1 (12")
Cat: FIT 004. Rel: 22 Nov 11
Funky/Club House
  1. Part 1
  2. Part 2
Review: ** FIT REPRESS ** Naturally for a producer who prefers to remain anonymous and call themselves A Drummer From Detroit and name their debut EP Drums, both tracks here veer into dextrously percussive house territory. Amidst the dizzying, jazz influenced rattle of Shake Shakir style rhythms that characterise the A Side workout our erstwhile protagonist weaves in desperate vocal strains and overtly dramatic piano and horn stabs which only serve to increase the panic inducing pace. The flipside treatment is slightly slower in its execution, yet increases the jazz funk melodic elements which make it the less a hectic and more involving production.

  4. Shuck (6:21)
Review: Acidic powerhouse Bill Converse makes his debut on FIT SOUND. His sound is a refreshing perspective informed by the midwest warehouse parties of which he was schooled mutated into his own blend. Treading the line between melody and brutality, while never being heavy handed, Converse has proved himself once again to be a true original lurking in the underground today.

Carmine (12")

Techno
  1. Carmine (7:57)
  2. First Found (7:21)
Review: While establishing the Fit Sound imprint affiliated with the Detroit distro outlet of the same name , Aaron 'Fit' Siegel has been careful not to load the imprint with too many of his own productions, choosing instead to deliver material from Marcellus Pittman, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, MGUN and Dungeon Acid. Here he makes a welcome return with two tracks of melodious, atmospheric, Motor City deepness. "Carmine" is particularly alluring, with twinkling melodies winding their way around yearning pads, bittersweet chords and shuffling, cymbal-heavy percussion. "First Found" is a little more forthright, with off-key pianos and scattergun electronics riding a tougher, locked-in groove.

Saboten (12")
Cat: FIT 021. Rel: 04 Feb 19
Techno
  1. Saboten (5:26)
  2. West World (6:45)
  3. Cycle Blue (7:35)
Review: A fair few DJs will go weak at the knees when they spot this collaboration between Workshop overlord Kassem Mosse and Fit Sound supremo Fit Siegel. The three tracks showcased on the EP were actually recorded in Detroit back in 2016, though Siegel only got round to completing finished versions last year. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the snappy, slightly wayward machine drums, slowly shifting TB-303 acid lines and subtle Detroit electronics of "Saboten", to the dubby late night hypnotism of closing cut "Cycle Blue", where woozy intergalactic chords, blissful piano motifs and vaguely threatening electronic pulses cluster around fizzing drums and a suitably bubbly bassline.

MGUN EP (12")
Cat: FIT 011. Rel: 25 Jul 14
Techno
  1. Wide Eye
  2. Debit
  3. MSC
Review: Though he first appeared on Wild Oats as part of NSNT PRJCT back in 2010, the music Manuel Gonzales produces as MGUN has largely surfaced on labels outside of his hometown of Detroit, with Don't Be Afraid, Berceuse Heroique and The Trilogy Tapes among them. His arrival on Aaron Siegel's Fit Sounds label is most welcome then; with the 3 track self titled EP proving further compelling evidence that Gonzales is becoming one of Detroit's current greats. There's a marauding nature to the bassline and rhythms in "Wide Eye" that will appeal to Jamal Moss fans, whilst "Debit" drags you down a gnarly acid rabbit hole. It's the B Side cut that really impresses however, with "MSC" seemingly embracing some of the experimental urges Gonzales has when recording material under the Savant guise with some truly atmospheric results.

Deep House
  1. Marcus Mixx - "Salut The Noize With A Laugh"
  2. Fit - "Kali"
Review: Coming from the somewhat shadowy and increasingly collectible Detroit crew Fit, this curious slab of wax delivers two starkly unique variations of raw analogue house. Marcus Mixx is on untouchable form with the twisted thump of "Salut The Moize With A Laugh". The titular laugh messes around with delirious pulses of synth and drunken hats for one of the weirdest jack tracks you're likely to hear this year. Fit takes over for the flip side for a thoroughly stripped down track that capitalises on an endlessly looping note, while the scuffed beat cycles around it in a wonderfully scatty fashion.

  1. Metal Surface Repair (9:43)
  2. Metal Surface Repair (Acidic mix) (5:33)
  3. Metal Surface Repair (Synthetic mix) (4:34)
Review: If your metallic fascias need a bit of work, the S&M Trading Co - a newly incorporated collaboration between Fit Sound supremo Aaaron "Fit" Siegel and Norwegian eccentric DJ Sotofett - is here to help. This first 12" does a good job in showcasing their (imaginary) services, primarily via the epic and mind-altering A-side "Metal Surface Repair". It's sparse, spacey, undulating and intoxicating, with the action focused on clanging machine percussion hits, intergalactic chords and a restless TB-303 acid line. Sotofett handles remix duties on the flipside, first exploring wilder acid house pastures on the aptly named "Acidic Mix" before taking us on a druggy ambient acid trip on the excellent "Synthetic Mix".

Deep House
  1. Trackin (6:16)
  2. Drummer Downstairs (3:17)
  3. Frayed (8:15)
Review: Anthony Shakir comes correct on the Fit Sounds imprint with three tracks that veer between the many strands of Detroit machine funk business. Proceedings commence with "Trackin", an unadulterated slice of rawness that leans on disco via filtered synth flourishes that burrow deep, with the thumping bass drums and soaring string section giving the track that motor city hue. The very loud and very good beatdownisms of "That Drumming Track" follows with a multiplicity of layered drums raining down and somehow achieving a fractured rhythmic thud; think Roska collaborating with Kyle Hall. On the flip Shake goes deep with the slow mo, off kilter burn of "Frayed" which sounds almost wrong at 33rpm during the opening sparse moments. The arrival of a slowly ascending organ sound that mutates brilliantly is the point where jaws drop as the track unfolds in stunning fashion.

Deep House
  1. Tonite (OG mix)
  2. Tonite (DD mix)
Review: Ever rising in his presence on the global house and techno platform, Aaron Siegel gets his breakthrough "Tonite" jam revised with a little help from Omar-S and moves it over from FXHE to his own Fit Sound imprint for another release. The "OG Mix" is a chunky, bumping house cut with brash chords, cheeky squeaks and overall big room dynamics, despite the slower groove the track actually rides at. The "DD Mix" is more restrained, layering on interlocking melodies of plastic strings and poignant croons from L'Renee for an altogether more sultry end result.

Deep House
  1. Lowdown
  2. Trashd Funk
  3. Code Black
  4. Lumena
Review: Of all the delightful curveballs FXHE pulled last year, coaxing 90s Swedish techno producer Patrik Sjeren out of hiding to contribute to a Omar S release was the least expected. Detroit obviously favours the producer as Aaron Siegel's FIT Sounds operation now presents a full eponymously titled EP of new Sjeren material. The Swede's dalliance with Omar S on that 998 12" last year feels like it's inspired him as the four tracks here sound as diverse as a FXHE release and are held together cohesively by Sjeren's veteran production touch. Lead track "Lowdown" throws around a fractured female vocal edit and playfully shining keys over a smooth yet bumping house groove whilst the driving "Trashed Funk" adopts a similar approach but feels a whole lot dirtier. Flip over and Patrik switches the emphasis to techno, heading down the analogue wormhole on "Code Black" and pulling us sideways with the hypnotic warblings of "Lumena".
