Words (dub)
Review: Grimy keeps the heat on with a limited seven-inch from Windy City legend Boogie Nite. "Words" sounds like a forgotten classic from the legendary early 80s NYC downtown scene. The smooth disco arrangement and punk-funk vocals could have emanated from a dream session between Walter Gibbons and Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Feel-good Rhodes piano lays the melodic foundation as a gang of female voices ruminate on the rhythmic meaning of words. All the while, a shit-hot disco rhythm section keeps things in the pocket. This is a track that will light dancefloors up and have fellow djs flooding the booth for an ID. Expert Funk dub version on the B-Side. white/black swirl vinyl with custom Grimy graffiti logo.

Dejay Cease - "The Fixer"
Boogienite - "Boy Ok"
Review: If you're going to beat 'em down, you need the right tools. On the label's second release, Grimy Trax has given you a couple hammers.
The A-side, DeJay Cease's 'The Fixer' is straight Chicago. We're talking banging 909 funk that might be found buried on a particularly unhinged Ron Hardy mix. A simple bass line and two notes of acid are all it takes to make the floor go wild. This is functional heat with enough atmosphere to engage the mind, body and soul.
On the B-side, rising Chicago son Boogienite proves he's earned the hype. 'Boy, OK' is an instant classic thanks to some recognizable disco strings and a funky escalator of a bassline. The producer uses a trippy, rubberband synth which eventually turns into rhythmic, teasing vocal. The mixdown is ridiculous, especially as the lengthy track passes the halfway mark. Boogie brings the bassline in and out in between beautiful ambient rhodes and a call and response male and female vocal. Those strings hit again and you feel no pain.

Tim McAllister - "Rollin'"
Cratebug - "Get Up Move Your Body"
Rahaan - "Buari Traxx"
Review: It's a family affair as Grimy returns with heat from the windy city known for amazing dance edits. Tim McAllister takes it out the gate with "Rollin'", a classic soul/disco beater replete with joyous flute trills, Leslie speaker efx and a pumping house kick. In-demand newcomer Cratebug's "Get Up Move Your Body" is a spacious, cosmic edit of a little-remembered Canadian gem. The song ends with an intuitive synth jam that will be enjoyed by DJs and home listeners alike. Longtime Grimy associate Rahaan ends things with a bang. His largely original "Buari Traxx" mixes Ghanaian rhythms with killer disco bass and the nuanced, tracky drum programming you could find on a DanceMania record. The brilliant track is built for the floor and also serves as an apt transition into Grimy Trax, a sister label that will release all new music. Chicago's still burning.

Rahaan - "Rebound"
Zernell & Rahaan - "What!"
Tim McAllister - "I Need Help!"
Review: The highly anticipated release of Grimy Edits Vol. 6 is here with the type of monster edits you'd expect from GRIMY! On this sixth volume of the popular edit series you have Veteran Chicago DJs Zernell & Rahaan bringing the heat with Rahaan's supercharged version of Rebound as the 1st track, coupled with the Zernell - Rahaan collaboration of an obscure B-side Latin Disco / Break Beat Jam perfectly titled WHAT! Joined on the flip side of the release is veteran edit master Tim McAllister of M.I.L.C. Music fame who takes a lesser known JB 7" and transforms it into the dance foor killer titled "I Need Help!".

The Twilite Tone - "KHANDoit"
Bruce Ivery - "LULU"
Review: KHANDoit's hypnotic 100 BPM stomp does not adhere to genre or fickle trends, it simply bangs. The track begins with a sturdy kick and piano glissandos which recall Alice Coltrane's most transportative work. As the beat picks up, a creeping, filtered arpeggio enters its journey between rhythmic and downright nasty serving as the track's primary drama. Its a stunning intro to the new label GRIMY TRAX, a musical chameleon that can be dropped at the beginning, middle or end of the night. To complement the epic A-side, Grimy returns to the endlessly talented midwest and emerges with LULU, an original track by deejay/edit ace Bruce Ivery. The track seamlessly combines the Chicago acid sound with the clever vocal sampling of early 90s NYC house. The result is pure peak-time heat. Towards the end of the track, Ivery arranges brief melodic elements into a propulsive disco facsimile. This unexpected turn summarizes the philosophy of the new label and the way this small group of artists selects and makes records. It doesn't matter if it's house, disco, or techno, just make it GRIMY!

New Group In Town
Keep Holdin On
Disconnect
Review: Chicago duo Zernell and Goodking deliver only the third round of grimy edits in two years, but it's clear they are all about the quality not the quantity. If Ron Hardy (RIP) was still pumping out the 8 hour sets at The Music Box, he might partake in "New Group In Town" which hogs the A Side here. Embellished with an abundance of energy, this proto vocal disco funker is driven by raw sleazy percussion and a breakdown punctuated by a monumental guitar riff. This is complemented by the Philly disco delight of "Keep Holdin On", which comes daubed in a hazy ethereal quality, and the taut moog heavy bomb that is "Dis-Connect".

Big Time
Strivin'
Get Down
Review: The mysterious Chicago label Grimy Edits serves up a fourth portion of lesser spotted disco dance material from the cutting labs of Goodking and Zernell - with the results just as incendiary as previous editions. "Big Time" hogs the A Side on a funk disco tip, all tightly wound guitar riffs and heavy organ vibes atop the funkiest of grooves - there's a rough sensation that runs throughout and a killer drop and build towards the last third. On the flip "Strivin" shows off the duo's chopping skills, dicing and looping the intro before unfurling into a Philly cheese disco main section whilst "Get Down" is a taut percussive block party jam filled with electric organ glee.
