Review: During 2020, when the global pandemic raged and most musicians were restricted to home recording, The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver Justin Vernon decided to rekindle their Big Red Machine project, which last released music three years ago. With the help of a wealth of guest vocalists and musicians - most notably old pal Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes and Anais Mitchell - the pair recorded How Long Do You Think Its Gonna Last, a yearning meditation on loneliness and relationship angst. It's a strong set all told, with the duo and their guests conjuring up memorable, melancholic songs that successfully stitch together elements of Americana, folk, gentle indie-pop, electronica and breezy, radio-friendly AOR.

Review: Listening to the awaited full length of The National's Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon's (Bon Iver) Big Red Machine project and it's hard not to think they've invested themselves in discovering deeper strands of electronic music, or production... if the sporadic drum machine work of "Deep Green" is anything to go by. "I Won't Run From It" however sees the pair back in their full choral beauty, presenting a song for thousands to potentially wave their hands this summer. This Big Red Machine was produced over the past two years involving many-a collaboration from New York and its artistic community, with the band themself saying: "this feels like something new-the process felt different and the outcome felt different." Check it.

Review: Jag Jaguwar presents Black Mountain's new album 'In The Future'. These favourite psych-&-prog-spiritual pioneers are back with their 2nd full-length that resonates with the same epic ring, beloved deep rock
touchstones and genuine folk fragility that made their debut an instant classic. This possesses immense breadth, seamlessly showcasing short and classic folk-pop gems along with driving modern rock masterpieces.

Review: When it comes to plugging in mega stacks of amplified prog-rock, Vancouver-area band Black Mountain deliver a retro-futuristic sound that's as large as any Godzilla soundtrack. With Destroyer presenting a fifth LP on Bloomington label Jagjaguwar, Black Mountain go someway in delivering a bold cross reference of only the best and most legendary points of 60s, 70s and 90s rock n roll regalia. With keys and piano mixed with guitars, distortion and vocoders giving the band a futuristic, krautrock (Deutsche elektronik musik) edge, British psychedelic and raw but atmospheric arrangements give the band their own undeniable identity. With songs passing the bottle from slow dancing rock, flashy hair metal, to synthy guitars and cosmic arpeggios, the best metal of today is still way up there, on Black Mountain.

Review: Justin Vernon's voice has always been the people's main attraction to Bon Iver, and the fact his pseudonym even exists is certainly no coincidence. As fragile and heartbroken as it is forthright and experienced, when you're wearing a shredded heart on sleeve and confessing to all your deepest insecurities using a pen name can help immensely. Album number four perhaps proves this more than any of its predecessors. While the three previous chapters have all made his thoughts, feelings, insecurities and fears clear, this one takes honesty to new heights. Combining the frail electronics that have gradually slipped their way into his back catalogue with the acoustics of his earliest, rocket-to-fame efforts, it's a culmination of all that's been in the truest sense. Perhaps even more intimate than the breathtakingly personal "For Emma, Forever Ago", "i,i" is a striking work to say the least.

Review: The evolution of Justin Vernon from the broken-hearted, falsetto-voiced troubadour who emerged from his cabin to deliver his debut eight years ago to the here and now may seem downright implausible, yet the facts of the matter are this - '22, A Million' is proof positive that he is one of the most multi-faceted and enigmatic and inscrutable artists we have at our disposal, still capable of delivering heart-rending beauty in song form yet also of marrying it to wilful abstraction in a way that not only offers emotional resonance yet reflects and refracts its surrounding era to offer succour and salvation. Sing it from the rooftops, this is little short of a complicated modern masterpiece.

Review: Bullion is a virtuoso pop producer who brings a different perspective. His 80s tinged poptimism has won him a hardcore fan base. He draws on dusky yacht pop, synth pop, blue eyed soul and fantasy sounds for his inspiration and distils them all into his own unique outlook. Here he makes a classy debut for US indie label Jagjaguwar and sets sail on the lullaby like 'Heaven Is Over. 'Strike A Light' brims with more lush melodies and retro-future sounds with his own vocals drifting up top. A real standout is the closer, 'Loving Furlong,' which is intimate and sincere and shows his songwriting at its best.

