The EP With No Name (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MATE 013. Rel: 12 Feb 18
Deep House
  1. Bunny Hoppin (4:19)
  2. Flush (6:55)
  3. The Truth (5:26)
  4. Tipsy (3:14)
Review: Chicago Damn is the latest esteemed producer to shore up at Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label, following the Hypoleon EP with some forthright, sample heavy funk house concoctions that nod to his other work on Wolf Music and the like. "Bunny Hoppin" is a rowdy but soulful belter with a peppy tempo and an addictive line in looped up samples, while "Flush" takes things slower and dustier without getting too lost in the undergrowth. "The Truth" lays its samples out in bold, bright brushstrokes with a pattering, psyched out undercurrent for deeper, sunkissed moments, and then "Tipsy" finishes the EP off in a playful tryst of re-pitched piano trills and scuffed beats.

  9. There Must Be A God (1:54)
  10. Wide Whistles (3:10)
Review: Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label turns to an unknown entity for their next release, giving Dear Earth no less than a full album to run with as a first outing. That's a strong statement of conviction, and the label are right to be so bold as Dear Earth shows off the kind of inventive, sample-rich approach that makes your ears prick up in an instant. Supposedly hailing from London, this mysterious figure has been trawling through all kinds of ephemera and stewing it into a soulful, meandering body of work that touches on house, downtempo broken beat and more besides.

Hypoleon EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MATE 014. Rel: 08 Jan 18
Deep House
  1. Tresberry
  2. Norman
  3. Hostel
  4. Tresberry (Jon McMillion remix)
  5. Tresberry (Tevo Howards Acid remix)
Review: Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label welcomes a newcomer to the fold, with Hypoleon displaying a warm and inviting take on outboard, leftfield, electronic soul with a wavey edge to it. The vocals on the original tracks have a haunting edge to them thanks to some hefty processing, but the power in the delivery is undeniable. The tracks meanwhile channel acid, electro and minimal wave in understated ways, played out with a live band dynamic that hooks you in from the start. Jon McMillion's remix of "Tresberry" turns the track into a simmering 4/4 jam for the warm up heads to get loose to, while Tevo Howard brings some of his signature boxy acid to bear down on the track.

Kick Drunk Love (140 gram vinyl 12")

Deep House
  1. Sidewalks
  2. Where's Ralf?
  3. No Grace
  4. Pigmy
  5. Stage Left
  6. Leaving
Review: Dave Aju, Alland Byallo, Kenneth Scott and Marc Smith joined together as KAMM, resulting in a mini-album called Kick Drunk Love for marcel Vogel's Amsterdam based label Intimate Friends.iDescribed in a press release as being influenced by the artists' "love of early '90s MoWax era laid-back beats," it features Barrite on lead vocals (with Byallo and Scott also contributing vocals), Smith on guitar, Byallo on trumpet and Scott on Moog synth. There's a couple guest appearances as well: Damian Schwartz plays some bass on "Sidewalks" and Eureka provides "a hell of a [vacuum] rev" on "Stage Left."

Review: Bobby Van Putten's The Planty Herbs project has been reveling in the edit world since 2010, although his output is frustratingly scattered for those who appreciate his tender touch. Now though you can revel in the splendour of a full 12-track, double vinyl album that truly shows what Putten is made of. From the mellow soul food of "Nothing Lasts" to the laidback hip hop funk of "Downgrade", the dusty house experiments of "Akustika" to the poppy overtones of "Follow Me Now," this is the sound of an artist with a rich musical gift and a soulful instinct.

Essig Jazz EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MATE 004. Rel: 15 Jun 15
Deep House
  1. Essig Jazz
  2. Essig Jazz (Glenn Astro remix)
  3. Got To Be (feat Caits Meissner)
  4. Slowswing
Review: Vienna in da House! The latest release from Intimate Friends invites Viennese producer par excellence Roman Rauch into the fold for the Essig Jazz EP. Straight from the home of the Wiener schnitzel, Roman is of course known for almost a dozen releases on labels like Endless Flight, Philpot and Quintessentials. The Austrian is on fine fettle here with three twisted and rolling productions; the spoken word delivery from Caits Meissner on "Got To Be" is something of a highlight as is the wonderfully messed up remix of the title track from Glenn Astro.

Goodbye Miss Misanthropy (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MATE 010. Rel: 12 Jun 17
Deep House
  1. Remind Me Of Dancing (feat Jyroscope)
  2. ITB Jam
  3. Love Letter
  4. Last Time
Review: The Marcel Vogel-fronted label Intimate Friends has already done sterling work releasing deep house from the likes of Roman Rauch and Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and now it's Simba's turn to step up and strut his stuff. The Goodbye Miss Misanthropy EP is loaded with curveball house music of the highest order, with "Remind Me Of Dancing" particularly standing out thanks to Jyroscope's inspiring vocal turn. There's some off-kilter jazz moods tumbling out of "ITB Jam", while a fractured soul vibe gives "Love Letter" its power. "Last Time" is a honey-coated closer that rides on the laziest of grooves with some added sample power from a titan of RnB.
