Review: This is Berliner Ant Orange's third release for Cologne's Karaoke Kalk and forms something resembling a trilogy for the label, while introducing more electronic ingredients and taking an increasingly exploratory approach to rhythm and composition. From the sexy and dusty late-night deepness of the dynamic opener "Right There", the super lo-slung funk of "Drunk In The Trunk", the evocative slo-mo soul of "Comfort Zone" or the tense yet mesmerizing neo-jazz of "Rudi Goes Offline" - this album truly marks a turning point in Ant Orange's sound. The name of the label comes from the 'Koeln-Kalk' district where the label started out. Over the past 20 years the label has amounted a superb catalog totalling well over 90 releases by a dazzling array of artists spanning the broadest possible spectrum of musical output.

Review: Hanno Leichtmann's "Nuit du Plomb" arises memories of days when every party, besides the obligatory dancefloor, had an ambient floor, too. Days when ambient served as a niche for creating music that just wouldn't have been possible in a band's collective and when musicians together with their entire electronic parc crouched on the floor and started jamming. Those where the days when every month you could make startling discoveries within an almost inexhaustible repertoire of electronic music. And yet Hanno Leichtmann's new album has nothing to do with a glorification of the past. This is not least due to the fact that the music on "Nuit Du Plomb" was originally made for a scenic lecture of Hans Henny Jahnn's novel "The Night Of Lead". It is thus rather a soundtrack recorded to illustrate the various scenes of the relatively unknown novel, the music supporting the sensation of images and spatiality. So although it wasn't his aim to make an ambient album Hanno Leichtmann pushes this very diversified musical genre a little more to the fore again. But the fact that Hanno Leichtmann uses the niche ambient once provided today shows that it is still there existing and that it survives despite all musical trends and tendencies. Above all it proves that it hasn't been exhausted in all its possibilities. Hanno Leichtmann is best known through his current solo projects Static (City Centre Offices, Earsugar) and Vulva String Quartett (Combination Rec). Leichtmann lives and works in Berlin.

Tolouse Low Trax
Cat: KALK 7912. Rel: 11 Jun 14

Experimental/Electronic
Sussing (Miles remodel)
Jeidem Fall (Wolf Muller remix)
Vineland
Eisenbahnzunge
Review: Yet another killer lopsided transmission from Tolouse Low Trax and Karaoke Kalk HQ which comes with added spice in the shape of remixes from Modern Lover Miles Whittaker and Themes From Lost Cities don Wolf Muller. It's these refixes that take centre stage, with material from Tolouse Low Trax's 2012 album Jeidem Fall the focus of Whittaker and Muller's attention and the results are nothing less than excellent. Far removed from his work as part of Demdike Stare or Millie + Andrea, Miles Whittaker's take on "Sussing" is a stuttering, low tempo trawl through malfunctioning electronics, whilst Wolfy boy turns in a wonderfully tropical rendition of "Jedeim Fall". Not to be outdone, the clutch of new Tolouse Low Trax productions are just as compelling, with "Vineland" a fuzzy excursion through chugging electro and "Eisenbahnzunge" a superb piece of Deutsche Kosmische.

Review: Toulouse Low Trax has always skirted on the fringes of wider recognition compared to some of his Salon Des Amateurs counterparts (think Lena Wilikens, Wolf Muller and Vladimir Ivkovic), but his legacy to date plots a fascinating course through underground and experimental electronic music with a kosmische bent. This 2012 album on Karaoke Kalk has been highly prized since its initial run first sold out, and it's great to see it being made available again as more people get hip to the incredible body of work behind this maverick auteur. The mood across Jeidem Fall is consistently moody and provocative, capturing the essence of Muslimgauze but replacing the explicit ethnic motifs with a murky abstraction of the Fourth World aesthetic, all tumbling percussion and un-placeable instrumental motifs.