Review: Your Day Will Come is the debut album from Chanel Beads (Shane Lavers), a fresh face and breakout force in the realm of contemporary, dreamy avant-garde music. The New York musician's first LP here follows up 2022 singles 'Ef' and 'True Altruism', and hears him fleshing out his distinctly catatonic and silken sound, achieved by his patented method of layering acoustic and synthetic instruments. A veritable traversal of the fantasy in sound, the album was born of Lavers' experience of lockdown in 2020, during which time the musician found himself reexamining his relationship to music and artistry, in a bid to find his authenticity. A recollection of an early childhood experience of loss followed, an experience which informs on the album's psychic-stylistic meanderings, which span every facet of electronic to punk to dream pop to pysch-funk to neoclassical folk.

Review: Cleveland-born, Brooklyn-based songwriter Max Clarke is the man behind the Cut Worms alias. This is his third album and first no three years. Next to his own bandmates John Andrews on keys, Keven Louis Lareau on bass, and Noah Bond on drums, he has enlisted guests Brian & Michael D?Addorio of The Lemon Twigs and Rick Spataro of Florist and aimed to pare down his songs and say only what he thought was most essential, asking himself in the process "How much can I say and give in a limited amount of time?" The answer is a lot with the likes of the murder ballad 'Ballad of the Texas King' a real highlight.

Review: Of all the reformations of classic '90s band to take place in the last decade and a half, Dinosaur Jr's - now nine years in - has been one of the most uplifting. Moreover, this has been largely down to this decidedly scruffy and unassuming outfit delivering nothing more nor less than the same old fabulous thing, with no drama or no rock star frolics, yet bucketloads of the raw magic, chemistry and style that always elevated their records far above the grunge-rock hurly-burly. 'Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not' has it all - memorable songs, wildly in-the-red production, a tight and electrifying band and J Mascis cementing his status as the greatest guitarist of a generation.

Review: Some 36 years after making an instant impact with their fuzzy debut album, alt rock originals Dinosaur Jr. are still going strong. Sweep It Into Space, the band's first studio album since 2016, is testament to their continued mastery of an art form that they helped to define and refine. All the usual staples of their sound are present and correct - think punchy, tom-heavy drums, alternately scuzzy and attractive guitars and J Masics' instantly identifiable vocals - alongside a seemingly new-found love of indie-pop melancholy and wistful musical arrangements (the latter almost certainly influenced by producer Kurt Vile). In other words, it's a grown-up Dinosaur Jr. album that ticks all of the right boxes.

Review: Indie and alternative rock have changed a lot since the mighty Jr. first hit us with grizzly riffs and Gen X tones. Nevertheless, this is a band that helped change the face of the Western guitar scene back in the late-1980s, and their influence and impact is still felt today. The whole reason the sound of this three piece is so familiar is it helped pave the way for much that has come since.

Sweep It Into Space might be the best reminder of that. Originally pegged for release last year, with Kurt Vile involved, sadly he fell ill and was unable to offer his talent, leaving the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup to do their thing. And do their thing they did. It's lo-fi but powerful, romantic but broken, high-energy but cool, gritty rock music for streets, skateparks and late-night bars and bonfires, and we never want it to end.

Review: This Californian duo have attracted more than their fair share of opprobrium over their four albums to date, and this doesn't seem likely to abate with 'Hang', their boldest and most audacious effort to date. Whereas in the past their psychedelic and glam fixations have coloured their output, here they take a bold leap into showtune fervour with a theatrically extravagant selection of orchestrally embellished ditties that are as beholden to Todd Rundgren as Sondheim, and "Bugsy Malone" as Sufjan Stevens. Moreover, give that precious few other bands could come anywhere near pulling off the feat that these two manage with 'Hang', it's just worth considering that the naysayers are jealous of both Foxygen's talent and their formidable chutzpah.

I Am Very Far: The Lyrics
Cat: 430751 Rel: 21 Jul 11

Hard bound lyric book containing the full scope of Sheff's vision for Okkervil River's album I Am Very Far (36 pages, hardback, black & white)
Notes: Will Sheff of Okkervil River has long been recognized for his writing: a contributor to McSweeney's, Sheff was nominated for a Grammy for his liner notes for Roky Erickson's 2010 album True Love Cast Out All Evil, The New York Times declared that, Sheff writes like a novelist.

