Review: Guesthouse Music is ecstatic to welcome the ultra-talented, chart-topping Joey Youngman back to the realm of classic house music with two officel remixese of Bobby D'Ambrosio's So Thankful, And Elevate Me. These stunning remixs, Youngman's first house productions in more than a decade, demonstrates with absolute clarity Youngman's roots in and love of the house music genre. Review: Bay-Area native Jason Sutton aka DJ Mes should require no introduction. One of the champions of the west coast house sound, he's run the Oakland-based label Guesthouse Music since 1994 which has released a prolific catalog of bass-heavy tracks that have scorched dancefloors over the years. For his imprint's 52nd release, he serves up four surefire tracks on the Doin' W3rk EP, which features 'Amour Est Libre' with its the funky disco loops, and the dubby and hypnotic shuffle of 'Good Love' which is a proper throwback to that early noughties sound he helped popularise alongside the like of Chris Lum, Jay-J and Hipp-E & Halo.

Funky/Club House
Soul Glow (6:23)
Party People (6:57)
Homage (7:04)
Review: Producer and DJ MES (aka Jason Sutton) is the man behind the Guesthouse label out of California and has overseen it serving up more than 100 releases. His own music is never far away from influential charts and record bags and now he serves up a funky number packed with soul samples. 'Soul Glow' kicks off with playful drum loops and filters, a neat bassline and infectious claps. 'Party People' has a more edgy feel with silvery drums and tumbling congas while 'Homage' is the most raw and direct and possibly the best of the lot with its chunky drums and razor-sharp hi-hats.

Two Nights In Oakland EP

Funky/Club House
Freaks On The Floor
Flyin
The Revolution (original)
The Recolution (vox)
Review: Having spent One Night in Oakland courtesy of Guesthouse Music last year, the inimitable Sonny Fodera teams up with San Fran's DJ Mes for this fiendishly titled follow up Two Nights in Oakland! Fans of either producer will know what to expect here, contemporary jackin house with bass lines dipped in urgency and plenty of filtered vocal hooks, with "Freaks on the Floor" laying down the gauntlet. Alongside it "Flyin" offers tightly wound rhythms and a dicier approach to vocal sample implementation, ramping up the inevitable release of pressure when the piano hook comes sailing in. On the flip the duo present two variants on "The Revolution" both of which lift Mos Def's take on the Gil Scott classic and slip it beneath the bounciest of beats, with the original perhaps the best.

Super Secret Squirrel Trax Vol 3
Cat: GM 46. Rel: 22 Jan 18

Funky/Club House
Mark Funk & Danny Cruz - "Givin' My Love"
Peter Brown - "Funkosphere"
DJ Mes - "State Of Affairs"
Hazzaro - "Saturday"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: You just can't beat those Super Secret Squirrel Trax releases on Guesthouse, one of the most sizable house labels operating of the Bay Area. On this third installment, Mark Funk and Danny Cruz keep things live and direct with the impassioned soulful house of "Givin' My Love". Peter Brown then slides in with the tracky pressure of "Funkosphere", which comes with added flute for good measure. DJ Mes also strikes a headier groove, but teases the ingredients on "State Of Affairs" out into an effervescent peak time floor filler, and then Hazzaro brings it home with the rallying, roller-skate call of "Saturday".

Super Secret Squirrel Trax Vol 4

Funky/Club House
Prince Dred & Bunny Sigler - "Freak Like Me" (DJ Dan mix) (7:06)
DJ Homewrecker - "New World In My View" (Saison remix) (6:06)
DJ Mes - "90s Groove" (6:18)
Rescue - "Here & Now" (6:49)
Review: Of the many threads to the excellent Oakland-based deep house stable Guesthouse, the Super Secret Squirrel Trax series is one of the surefire highlights. Loaded with choice operators locked into some serious West Coast funk, things kick off in fine style with the infectious party starting antics of Prince Dred and Bunny Sigler, who get the remix treatment from DJ Dan on "Freak Like Me". Saison takes a more mainline approach when reworking DJ Homewrecker, while DJ Mes is in heads down mode on the tracky but addictive "90s Groove". Rescue's "Here & Now" serves up a cheeky R&B re-rub for the peak time crowd.
