Review: Closely affiliated with Nina Kraviz's trip label, Icelandic maverick Bjarki has managed to carve out a unique identity for himself in the hustle and bustle of contemporary electronic music. Following three full-length releases back in 2016, he now appears on !K7 with a new album that shows off the depth and breadth of his idiosyncratic vision. From curious ambient excursions peppered with rich sound design to spooked out boogie and deconstructed techno, sometimes within the same track, Bjarki has ably cemented his reputation as one of the scene's most intriguing operatives. Just take a trip on the fractured breaks and looming pads of "AN6912" and marvel at the originality.

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, "Psychotic Window" is Bjarki's second full-length outing of 2019 - though eagle-eyed readers may note that it was previously available as a "secret bonus album" within the highly limited edition boxed version of its predecessor, "Happy Birthday". It's therefore unsurprising that it explores similarly sonic territory, with the Icelandic artist flitting between glacial ambient, moody, Biosphere style IDM, dubbed-out doom-scapes, post trip-hop breakbeat fuzziness, unsettling electronica, Autechre-esque beat tracks and stripped-back, sub-heavy techno. While stylistically varied, it's uniformly moody and atmospheric, with a creeping sense of paranoia and despair that pervades even the most melodic of tracks.

Review: Having found a renewed vigour with his Breach alias, Ben Westbeech has been ripping it up with his run of singles over the past few years, and now !K7 have snapped him up for the latest installment in the still-trucking DJ Kicks series that shows just how deeply rooted in house music the long-serving producer is. With the double-pack vinyl edition packing in full versions of many of the standout tracks from the mix, you can get treated to the anthemic vocal tones of Pedestrian, the heartfelt garage tones of Cassio Kohl, the fist shaking grooves of Detroit Swindle and in something of a curveball move, the ethereal electro of Dopplereffekt. For the most part it's direct and soulful house music as you would expect from a man of Ben's pedigree.

Review: Dam Funk has been foundational in crystallising Stones Throw's undisputed leadership in the nu-school funk and boogie scene, and he's up there with the great J Dilla in our books. Naturally, he's been asked to mix up the latest series of DJ Kicks and, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real masterclass - one of those comps you can safely leave on and let it do its thing on you. The mood is personified by a fine blend of electronics and tougher, funkier rhythms by artists such as Index, Moon B, and Dam himself. There are also a few rare cuts by Chicago house legend Gemini that fit in perfectly, and a whole heap of wavy, Cali-inspired electronic funk. Badass.

Review: It would be fair to say that Deetron has taken the opportunity provided by a DJ Kicks mix to show off a little. We'll forgive him, though, because he's delivered an astonishingly good mix. Cramming an astonishing 38 tracks on to one CD might look like overkill, but the selection, programming and mixing (presumably in the studio, given the number of overdubs and sneaky track blends involved) is so good that you barely notice. Musically, he delivers a brilliant blend of electronic music old and new, moving from deep house and jazzy electronica to ambient via slamming rave jams and almost every techno sub-genre you can think of. We'd usually spend time banging on about highlights, but they're so plentiful that there simply isn't space. Just buy it: you won't be disappointed.

  12. Marcel Dettmann - "Let’s Do It" (Rolando remix) (8:02)
Review: Berlin techno legend Marcel Dettmann is up next for !k7, compiling their latest edition of the esteemed DJ Kicks series. The Berghain resident merges new takes on classics; such as Cybersonik's "Technarchy" (Marcel Dettmann Third mix) and his remix of Infiniti's (aka Juan Atkins) "Skyway" alongside Mystic Bill's classic "U Won't C Me". Elsewhere, he dabbles in classic electro territory from Das Kombinat on "Waschmaschine", industrial proto-techno on Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia's "War Chant" (Marcel Dettmann edit) and some new exclusives from MDR HQ in the form of some interesting collaborations. There's some stripped and textured dub techno featuring Levon Vincent on "Can You See" and a jagged industrial experiment with fellow label mate Wincent Kunth on "Possible Step". While the mix is definitely reminiscent of one of his renowned 12 - 4 warm up sets, the vinyl edition (which comes as a bonus with this double vinyl release in gatefold cover) is a fine collection timeless techno and future classics.