The I Am Very Far: The Lyrics is a hard bound lyric book containing the full scope of Sheff's vision for his latest and most refined album to date, Okkervil River's I Am Very Far. The I Am Very Far: The Lyrics is meant to function as a distinct entrance point into the content of the music. More than a complement to the albums themselves, Sheff's prose weaves tales both subtle and dynamic and enriches the content of his songs. Including the lyrics for Mermaid and other songs recorded during the I Am Very Far sessions, the book is a complete work in its own right.

Limited to only 50 copies for the UK and Eire.

Review: Romance with a capital 'R', as they say, ivory key doyen Gia Margaret returns with another spectacular and spellbinding collection of beautiful movements and pieces that sees her invoke a sense of peace, tranquility and solitude. Reflective arrangements that seem to straddle both a sense of loss, or at least melancholia, and acceptance and comfort in oneself. "I wanted to make music that was useful," Margaret says of the record. "Romantic Piano is curious, calming, patient and incredibly moving - but it doesn't overstay its welcome for more than a second." Running between fairytale like 'Sitting On The Piano' to the opiate, neo-pop of 'City Song', its a rare beast that can simultaneously feel tripped out and surreal, but also grounded in the world we are so luck to experience.

Review: Going fast, slowly, could describe Nap Eyes. The Nova Scotian troupe are geographically removed from the ferocious and insatiable global music hubs, and therefore the idea of them refusing to stay still but also rejecting anything like the pace of big city scenes seems to make perfect sense. You can almost picture the log cabin they work in, and the shadows dancing off beams by way of gas lamps as they plot their own unique course. In reality, that's probably not how it happens, but the band fronted by Nigel Chapman doesn't adhere to normal rules. In the past they have called upon icy forms of psych and rougher adventures in alternative rock. Their tracks are often epic in length, running up to 20-minutes, but their own view on this is that they could actually be far longer. 'Snapshot Of A Beginner' is both familiar and new - the guitars are here again, but sound wiser and, quieter and more patient.

Review: "Lark", "Summer" and "Chance" from this release will be familiar to fans of Angel Olsen. They are slightly reworked and sometimes re-titled pieces from 'All Mirrors', her huge 2019 oeuvre that got high praise and plenty of glossy magazine coverage. They all serve, next to the other tracks, as reminders that songs can be more than just words, but complex webs of moods and emotions that add up to more than the sum of their parts. Here Olsen is frank and unflinching on subjects like love, loss and survival. It's a troubled but rewarding listen.

Review: If you felt Angel Olsen's 'All Mirrors' album would benefit from a stripped down, pared back interpretation this is your lucky day. Far from some rushed attempt to release anything into the music industry's COVID-19 infested waters, the intimate, often hushed and delicate versions here are actually the original recordings of the tracks, which were then elevated to the scale we heard on that LP of last year.

The plan was always to release these as a counterpoint to the bigger sounding takes, and there will be few reasonably minded people who won't delight in that decision. It's as if we've watched her sepia-hued show-stopping performance in the main ballroom and then retired for intimate drinks in the dressing room. A staggering sibling to what was already one of our favourite records from recent years.

Review: Last year saw Angel Olsen break through with her highly acclaimed third album 'My Woman'. To follow that success comes 'Phases', a raw and intimate collection of demos, B-sides and rarities recorded over the last seven years. Compared to her previous studio albums, these demos are more stripped back - giving a little more room to showcase Olsen's powerful and broad vocals, which here err more on the side of vulnerability than the grungy confidence to be found on 'My Woman'. Considering this is essentially an album of unused tracks, the sheer quality and weight of these haunting and wry offcuts is nothing if not impressive, and in their chronological arrangement provide a guided tour of Angel Olsen's development so far.

Review: By her usually prolific standards, it's been a long time between albums for Angel Olsen. "All Mirrors" is her first album for three years - an epic gap given that she used to average an LP a year in the early stage of her career. As usual, Olsen has redefined her sound once more, offering up impassioned songs that come backed by bold, wall of sound style production from John Congleton. There are many moments of stirring intensity, where swirling strings, eccentric electronics and low-slung indie-rock grooves join forces to create stunning and arresting musical works of art. The more contemplative moments often sound a little like "Mezzanine"-era Massive Attack or Portishead, though Olsen's voice and Congleton's production are always unique enough to make comparisons with those bands moot.

