Dia (8:41)
Tempr (5:55)
Sign (9:20)
Review: With just one former release that was also on the Giegling imprint, Ateq makes a welcome return with a second single two years later that builds on everything great about the Weimar based label. The first track "Dia" stutters and struts in a minimal narrative made of poised drum pops and subtle hum, keeping things interesting enough away from the dancefloor to avoid becoming a dry minimal techno track. "Tempr" has a more defined structure, but still occupies an esoteric space filled with sorrowful chords played quietly amidst the beats. "Sign" however is the real beast of the record, going deep into sound design with the range of beats on offer, notably sporting some live hits in amongst the electronics and rolling with a played-out feel that adds energy and danger to the mix.

Review: Dwig - short for Die Wiese Im Garten or The Meadow in the Garden - has remained a notable presence on the Giegling roster; he was responsible for the label's second ever release, Fettwanzenblues, and has contributed two further 12?s to the Giegling cause. Dwig's Forget The Pink Elephant is a charming blend of kooky sampling and backyard sound design that combines bent and out of shape strings with sombre piano dissonance, statically charged minimalisms, jazzy interludes and acoustically sculpted instrumentals (see "Endtitle"). A perfect soundtrack for a Saturday morning.

Review: Edward's last outing on Giegling, Into A Better Future, was arguably one of the most overlooked - if not underrated, given the positive reviews - of 2014. Happily, this EP is another cracker. He begins with "Open", an innocent-sounding chunk of pure white deep house blessed with a bubbling bassline and Boards of Canada style melodies. "Birds" is deeper, wonkier and arguably even more evocative, with Autechre-goes-house beats and yearning, bittersweet chords. Flip for the clicking, swirling, almost enveloping deep house throb of "Do It" - all quietly relentless rhythms, tech-house influences and off-kilter vocal samples - and the fizzing, low-slung, bluesy deep house brilliance of "She Says".

True Dialogue
Review: Giegling is a Weimar based label which since 2009 has creatively lifted micro house, deep house and dub techno from its bemoaned doldrums. Done badly, it sounds like a clumsy baby hitting pots and pans - done well it sounds like Green Amber by Edward. "Following You" sees unsettling piano keys rise in tension to create a melancholia that so often drugs many of Giegling's releases, while "Slipslow" expels breathes of resonating synths that are blown with cold full cheeks. "True Dialogue" remains dry and straight for its entirety, with a playful cowbell adding some swing to its staunch and muscular oomph. One for the after-after party.

Review: According to a recent interview he did with Resident Advisor, Gilles Aiken's second album - his debut dropped on White back in 2012 - was inspired by listening to 70's and '80s punk, new wave and new age music. While these influences aren't always that obvious on Into a Better Future, there are certainly glimpses of each within its pleasing mix of off-kilter deep house, bleep-heavy jams and ambient interludes. The dusty production style and moody atmosphere, prevalent throughout, does have a post-punk feel, though. Regardless, it's an impressive set, with highlights including the early Orbital style breakbeat shuffle of "Hecstatic" and the future voodoo density of "Let's Go".

Shadow (6:12)
Track 2 (16:14)
Review: Evergreen innovators Giegling tickle the triple-G machine once more with this delicious double A from Konstantin. "Shadow" is a timeless ballad to the stars with a brisk breakbeat, delicate vocals and emotional tautness that whisks you back with a strong sense of northern exposure. Its beauty is cleverly balanced with a much wilier, slice of jazz theory as a sax lick rises, twists and eventually melts over a steady broken rhythm. G's are good.

Review: It seems fitting that the cover of Kettenkarussell's long-promised debut album - talked about since their impressive 2009 debut single I Believe You -features a picture of a rollercoaster. While "Easy Listening" doesn't replicate the white-knuckle thrills of riding a rollercoaster, its' picturesque blends of piano-laden ambience, hazy downtempo grooves, thick-set deep house and deeper, tech-tinged material is in turns undulating and - in the case of "Chords of Banana" and the Reichian brilliance of "Spirale" - strangely queasy. It all adds up to a quietly impressive debut album, rich with interesting ideas and curious instrumentation, that should enhance the duo's rising reputation.