Review: Eccentric Swedish sitcom enthusiast turned producer DJ Seinfeld is hot property right now, so it's hardly a surprise to see him mixing the latest instalment in the DJ Kicks series. It's rather good, all told, offering a good run through of his influences and inspirations whilst also packing plenty of dancefloor punch. Taken in isolation, the Swede's on-point selections (think breakbeat-driven lo-fi house, dreamy deep house, skewed techno and bubbly post-IDM jams) are often deep, melodious, atmospheric and left-of-centre; brought together, the result is a wonderfully fluid and entertaining mix. Highlights include the downtempo bliss of the producer's own "I See U", the bass-heavy breaks/deep house fusion of Rudolf C's "Deep Sea Survivor", the rushing dancefloor mania of FaltyDL and the loved-up goodness of Project Pablo.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an unlikely collaboration between celebrated Italian producer DJ Tennis and Fink, one of the longest-serving members of the extended Ninja Tune family. The latter's melancholic, heartfelt vocals are a perfect foil for Tennis's gentle and melodious backing track, which layers bubbling electronics, simmering orchestration and twinkling synthesizer motifs atop a sparse, undulating drum machine groove. If we had to tightly define it, we'd call it lilting outsider pop. On the flip you'll find the "Club Mix", which wraps Fink's vocal and cascading pianos around a tactile, soft touch house groove.

Review: Since mood, atmosphere, emotion and a left-of-centre approach have always been the hallmarks of Forest Swords' own productions, you'd expect to find a similar emphasis on this DJ Kicks excursion. Predictably, he's done just that, conjuring up a heady, constantly surprisingly musical journey that somehow manages to draw together many different stylistic elements whilst still making perfect sonic sense. There's not enough room to go into all of the eyebrow-raising twists and turns, but expect a mix of field recordings, neo classical, 1970s electronic experiments, the dub-wise reggae of Rhythm & Sound, out-there jazz-funk, Cameroonian water rhythms (really), haunting Bulgarian choirs, post-punk pop fuzziness, contemporary leftfield techno, pastoral folk songs and a dash of mid-'90s Orbital.

It's a contribution to one of the longest running series in the business, DJ Kicks, and she's used the opportunity to showcase the depth and variety of the music in her crates. Beginning with the classic early '90s ambient of Spacetime Continuum, Gou flits between humid, mid-tempo Balearic house (her own "Hungboo"), acid-fired downtempo electronica (Pearson Sound), throbbing 1990 peak-time anthems (Weatherall's ace but largely forgotten remix of Sly & Lovechild), hypnotic techno minimalism (Dorisburg), main room throb-jobs (Hiver), pulsating electro (DMX Krew), classic breakbeat hardcore (Shades of Rhythm), post-dubstep (Kode 9), dark tribal drum jams (Black Merlin) and sunrise ready Motor City brilliance (Deniro).

Review: Although she's offered up plenty of high-grade DJ mixes in the past, this volume in the "DJ Kicks" series marks Laurel Halo's first commercially available mix-up. The sometime Hyperdub producer has dutifully delivered something rather special, somehow joining the dots between 29 diverse and disparate cuts in the manner of a true turntable maestro. Beginning with the melodious experimentalism of her own "Public Art", Halo giddily charges between mutant industrial funk (Stallone The Reducer, Final Cut), thrusting electronic disco (Red Axes), deep techno (Parris), mind-altering acid-style intensity (Rrose), stomping, sweat-soaked peak-time techno (Machinewoman, FIT Siegel), polyrhythmic bass music (Facta, one of her Livity Sound collabs with Hodge) and an impressive array of cuts that defy easy categorization. The resultant all-action mix is nothing less than stunning.

Review: Let the sermon begin - Detroit techno legend and innovator Robert Hood steps up to deliver the latest installment of !k7's legendary DJ Kicks series and it's an edition well worthy of attention. The ordained minister leaves the minimal techno sound that he helped pioneer, for powerful, big room techno on this highly anticipated mix. Despite his famously linear approach, here he builds tension between tracks with suspenseful breakdowns throughout. Highlights include the direct impact of his own "Focus" and its factory floor stomp, his hypnotic rework of Landside's "Signs Of Change", the seething tension of Slam's "Remain" and the return of Space DJz' Ben Long who teams up with Belgian veteran Tom Hades on the sci-fi epic "The Knight Rider".

