Baz Bradley Special Editions
Cat: MWSE 009. Rel: 26 Feb 24

Balearic/Downtempo
Soul Boys (Acetate edit) (7:40)
Super Maxi (5:23)
Flight 207 (Gate One) (5:15)
Burn The Candle (6:24)
Review: Magic Wand welcomes Baz Bradley for a series of Special Editions that keep blissed-out late summer dancing sessions alive and possible even as days shorten and the sun fades away. He opens up with 'Soul Boys' (Acetate edit) which is an 80s disco jaunt with superb vocals and noodling funk rifts. 'Super Maxi' is a more stripped-back and aloof groove with sung-spoke vocals and hook melodies making for a weird yet wonderful vibe. 'Flight 207' (Gate One) is another slow-motion and dubbed-out disco funker then 'Burn The Candle' has a raw percussive twist.

Baz Bradley - "Exstatic Love" (5:13)
Dean Sunshine Smith - "Give A Little Bit" (Balearic Love rework) (9:58)
Secret Soul Society - "Groovin Up Slowly" (4:21)
Sermon 2 - "It's Not Me, It's You" (6:30)
Review: The 16th drop on Magic Wand finds the Balearic edit series welcomes Baz Bradley back after he made his debut outing on the last installment. He's stepping in with the beauteous 'Exstatic Love', which takes its funky source material in a thoroughly cosmic direction. Dean Sunshine Smith opts for the sentimental, sing-a-long side of the Balearic tradition with 'Give A Little Bit (Balearic Love Rework)'. Secret Soul Society takes things towards a sultry kind of deep house with some very familiar vocal snippets on 'Groovin Up Slowly' and Sermon 2 gets heavy on the feels with the massive synth lines of 'It's Not Me, It's You'.

Kate's Bush (Nocturnal edit) (5:37)
Kool Kats (7:10)
Lee Sure (Black Hashish dub) (5:26)
El Verano (4:31)
Review: The Coyote lads take a moment to chill from their ever-steady output on their Is It Balearic? label to drop this pearler for the Magic Wand edit series. It won't take a private gumshoe to work out the source material for 'Kate's Bush (Nocturnal Edit)', but you won't have heard the original simmering quite like this brooding version before. 'Kool Kats' is dripping in yacht rock delight with Mercurial vocal trysts over the top, while 'Lee Sure (Black Hashish Dub)' takes things far out into pure sundown wind-down territory. 'El Verano' completes the set with a beautiful, dusty lick of 70s funk, complete with sultry trumpet and the lightest of FX touches.

Ritter
Takin It
The Woman
Dover
Review: Coyote is back with a third volume of its Special Editions series and once again it is one that will transport you to some steamy dance floor by the Med at sundown. The opener 'Ritter' is a glorious mix of downbeat chords and Balearic beats with 80s synths and an exotic vocal. 'Takin It' then slows things down to reevaluate some lush acoustic guitar frets and languid funk grooves, then 'The Woman' gets even more deep, more seductive, and horizontal. It's got a fat, lazy bassline and go-slow grooves that cannot fail to reduce your pulse before 'Dover' picks it up again with some more psyched-out and cosmic disco-funk sounds.

Lonely (8:22)
Western Revolution (6:26)
Love Home (5:22)
Luca (6:31)
Review: It is time to succumb to the sounds of the Magic Wand label once more and this eighth sonic spell is another one that will leave you happily helpless. It finds the Coyote lads step away from their fine work on Is It Balearic? to cook up two top edits. First up they offer 'Lonely' - a broody, steamy and shimmering tropical Balearic workout and then comes the organic and lazy drums of 'Western Revolution' with an iconic gravelly vocal. There are folk-tinged Americana sounds on 'Love Home' and laid-back disco licks on the seductive 'Luca' to make this a summer party essential.