Of Course (Ezekiel Honig remix)
Review: Two years on from the release of Kettenkarussell's acclaimed debut album, Easy Listening, Giegling has handed over the parts to a quartet of highly regarded remixers. Lawrence steps up first, serving up an atmospheric, softly spoken techno revision of "Of Course" that bristles with hypnotic intent. One-time Playhouse regular Losoul - now celebrating two decades in music production - delivers a deliciously tactile, acid-driven rework of "Konstant Sleep", before Vril fuses grandiose ambient textures, looped riffs and head-nodding techno beats on a fine remix of "Spirale". Finally, New York's Ezekiel Honig reaches for the lo-fi piano samples, dusty textures and dub techno influences on his inspired remake of "Of Course".

Review: At the tail end of 2016, Giegling released a fine EP of remixes of tracks from Kettenkarussell's 2014 debut album, Easy Listening. It seemed like a strange move at the time (even if the remixes were excellent), but thanks to the appearance of this sophomore album now makes perfect sense. As follow-ups go, Insecurity Guard is rather impressive. Deep, atmospheric and, at times, otherworldly, the album flits between crackling, ambient-influenced haziness, locked-in dancefloor wooziness, twinkling, string-laden techno, dubbed-out goodness (the hissing goodness of "Your Hands") and the kind of loose and languid fusions of electronic and acoustic instrumentation that defy easy categorization (see sublime closer "Brueder").

Review: Given the length of his career and the hushed tones he's spoken of within the underground techno community, it's perhaps surprising that Lawrence has never released music on Giegling before. Here he joins the much-admired label following a couple of years spent putting out music on Mule. He expertly sets the tone via the soft-touch cymbals, hypnotic kick-drums and bleeping melodies of "Moonlight", before upping the intensity a little on the sparse, bass-heavy minimal techno throb of "Bonfire". Lawrence once again reaches for the echo-laden computer bleeps on the undeniably trippy, early morning hypnotism of "Intereference", while "Bonfire (Reprise)" is a spaced-out DJ tool built around extended ambient passages, restless sub-bass and loose-limbed broken techno drums.

Whether it's the armchair melancholia of 'Blue Moon' or the quirky microhouse of 'Jacob's Ladder', through to mesmerising downbeat journeys like 'Epiphany' or the late night mood music of 'Hamburg' (an ode to his beloved hometown) - Epiphany sees the Dial co-head cover a wide selection of moods and grooves and the many shades of deep house music, all in his inimitable and understated style throughout.

Review: Leafar Legov has a long association with Giegling, having previously released a couple of fine EPs and an album as part of Kettenkarussell. Here, he delivers his first solo release for the esteemed German imprint, laying down a quintet of horizontally inclined tracks that put hazy atmospherics and crackling textures at the heart of the action. He begins with the woozy, dreamy ambience of "Talk", before fusing drawn-out chords, twinkling pianos, soft-focus vocal snippets and hip-hop influenced beats on the deliciously evocative "Years". On the flip, you'll find the smoky trip-hop revivalism of "Ladder", the enveloping, piano-heavy ambience of "Mxhome", and the moody field records and one-note drone of "Skit".

Last year, Giegling regular Leafar Legov (real name Rafel Vogel) delivered his first ever full-length release, a low-key tape of lengthy ambient explorations entitled "Never Ending Beginnings". Six months on he returns with "Mirror", his "official" debut album. He sets the tone with the swelling orchestral ambience of "Intro", before brilliantly joining the dots between ambient and jazz on the wonderfully string-laden simmer of "Wave". As the album progresses, Vogel sashays between ultra-deep synth-pop, jazzy downtempo soundscapes, ultra-deep and hypnotic house, revivalist DJ Cam style trip-hop, ambient techno and more seductive, jazz-inspired late-night warmth. In other words, it's a rather fine album from an artist on the rise.

