Reconbination EP
Reconbination EP (limited 12")
Cat: FE 058. Rel: 19 May 21
Techno
  1. Spatial Plucks (5:13)
  2. Xsd (4:55)
  3. Reconbination (3:17)
  4. Rev (Stack Refix) (4:01)
Review: Manchester's Robbie Mecrow is an acid and electro specialist who is therefore a perfect fit for the interplanetary sounds of Furthur Electronix. This marks his fourth EP on a fourth different label in three years, which might be a slow pace but the music is worth waiting for. There is roomy, IDM inspired atmosphere on 'Spatial Plucks' then more jungle leaning breaks and glistening metallic surfaces on 'Xsd'. The fantastic 'Reconbination' might just be the EP highlight however with its broad bass, twisted drum loops and forlorn sense of mood. 'Rev' (Stack Refix) is an airy, ambient laced closer that suspends you in a techno dreamscape.

Review: Amid a ton of releases on the likes of Wrong Island and CPU in recent months, the legendary recovering optimist Automatic Tasty now flings a full album upside our faces. His ninth long'un, as always it's both jaunty and contemplative in equal measure as he tweaks his machines to create bubbling little narratives that weave in and out of the shades. At one moment you're weeping to a sartorial lament ("Illegal Trousers"), the next you're skipping on clouds on a secret level in your favourite childhood side-scroller ('One Of These Days'), the next you're doing the locomotion on Tomorrow's World ('Dialup') the next you're rolling out the lino for a slo-mo robo dance ('Scaldy Fiver') Slinky, cheery, honest analog fun; You'll Never Work In This Town Again isn't a threat... It's a promise

Review: Michigan artist John Beltran has had a long and winding career that has seen him put out shimmering ambient electronics, organic techno and also find some of his tracks used on high-profile HBO TV shows. Aesthete is his latest offering and once again it pairs the synthetic with the natural in beautiful ways. His melodies are bright and beautiful, his drums float in mid-air and the overall mood of his music is painfully melancholic. This album marks the American's debut on the Furthur Electronix label and a fine one it is too.

Review: Thanks to a swathe of superb EPs over the last few years for the likes of 2020 Vision, Lunar Disko, Further Electronix, Altered Sense and Unknown to the Unknown, long-serving electro producer Cignol is enjoying something of a career renaissance. As a result, some of his earliest releases have become in-demand and hard-to-find - hence this reissue of his long-overlooked, but utterly brilliant, 2010 debut album, Switching For a Living. Offering an attractive mixture of sci-fi seeped, far-sighted tracks informed by 1990s IDM, deep electro, downtempo, ambient and acid, it's a coherent but varied affair that has well and trily lasted the test and time - thanks, in part, to Cignol's intention to make it a genuine "listening album". Recommended.

Review: Cult 48 has been methodically unfurling a staggeringly impressive catalogue over the past year or two, with a spread of self-released CDrs subsequently released by Furthur Electronix who clearly know good electro when they hear it. To be honest this music borders more on Skam Records-esque electronica, taking machine funk into experimental territory without losing sight of the inspirational source material. On Underground Signals From An Unknown Place, you can hear the ghost of Boards Of Canada on 'Orange Moss 89' and earliest Autechre twitching through 'Nothing Is Lost Now', but those are obvious reference points and shouldn't detract from Cult 48's own overall artistic stamp. With plenty of variety across the release and an unrelenting high watermark for quality, this is essential listening for any lover of crunchy, leftfield electro.

Techno
  1. Dream Of The Sun (5:57)
  2. Evolution (5:46)
  3. Exit (5:16)
  4. Hexagram (5:47)
Review: Jack Smooth is the man behind the sounds, which are rooted in classic techno, electro and IDM sounds but with plenty of contemporary stylings. It's a post-rave, acid-laced and breakbeat fuelled comedown to kick off with before 'Evolution' draws out the 303 in bendy, hypnotic fashion over a prickly set of drums. There is more jacked up and angular tackle on 'Exit' then a jungle influenced workout on 'Hexagram' closes in top class fashion.

  4. September (5:31)
Review: Responsible for the production of many classic UK hardcore records throughout the early '90s, Ron Wells' style of production is instantly recognisable. Having a multitude of releases under the Jack Smooth moniker as well as 20 Hurts, 4 Reel and Celestial Circuits in recent times, his latest one here comes courtesy of Brighton's Furthur Electronix titled PH Scales - the third part in a series. Features four cuts rich in old school analogue soul: from the emotive acid wiggle of 'Dreamstate' or 'Erecaecous' on the A side, which will hypnotise you into submission with their suave 303 antics to a backdrop of ethereal elements. Over on the flip, it's all about the evocative sunset breaks of "September".

Review: Furthur Electronix has always been a highly recommended label but they seem to be in a purple patch right now with a wealth of essentials releases all dropping in quick fashion. It is Kreggo who steps up this time with a new limited run 12" that follows his last on the label last year. The Milan based artist is eclectic and throughly underground and is the brain behind the Art-Aud label and the cult Secret Rave series. His electro sound here is raw and rugged, with bumping drums, fixing synths and flashes of acid all making these standout cuts.

Review: Brighton imprint Furthur Electronix continues full steam ahead with its prolific output this year, and it's a big week for them. Alongside a great EP by Aussie Lou Karsh, we have this new one by Greek producer George Kontogiannidis aka Pera Sta Ori, who has racked up some impressive releases thus far on Musar, Brokntoys and Yellow Machines. As on previous works, the Sick Apian EP further explores Kontogiannidis' love of classic UK rave sounds. For instance A side cut 'Antio Zoi (TGRCCC)' utilises pitch shifted hardcore breaks underpinned by a dystopian electro atmosphere. Over on the flip, its '95 all over again on the breakneck junglist stepper 'Xypna' followed by the complex and hypnotic riddims of 'KodS0520 Fyllorroo'.

Review: Tusken Raiders is of course Michael Paradinas, the man behind Planet Mu as well as many of his own killer productions. Famously, this alias had to be put to sleep after George Lucas's lawyers found out about it after one of his releases on Clear back in the day, so he renamed himself Rude Ass Tinker - an anagram the original alias. But now it is back out of retirement for this collection on Further Electronix of all the recent EPs he has released. The tracks are built on brilliantly squelchy electro funk, cosmic techno, brain dance melodies abound and the whole thing comes from a world controlled by AI and robots, but never loses sight of the dancefloor.