Tied Up (Hanners edit)
Happy Together (Hanners edit)
Lucky Number (Hanners edit)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Having previously contributed to the Ruf Kutz series, Manchester-based editor extraordinaire Andi Hanley lands on Magic Wand with some off-grid treatments seriously worthy of your attention. First up on the A side is "Tied Up (Hanners edit)," which locks into a snaking, submerged and deliciously tense Afro work out for show-stopping dancefloor drama. "Happy Together" is much smoother by comparison, all laid back island boogie with cheery synth strings and ample bass sleaze to keep you warm at night. "Lucky Number" is a peppier 70s flavoured strutter that teases its ingredients out over a sustained set of riffs.

Miama
Noche De Blanco
Danza Del Sol
Review: Magic Wand is a Balearic/disco/funk/ re-edit label that is part of the Is It Balearic? family of labels. For its sixth edition in the Special Editions series, they have got New York City via Ibiza-based legend Willie Graf with DJ Pippi, who combine powers again to drop an EP of 'muy balear edits'. From the low-slung heater 'Miama' to the sensual slo-mo funk of 'Noche De Blanco' over on the B side, which is followed by the late night disco deviance of 'Danza Del Sol' with its sweltering Latin rhythms playing centre stage throughout.

Rain (Anton Klint edit) (6:26)
Special O (Anton Klint edit) (4:54)
Full Dose Of Love (Anton Klint edit) (4:27)
Marie (Anton Klint edit) (4:20)
Review: The latest featured editor to contribute to Magic Wand's Special Editions series is former Public Possession regular - and recent Internasjonal signing - Anton Klint. As you'd perhaps expect, the tracks he's chosen to rework tend towards the eccentric and more crate-digging end of the Balearic spectrum. For proof, check the slip-sliding fretless bass, bubbly drum machine rhythms and AOR-goes-synth-pop vibes of opener 'Rain', the sax-laden, mid-80s AM radio goodness of 'Special O', and the lolloping, late night soft rock-meets-reggae pop brilliance of 'Marie'. Best of all though is 'Full Dose of Love', an extra-percussive, delay-laden chunk of undulating dub that's just crying out to be played loud at sunset.

Make Time For Love (Craig Bratley Refix) (7:16)
Lazy Ligers - "Pinball Dreams" (Kacper Kapsa edit) (6:41)
Jungleboy (1-800 COOLGUY edit) (5:53)
Bella - "Una Splendida Giormata" (Mursia rework) (4:38)
Review: Get ready for another heavy dose of disco goodness from Magic Wand, comprising of choice edits and re-rubs from a cast of devout diggers who know how to dust off and spruce up obscure and widely adored party tackle of all persuasions. Craig Bratley's re-fix of breezy funker "Make Time For Love" pops the roof down to bask in early evening sunshine, while Kacper Kapsa's edit of Lazy Ligers' "Pinball Dreams" nudges the spaced out Balearic aesthetic into decidedly trippy territory. 1-800 COOLGUY's edit of "Jungleboy" is a pert and punchy slice of maximalist synth pop, and Mursia's rework of "Una Splendida Giormata" by Bella gets choppy with the piano samples in fine style, aimed squarely at peak season on the Adriatic coast.

Deep Joy (JC Salinas edit)

Think Like A Lover (Rare cuts edit)
Review: Magic Wand is a label you can count on to deliver the disco edits and original productions you never knew you needed, calling on a strong cast of remixers and editors with the knowledge they offer up truly fresh propositions for your party delectation. JC Salinas has been previously clocked on Is It Balearic? and now steps up with a summery slice of island boogie from an undisclosed geographical location. Salso Picante's "Gotham" is a motorik beast of a track with plenty of 80s stylings and funk where it counts, while 1-800 COOLGUY gets into "Teaser" and rewards the faithful listener with a huge sound and splashed with colour and hair spray. The Rare Cuts edit of "Think Like A Lover" closes this excellent slab of wax out with a smooth, seductive roller for those more tender moments.