Review: Rafael "Robert Oh" Vogel's first outing under the Leafar Legov alias, 2016's Family, was widely regarded as a wonderfully atmospheric collection of dusty deep house treats. Happily, this belated follow-up is similarly magical and intoxicating in tone. Tending towards to more horizontal end of the spectrum but with more than enough dancefloor chops, all five tracks strike a balance between ultra-deep wooziness and eyes-closed blissfulness. Check, for example, the gentle dub techno hum of "Force Majeure", the two-step jazz-house deepness of sublime opener "Peace By Peace", and the fluid piano flourishes and spine-tingling vocal samples of deep tech-house shuffler "Ourloveisstrong". Vogel also finds space for a couple of crackling downtempo cuts, of which yearning closer "We Don't Have To Talk About" ranking amongst the EP's many highlights.

Review: The Giegling label is no stranger to implementing conceptual ideas within the constructs of their output and Sudstadt EP, their 12th release, offers an intriguing central idea. Each of the four producers here - Giegling regulars Vril, Prince Of Denmark and Leafar Legov along with debutant Herr Koreander - grew up in Hannover and this 12" offers them a chance to portray their individual memories through the medium of music. Legov and Koreander commence and end the release in experimental fashion and sandwiched in-between is some of Giegling's most eminently danceable output yet from Vril and Prince Of Denmark.

Review: After several releases on his own Kann imprint, Leipzig hero Map.Ache now strikes out on the always reliable Giegling for The Golden Age EP. The title track is a soulful techno workout whose bittersweet synth lead and sombre chords could match the talents of the Motor City's finest. "Give Peace A Change" is an eerie and cinematic sounding cut with a minimal breakbeat, pounding toms and and an immersive and hypnotic synth melody. On the flip "Message To Myself" is another bare bones arrangement revolving around a dense tom drum and and a woozy synth lead but generates so much emotion in its simplicity. "Preyok" is another slice of deep and emotive house with alien synth lines, melancholic pads and layers of tripped out vocal samples all merging together in a weird but beautiful way.

Review: Map.ache's second album on Giegling sneaks out later in the year, but not too late to make some the best of 2020 lists, we hope. Once again, Jan Barich draws you deep into his mystic world of cloudy dub, grainy ambient and lo-fi textures, house grooves, jazz motifs and downtempo bliss, all cleverly interspersed with found sound recordings of every day life, gorgeous organic instrumentals and plenty more. That lends the album a storytelling quality that means each tune plays out like a scene in a film. Some sink you deep into the sofa, some take you to a bustling market, some to a park on a warm summer's day.

She starts in confident mood via the low-slung, jazz-flecked grooves, toasty bass and bluesy vocal samples of "Fire", before reaching for a more tropical sound palette on the feverish late night delights of "Where It Never Ends". Over on side B, "Calypso" expertly combines skewed machine drums, deep house pads and late night electro vibes, while attractive and ear-pleasing closing cut "Si Seulement" delivers a flowery, Balearic-minded deep house flourish to bring down the curtain on Ginestet's strongest EP to date.

Review: Cult label hosting a very well established, if often under-the-radar proponent of the heads down, party-starting but intelligent side of house and techno. Doesn't sound like the worst combination in the world, in many ways Habe ich Gewonnen? is indicative of Maayan Nidam's studio progression, an artist who has long toyed with sounds similar to this EP while building a strong back catalogue on more 'straight up' imprints such as Perlon and Cadenza. Across four tunes things are resolutely non-conformist but instantly engaging and accessible. The loose, jazz-hued broken joy of 'Ice Bear', the jerky, off-kilter minimal lunge of 'In Reverence', pared back percussive wobble on the title track, and the post-punk styled 'Le Petit Mort' are all exceptional pieces, packed with musicality and ideas that go well beyond where many dancefloors stop.

Review: Given that Olin's From Iceland 12" was notable for its' dusty, atmospheric vibe and gentle positivity, it makes perfect sense that Giegling have asked Huerco S to provide remixes. The New York-based artist's work can sometimes be impressively challenging and off-kilter, but it's rarely less than impressively atmospheric. The two versions he rolls out here are predictably crackly and lo-fi, melding delay-laden percussion hits and short piano motifs with the kind of rolling, dub-inspired groove that you'd expect to hail from Bristol, rather than Brooklyn. There are subtle differences between each of the unnamed reworks, but for the most part they're similarly hypnotic, dubbed-out and inspired.

