Twilight (12")

  1. Twilight (3:55)
  2. Twilight (Jose Manuel Gypsy version) (6:56)
  3. Twilight (Jose Manuel Dub) (6:52)
  4. Twilight (Jose Manuel Voyage Voyage) (6:27)
Review: New York's Quinn Luke aka Bing Ji Ling is always up to some crazy shit. Whether it's far-out strains of exotica, electronic folk, or even some straight-up hill-billie funk, the nomadic artist is always one to look out for. He's up on Spain's excellent Lovemonk label, perennial leaders in leftfield disco and balearica, with the raunchy, funk-tastic guitar riffs of "Twilight", a tune that is so cool and laid-back it could be enjoyed by pretty much all walks of life. There's three version, though, all by Jose Manuel; the main remix drops in a house beat and something of a Latino sound, the dub goes deeper into the bass elements of the mix, and the Voyage Voyage mix takes the listener on a more daring journey, backed by a progressive edge. We love it.

Love Saves The Day (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: LMNKV 104. Rel: 30 Nov 18
  1. Love Saves The Day (6:36)
  2. Love Saves The Day (Rahaan remix) (8:00)
  3. Love Saves The Day (Percussion Jam) (5:33)
Review: Casbah strikes again with a powerful homage to the NYC foundations with this juicy, insatiably funky piece of disco soul. Driven by a belting vocal from Angela Goode, there's a strong sense of timelessness, honesty and raw funk that smacks with authenticity and one of the funkiest slap-bass breakdowns you'll hear all year. Chicago's Rahaan takes the remix duties with a pumping contemporary disco cut while Casbah strips things back himself for the essential DJ tool that is the percussion edit. Feel the love.

To Be Free (12")
Cat: LMNKV 105. Rel: 21 Feb 19
  1. To Be Free (6:41)
  2. Doing Our Own Thing (9:12)
Review: Back in November 2018, Oli Stewart AKA Casbah 73 delivered his most wholehearted tribute to the disco era yet, the brilliant "Love Saves The Day". On "To Be Free", he continues in a similar vein, doffing a cap to the pioneers of the Philly Soul sound via cut-glass strings, crunchy Clavinet lines, tasty electric piano solos, walking bass and a lead vocal from Angela (Angie) Gooden that stirs memories of disco divas of old. Stewart and his cohort of musicians go a little wild on the mostly instrumental disco-funk flipside, an exercise in dueling solos, lusty Latin horns, flanged guitars and heavy percussion that will get you hot under the collar for nine, all-action minutes. Brilliant stuff from start to finish from the experienced producer: don't sleep on this one.

Review: Spanish outfit Pajaro Sunrise resurfaces after The Collapse of 2016 with nine fresh tracks that once more draw upon Latin-tinged styles of synth pop, acoustic folk and indie-electronica. A romantic album for sure, its numbers like "Now Everything Makes Sense" and "Home" are the most affecting, the latter especially, with a dancefloor hit for the indie club to be found in "Leave The Rubbish Out". With other acoustic and pop numbers plotted elsewhere, the album comes together like a jam session between Phil Collins, Matias Aguayo and The Juan Maclean with cameos from Roy Orbison and Jose Gonzalez. Andale.

Review: Chip Wickham, who usually goes by the first name of Roger, returns to Madrid's excellent Lovemonk label with a mini LP to inaugurare the start of summer, which means a start to some pretty killer shades of balearica! In fairness, however, this album and the man's sound are much more in line with the jazzy end of the spectrum, breaking beats and forming new, forward-thinking arrangements. For instance, the opening "Shamal Wind" is a wonderful excursion into dreamier realms of the flute, while "Snake Eyes" picks up the tempo and makes way for an album thy can be plaid on your headphones, out on the car speakers, and most certainly in the dance! A wonderfully composed piece of music from a rising talent of true broken beat.

La Sombra (CD)

  2. Sling Shot

  5. Pushed Too Far

  7. La Leyenda Del Tiempo
Review: Arguably better known for his work as Kid Costa - or, for that matter, as part of Blue Mode - Roger "Chip" Wickham returns to Lovemonk with his first solo release for nigh on six years. It's a biggie two, marking his first trip into the full-length format. It sees him explore his love of jazz in all its form, flitting between Dave Brubeck-esque funkiness ("Sling Shot"), Kyoto Jazz Massive style workouts ("Red Planet"), spiritual epics (see "Tokyo Slow Mo"), cinematic fare ("Pushed Too Far") and thrillingly uptempo jazz-dance hits ("Le Leyenda Del Tiempo"). Throughout, his impeccable flute playing remains a constant feature.

Cat: LMNKV 102. Rel: 30 Nov 17
  1. The Beatnik (3:32)
  2. Rebel No 23 (4:02)
Review: As if his debut album La Sombra wasn't quite enough for us this year, Manchester/Madrid man about town blesses with two more originals. "The Beatnik" tickles with a classic funk lick that's leans hard on a cool off-beat break before Chip barges into the blend with his furious fluting. "Rebel No 23" takes us on jazzy dance into the realms of jazz thanks to its stand up bass walks, fluttering keys and Anderson-style vocal flute blasts. Chips up!

  3. (Soul) Rebel 23 (Reginald Omas Mamode IV remix) (3:30)
  4. Snake Eyes (Ishmael Ensemble remix) (8:11)
Review: If you've not yet got your ears around Roger 'Chip' Wickham's sensationally sunny, jazz-fired "Shamal Wind" mini-album, we suggest you check it out post-haste. In the meantime, Lovemonk has reminded us of its magnificence via a new set of reworks from some seriously hot producers. Max Graef handles side A, first serving up a chugging, mind altering and heavily percussive "Bongo Mix" of "Soho Strut", before reaching for the sub-bass and fizzing, juke-tempo jazz rhythms on the bonkers but brilliant "Bass Mix" of the very same song. Over on the flipside, Peckham beat-maker Reginald Omas Mamode IV serves up a dusty, Rhodes-laden take on "(Soul) Rebel 23" featuring his own soulful vocals, before Gilles Peterson favourites Ishmael Ensemble mix live jazz instrumentation with rolling house beats on a sublime revision of "Snake Eyes".