Review: St Louis' indie icon Angel Olsen has always hinted at her country leanings in her music, but on her sixth album she goes more wholeheartedly into the tradition of Americana. At the same time, the album's themes centre around Olsen's journey of discovery as she came out as queer in her mid-thirties, and this gets explored wholeheartedly in the video for the title track with its testing of gender norms. Co-produced with Jonathan Wilson and featuring Drew Erickson and Emily Elhaj on keys and bass respectively, it's a stunning step on for Olsen as she explores the roots of her sound and her world as it stands now.

Review: Recorded at Vox Studios, Los Angeles, Angel Olsen's third album is a game of two halves, a city of contrasts, and a juxtaposition of emotions, realised through music. Structurally, it plays out with a pair of distinct sides, with the A serving to represent upbeat positivity, the kind of tracks you want playing as you cruise through town on a blue sky-thinking day. Flip it to find things are much more sedate, reflective, and thoughtful, albeit definitely far from sombre.

That certainly helps pack variety into the release. My Woman followed on from Burn Your Fire for No Witness and Half Way Home, both of which had been resolutely lo-fi indie. By comparison, this was her attempt to break free of those delicate, self-created shackles and deliver something fuller, louder, and much poppier. She achieved just that, and if you're not already familiar we recommend listening to the stunning results.

Review: Angel Olsen's Aisles is an 80s cover EP that has been put together after her last two emotionally wrought albums. It has some great moments like the brooding sounds of her versions of classics such as 'Forever Young' and 'The Safety Dance.' The artist says she heard the source material while in grocery stores and was inspired to just "have a little fun and be a little more spontaneous." Laura Branigan's Euro-disco anthem 'Gloria' is another standout as here it becomes a moody rework with slow tempos that draw you in deep, while there is a real tenderness to her take on Alphaville's 'Forever Young.'

Review: Long destined for greatness, if whatever god you do or don't believe in doesn't bestow upon Moses Sumney's household name longevity then it's simply because he refuses to play by the rules of the music system. Experimental in the true sense - he loves to see what can be done with what we are already used to - in a world that's well accustomed to soul-jazz-electronica-R&B hybrids Sumney still stands out as one of the few capable of real magic. Opening on 'Cut Me', not discounting the wonderful tune up intro just before, it's hard to remember more of an effective display of pop perfection and heartfelt songwriting in a leftfield artist since Jamie Lidell delivered 'Multiply'. 'Grae' is a very different beast made for a very different and more complex time, though, embracing a swathe of elements from icy darkwave to acoustic balladry and even opera as it runs its course. Phenomenal.

Review: Unsurprisingly, Aromanticism - meaning to have little or no romantic attraction to others - is exactly the idea Moses Sumney explores on this stunning debut. Having written the majority of this album's lyrics in the solitude of remote north American cabins, Sumney's songs about loneliness and distance feel natural and sincere. Throughout 'Aromanticism' Sumney shows off his affinity with vocal acrobatics, leaping from his rasping lower register to achingly dulcet falsetto. Both in his instrumentation and as a vocalist, Sumney strikes a pitch-perfect balance between acoustic and digital, exhibiting his ability to blend the two. Sumney blends passages of spoken word, neo-soul, broken-beat, and the vocal harmonies and movements, cascading with gospel precision, that shone on his 2016 EP. 'Aromanticism' is a powerful and heartfelt opening statement from an artist well worth keeping an eye on in the future.

Unsurprisingly, Aromanticism - meaning to have little or no romantic attraction to others - is exactly the idea Moses Sumney explores on this stunning debut. Sumney blends passages of spoken word, neo-soul, broken-beat, and the vocal harmonies and movements, cascading with gospel precision, that shone on his 2016 EP 'Lamentations'. 'Aromanticism' is a powerful and heartfelt opening statement from an artist well worth keeping an eye on in the future.

Review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra deliver a second album for 2018 and this instrumental missive as the title suggests, was recorded in Hanoi, Vietnam, with the help of local musician and percussion aide Minh Nguyen, who added some traditional instrumentalism and flair to the album's seven tracks. It follows this year's Sex & Food LP, with the New Zealand psych rock group taking this extension of the LP that extra-step by adding a class of exotica to their radical sound. From grungy Dirty Beaches-like tracks to fourth world experimentalism in the vein of Jon Hassell, there's a profound world of sound to be further discovered here.