Really - Last Waltz
Review: Dropping in the same week as the latest plate on parent label Is It Balearic, the seventh round of Magic Wand Edits arrives brandishing a quartet of choppers delights from Messrs Coyote, Al Gobi, Last Waltz and The Two Mamarrachos. It's the latter Spanish pair that open proceedings with a wonderfully laid back take on America's "Muskrat Love" adding some substance to the beat for the appreciation of contemporary discotheque DJS. This one's been racking up Soundcloud plays for two years now so props to Magic Wand for scooping it up. Coyote are in fine form on "Mamy" whilst recent Disco Bloodbather and Ibiza denizen Al Gobi demonstrates his capacity for the slower approach with the excellent Gordon Lightfoot revision - touch of the Terje RVNG of The NRDs on this one. Tusk Wax's Tyneside correspondents Last Waltz opt for the Eddie C approach with equally good results of the delay heavy tweaker "Really". Solid Disco for the Disco.

Simple Man (Coyote edit)

Slowly Grail (Groove Me rework)
Review: Bathing in the soul-affirming wonder of the 70s and 80s, the Magic Wand posse know exactly what they're after in a groove, and here they turn to regular contributor Coyote to get busy with the razor and re-align some dusty old gems. "Simple Man" is prime high-waist funk with just a few light touches to keep the shuffle and swagger going for longer, while "Daylight" instead finds itself drifting on a slow and serene concoction. "Africa Africa" is a more aggressive affair, piling the drums on hard and maximising on a tribal vocal turn without much of a melody for relief. "Slowly Grail" gets reworked by Groove Me, pumping over an arpeggio with all the desire and longing of the best endless disco tracks.

Outstanding (Coyote edit)
I've Got A Big Bee
Review: Beards at the ready for the third round of the much played and discussed Magic Wand series from the people who brought you Is It Balearic? Frenchman DJ Steef ruled the inaugural release with his killer Black Sabbath edit and he's back to open proceedings here with the delightfully slippery Gallic disco of "Triolisme". Alongside this Coyote drop the first of two contributions in the shape of "A Little Time" which fans of Eighties power ballads from transatlantic groups will be more than familiar. Equally, you'd have to have a poor grasp of popular music to not spot the source for "Outstanding"!

La Grenouille (Stupid Human dub Twonk) (5:13)
Review: Magic Wand have been offering up the finest disco edit wares since 2010, and they hit their twelfth release with yet more tempo and era spanning delights from forgotten corners. Mushrooms Project lay the warbling French space synth tones on heavy for their edit of "Capeesco Mina", while Coyote gets into an utterly blissful mindset on the gentle swaying acoustic funk of "Sevilla 9". The Two Mamarrachos get the soul stirring on their heartfelt treatment of "Buenos Sencillos", and then the most overtly clubby moment comes in at the 11th hour from Stupid Human with the urgent throb of "La Grenouille".

Hanging (Coyote edit)
In Your Wildest Dreams (Magellanic Cloud edit)
We Love Japan Brother Ninjas
Dreams (Oyama edit)
Review: Is It Balearic..? side label Magic Wand return for an eighth installment here with founders Coyote present and correct and complimented by productions from Magellanic Cloud & Oyama. It's Coyote that commence proceedings with the hazy eyed disco loopery of "Hanging" which sounds like a glorious Love Unlimited Orchestra moment unfurled into infinity. "In Your Wildest Dreams" finds Magellanic Cloud in a more horizontal mood, with a gently throbbing undercurrent adding a hint of darkness. The uncredited "We Love Japan Brother Ninjas" is possibly the highlight here, sitting somewhere between heavily dubbed disco and proto house, whilst the Oyama edit of "Dreams" will appeal to fans of Torn Hawk's plaintive guitar noodlings.

