Review: Can a duo be a supergroup? You could certainly argue that Belief ticks that box, given that it's a collaboration between two titans of the experimental electronic music scene: LEX Records stalwart Bryan Hollon (Boom Bip, Neon Neon) and Warpaint drummer (and frequent sticks-woman for hire) Stella Mozgawa. Interestingly, they've chosen not to explore the challenging end of their output, but rather deliver a set of "improvisational techno" that draws inspiration from the early '90s work of 808 State, LFO and the like. That means wiggly TB-303 acid lines aplenty, alternately dreamy, dubbed-out and futuristic melodic motifs, sci-fi sounds aplenty, and beats that veer from throbbing four-to-the-floor energy to sweaty breakbeats and off-kilter post-electro grooves. The results are uniformly imaginative, impressive and entertaining.

Review: A decade has passed since Danger Mouse and MF Doom released The Mouse & The Mask, their first - and so far only - collaborative full-length under the Danger Doom alias. Ten years on, the cartoon-referencing album - featuring sampled guest appearances from various Adult Swim-affiliated characters - has lost none of its' allure. The combination of MF Doom's eccentric, on-point raps and Danger Mouse's brilliant beats - fluid, melodious, organic and featuring some genuinely brilliant sample sources - has a timeless quality often lacking from many big-name hip-hop projects. For that reason, it should now be considered a classic hip-hop album. If it's not in your collection already, snap up this 10th anniversary reissue.

Review: On initial 2009 release, Born Like This was widely considered a new chapter in the MF Doom story; the point when he cast aside the more comedic side of his mask-wearing, lyrically dextrous persona and grew up. Certainly, the album's themes - police brutality, life in the ghetto etc. - are weightier than earlier Doom sets. Musically, too, the beats - including contributions from Madlib, Jake One and previously unheard J Dilla instrumentals - seem to be darker and weightier, whilst retaining an essence of the easy listening influenced eccentricity that marked out Doom's previous work. As a result, Born Like This should be considered one of the masked producer/MC's strongest albums.

Review: Filipino artist Idris VicuNa may on the surface be creating homespun and blissed-out soundscapes that blend seasick synths, narcotic surrealism and dreamy melancholia, yet beneath lurks a realm where the personal meets the political, as a self-confessed slacker struggled to adapt to fatherhood whilst living amidst the oppressively right-wing regime of this homeland. At one point this woozy and enchanting sound - somewhere in the realm of the dreamlike psych-pop of Connan Mockasin and the electronic panoramas of Nite Jewel - might have been dubbed 'hypnagogic pop' yet it stands in the here and now as a land of exotic exploration all its own.

Review: Paul White evidently likes to keep himself busy. Last year saw the UK beat maker turn in a wonderfully psychedelic album for R&S, but any laurel resting was cast aside in favour of getting back in his studio to work with Florida rapper-singer Eric Biddines. Together the pair are Golden Rules, with their debut 13 track album Golden Ticket coming through UK hip-hop outpost Lex. Possessing a drawl similar to Outkast's Andre 3000, Biddines seems to switch between raps and singing with consummate ease and is pretty much the perfect foil for White's supreme production. Keep a look out for a guest spot from Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) on "Never Die", a towering highlight along with "Holy Macaroni".

Review: Second time around for MF Doom and Jneiro Janel's alternative hip-hop masterpiece, which first dropped this time last year. The original album - a whirlwind trip through the twisted minds of its creators, featuring guest appearances from Portishead's Beth Gibbons, Boston Fielder and Damon Albarn - still sounds fresh, and is here joined by a second disc featuring previously unheard cuts and reworks. The latter are of particular interest. Del The Funky Homosapien swings by to pep up "Viberian Son" with his classic flow, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood deliver a delightfully scuzzy version of "Retarded Fren", and Beck indulges his love of hip-hop with a typically eccentric, sample-heavy take on "Banished".

Review: LA producer Boom Bip and onetime Super Furry Animals singer Gruff Rhys made something of a splash with their 2008 debut album Stainless Style, a glistening collection of synth jams inspired by legendary car designer John Delorean. This long-delayed, two-disc follow-up takes little-known Italian leftwing activist Giangiacomo Feltrinelli as its inspiration, offering bizarrely upbeat synth-pop songs blessed with surprisingly weighty lyrics. It's an odd juxtaposition, but one that actually works rather well. In truth, the lyrics are almost irrelevant; what really stands out about Praxis Makes Perfect (we chuckled, at least) is the glistening melodies, stylish synths and clattering drum machine rhythms of Boom Bip's sparkling musical backing.
