Review: We were somewhat surprised when we discovered that this is the first album that Rabit's Halcyon Veil label has committed to wax. It comes from Vancouver producer Will Ballantyne under the City pseudonym. Unlike many other electronic music artists in the Canadian city, Ballantyne is not obsessed with sweeping new wave synth sounds and dusty, loved-up deep house. Instead, he delivers a series of inspired sound collages that combine melodious elements (fluttering synthesized flute lines, droning textures, baroque style Harpsichord motifs, sampled acoustic guitars, and so on) with all manner of fuzzy field recordings and wonky, out-of-this world samples. It's rather hard to describe, but makes for wonderful listening.