Review: The ever-spotless edit bastions Magic Wand continue their great work with another quad of stunning Balearically-minded versions. Each one of them will stir a soul at forty paces with notable highlights coming from Coyote's stunning sun-kissed take on Toto's classic "Rosanna" and the track "Be Balearic" which takes the J Dilla and Common record "It's Your World" and twists the focus on to Common's dad's Gil Scott Heron-style spoken word soliloquy. Beautiful.

Review: Magic Wand and Matsoaka deliver up 5 mysterious Balaeirc treasures from around the World. 'Parlband Utmed Kusten' with its glistening percusion and strings opens the EP. 'Jah Banana' is next with more funked up drums and horns. On the flip we have 'Alligator', with its Afro/Iberian guitars and vocals. Gentle early 90s breakbeats power the seductive 'Shish Balearic' and 'Asian Dance Groove' closes out with loose, percussive rhythms and funky guitar rifts.

Review: Mind Fair have been around the block with their strain of disco-infused house music, stopping off at Golf Channel, International Feel and Kinfolk amongst others, so you know they've got you covered for classy edits that are actually useful and interesting. This heavyweight drop for Magic Wand kicks off with the righteous stomp of "Holding On" before dropping into a reworking of uptempo jazz funk classic "Feeling Good" by Francine McGee. "All Night Soca" beefs a classic cover of Lionel Ritchie up for the dance, while "Mastermind" finishes the record off with some cool and deadly funk.

Buyu (Mushrooms Project edit) (4:39)
Review: The discerning diggers' disco edit label of choice is back with more tricks conjured up from the top hat of party grooves past. Magic Wand have just the kind of quality control you want in an edit label, which is no more apparent than on the slow and sticky funk of Osmose's "Pour Myself" which opens up this latest 12". Sweetooth is marginally more animated but still resolutely chill with the Balearic overtones of "Edith & The Kingpin Remake". Baz Bradley unfurls some slick funk lines embellished with ecstatic piano, while Mushroom Project's edit of "Buyu" shakes things up with a heavy dose of Latin percussion.

Review: You can always count on Magic Wand to bring a classy edge to any edit they press, and their latest batch of re-rubs is no exception. There's a downtempo slink and Balearic haze to the tracks on offer here, leading in with RSS' Clandestine Dub' of 'Somebody Told Me' before Baz Bradley takes over with the piano-powerd paean to tripping, 'Acid Love Bath'. Secret Soul Society slip into something more comfortable as they sample Whitney Houston for 'When The Night' and then the CC edit of What I Am does some magic with an eternal Wham! banger.

Craig Peyton - "Be Thankful For What You Got" (Rune Lindbaek edit) (7:31)
Angel Tears - "Ishka" (Rune Lindbaek edit) (5:20)
Review: Is It Balearic? sister label Magic Wand can do no wrong with its long-standing series of cult re-edits. The "Special Editions" branch makes its first move of the year with this smokin' hot clutch of nudged up heaters edited by Rune Lindbaek, leading in with a steamy, dreamy version of Lowrell Simons' "Love Message". Lindbaek also tackles "Hologramas" by Frederico Estevez, simmering the track down to a purposeful, immersive drum roll embellished with nothing but some fluttering flute. His take on Craig Peyton's "Be Thankful For What You Got" is all thrumming arps underpinning a cool and deadly synth pop take on the classic soul jam. The final edit sees Lindbaek riding roughshod on Angel Tears' "Ishka", creating a high drama groover shot through with Eastern mysticism.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Psychemagik's Danny McLewin has been quietly cooking up some choice edits under the Skyrager alias lately, and here he is launching a new label Magic Wand Special Editions with four finely thought-out groovers for those who like their Balearic business smooth and silky. There's a hefty dose of soul pouring out of these cuts, leading in with the synth-tastic sweep of "Dream Merchant" before "Hawaiian Love Song" slides in with some seductive Rhodes licks and romantic vocals. "Magik Mountain" is blue-eyed boogie of the highest calibre, and "Yeah Yeah Yeah" edges a little understated disco into the mix for long, balmy nights dancing under the moon with your beloved.