Review: Up next on DJ Kicks' acclaimed mix series is Numbers doyen and Glaswegian iconJackmaster. In his own words, the 24-track mix sees the charismatic Scot 'delivering an honest journey, unearthing a serious passion for the obscure boundaries of house and techno.' This double LP lifts out eight of the tracks most other DJs will want to get their mitts on, and joins the dots between his hometown of Glasgow with Denis Sulta's festival destroying bass driven epic "MSNJ", then NYC; with Eli Escobar's gutsy EBM-flavoured 'Tension (vinyl mix)". Berlin's status as a dance music mecca is referenced with Dutch transplant Anno Stamm's dark house stomper "A Night Out With Therese" and the legend himself Ricardo Villalobos, with his minimal techno classic from 1996 "Logohitz". DJ Kicks throw in a CD of the mix too!

Review: Some 21 years after it first hit record stores, Kemistry & Storm's legendary "DJ Kicks" mix is back in record stores. "You Don't Wash", which featured on Hyperdub boss Kode9's recent DJ-Kicks mix, gets a 12" release here on !K7 Records. First up is the flying Dutchman Martyn, whose remix showcases his inimitable brand of shuffling, raw percussion and rumbling bass, while Spaceape's vocals are chopped and rearranged to jostle with some intriguingly tense strings. Werk Discs chief Actress, the producer of one of 2010's best albums, turns the original into a warped Latin-tinged hip shaker with jingling, out of phase chimes and whistles.

Review: Although he's one of the most revered DJs in the UK with a wide following of like-minded eclectic music heads, Mr Scruff very rarely releases mix albums or compilations. It's for this reason that his edition of the "DJ Kicks" series is such a big deal. That mix itself - available on CD and digital download - is naturally superb, but his selections, which are showcased here in unmixed, DJ-friendly form, are also top-notch. Starting with the drowsy hip-hop soul of Max Graef's jazzy rework of Andreya Triana's "Gold", the Manchester veteran offers up a hot-to-trot mixture of downtempo soul (Sudan Archives), off-kilter Afro-tech (Tiger), ragga (Ding Dong), Floating Points style house (his own hook-up with CyberPunkJazz), drum workouts (Andy Ash), synth-powered proto-house (Alexander Robotnik), Latin beats and much more besides. Ace.

Review: Niklas Paschburg debuted in style with the moving "Oceanic" album on a !K7 sublabel back in 2018, and now he returns with more of his modern classical orchestrations. Very much in the vein of Frahm, Hopkins and the like, he deftly fuses beautifully composed orchestrations with electronic in subtle but powerful ways. On "Svalbard", the piano is front and centre a lot of the time, which lends the album a defined character. The album moves through a surge of different emotions from the taut (on "Cyan") to the scenic (on "Little Orc"), but Paschburg's deft touch on the keys remains the strongest sender. "Season Shift" is rightly an album centerpiece that tastefully balances occasional flourishes of electronica in amongst the classicisms.

Review: Given his productivity, it's rather a surprise to find that Alan Abrahams is Portable's first album for five years. Coming out on German behemoth !K7, the collection sees the affable South African exploring the potential of woozy, off-kilter electronic soul. Shot through with his usual blissful, synthesized beauty, atmospheric pads and yearning melodies, the set's 11 tracks veer from skittish, deep broken techno "More Than", and string-laden simplicity (the intensely beautiful "As For Me"), to tear-jerking ambience ("The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Drinker"), deep, malcnholic Afro-house ("Seraphin"), and Osunlade style, organic explorations (the wonderful "This Frozen Lake").

  1. Le Renard Bleu (19:54)
Review: You'll probably know Japanese percussionist Midori Takada from a recent reissue of her wonderful 1983 album, Through The Looking Glass, a piece of work that is often associated to the Balearic wave and the endlessly reinvented wheel that is ambient and drone. However, unlike many cheap imitations, Takada's music comes from the soul, or rather, from a purely spiritual point of view in terms of execution. The legendary artist is joined by Lafawndah, a young vocalist from NYC, and together they have conjured an awesome one-sider for Germany's mythical K7 imprint. "Le Renard Bleu" is a spectral voyage of gently morphing sounds, composed largely of subtle chimes and placid percussion, constantly evolving to reach a tumultuous peak of abstract sonics where Lafawndah's voice is transformed into mist. Wonderful.

Sprinting between 21st century R&B, jazz-funk, deep house, dancefloor jazz, broken beat, kwaito, dub, drum and bass and off-kilter, impossible to pigeonhole cuts, the musician, producer and DJ manages to both educate and entertain in equal measure. Along the way you'll find plenty of exclusives, including a number of his own previously unreleased productions.