Review: Smart Bar resident Jason 'Olin' Garden steps up for the first release on Giegling's edit-focused sub label G-g---g. Interestingly, "From Iceland" is something of a spring-time treat, with the title track delivering a flowery blend of music box melodies, soft-touch house grooves, looped jazz bass and, most prominently, what sound like guitar samples from Steve Reich and Pat Metheny's "Electric Counterpoint". Flipside "People Fix" is a little more cinematic in tone, with Garden taking a Stylistics classic as his base to fuse a clavinet-driven deep house groove with the marimba stabs and stirring, stretched-out strings. Both cuts are superb, and arguably rank amongst the producer's strongest works to date.

Review: General purveyor of exciting electronic music, Matthias Reiling, is treated here to some excellent remixes on the Giegling imprint. Tornado Wallace's remix of "Apology Girl" is deep, soulful and slow, with every aspect of the track given room to breathe and mature. The Melbournite grants the listener more time to appreciate the subtle nuances and gentle flecks of sound that run up and down within the rhythm. Reiling's Session Victim buddy Hauke Freer teams up with Jamie Lloyd to remix "Grin & Bear It", building a track based on overwhelming noise. Digital synths and organic drum sounds crash all around, while the scant rhythm struggles to break through the wall of sound. Highly recommended.

Review: Session Victim member Matthias Reiling has often impressed with his solo work, previously delivering two albums that join the dots between dusty, sample-heavy beat making, twinkling downtempo grooves and sinewy deep house. His latest record for cult German label Giegling continues in a similar vein, impressively cutting up blazed, jazz-flecked samples, head-nodding MPC beats, and just the right amount of leftfield deep house rhythms. It's largely impressive stuff, with atmospheric pianos, rubbery double bass and eyes-shut guitars nestling side by side with beats that various throb, swing and pop. Happily, highlights come thick and fast, from the enveloping deep house joy of "Outpace", to the trip-hop-with-a-twist smokiness of "On A Pale Horse" and off-kilter jazz-house swing of "Silverhope Road".

I Found Truth In A Soft Night Of Confusion But I Lost It
Ambient 006
Review: Mothercave represents the third album length project from the Weimar based Giegling label and finds the mysterious Prince of Denmark turn to his alias Traumprinz. It's a fitting end to 2013 for Giegling as the label have come out of the woodwork this year to earn some much warranted recognition purely off the back of their press releases-less and artisan-packaged productions. Much love has no doubt again be poured into Mothercave, it's presented on double vinyl and housed in some understated sleeve art that further hints at the meaning of the title. Many of the gloaming textures heard throughout Prince Of Denmark's music appear in Mothercave, specifically "Kiefermuskelkater", which could almost be tagged as a Traumprinz edit of "(In The End) The Ghost Ran Out Of Memory," while other styles flitter the LP including the garage beats of "There Will Be Xtc" to the album's nostalgic closer "Ambient 006?. Like other Giegling releases don't ponder as this won't be in stock for long!

Messed Up Jam
All The Things
I Gave My Life
Let It Go
Review: The man otherwise known as Prince of Denmark takes a break from releasing largely unheralded 12" singles on his own Traumprinz imprint to deliver an excellent four-tracker for Giegling. It's a typically intoxicating affair, with gentle deep house textures and becalmed musical touches offering a neat contrast to his shuffling, techno-tempo percussion. Picking a stand-out is hard given the quality on show, though for us it's a toss-up between the exotic spookiness of "I Gave My Life", the Mr Fingers-does-the-blues smokiness of "All The Things", and brilliant ambient closer "Let It Go". That said, lo-fi techno opener "Messed Up Jam" is sublime, too.

Review: In typical fashion, Giegling has remained tight lipped about this surprise compilation, which has been put together to mark their 20th release. It's an expansive and - as you'd expect - action-packed affair, featuring a range of fine tracks from label regulars and occasional guests. These include Smallville artist Jacques Bon, whose gently acid-soaked "See & Feel" is a drifting, soft focus delight. Amongst the multitude of highlights you'll find the wonky, melancholic, spaced-out techno of Ateq's "Lines", the heady ambience of Pom Pom and Birds & Tapes, the crystalline soundscapes of DJ Metatron, the on-point club-ready antics of Kettenkarussell and Edward, and the sparkling deep house beauty of D-IX's "Scope".
