Review: If you want drama, you got it. Algiers return with their third album, taking inspiration from Blake Butler's 2011 novel of the same name, a scribe they consider to be a friend, channeling the unsettling metaphorical horrors the book disturbs readers with, and carving an unsettling, dread-filled and neo-Gothic score from those body parts. At its most delicate, perhaps "Losing Is Ours", it's a tense, brooding, dark gospel journey into some imagined place conjured from the recesses of the mind you don't always feel comfortable exploring. In other moments we're talking frenetic contemporary punk ("Void"), guns - or at least guitars - blazing. Recorded in just two weeks, it's the band's most concise and coherent work to date, and also their most self-analytical and introverted. Themes can still be read as huge, but the global struggles of the past are now being read through more personal traumas.

Review: Fiercely righteous, intensely passionate and politically driven, the Atlanta-birthed Algiers are carving out a unique niche for themselves with a brand of gospel-punk that is as experimental as it in incandescent. Noiserock shapes, electro grooves share space with startlingly rich and powerful vocals from Franklin James Fisher. Emotionally charged ditties like 'Blood' and 'Black Eunuch are as influenced by Nina Simone as industrial hip-hop troupe dalek, and the resulting record makes Algiers a powerful argument against anyone who claims that modern music is apolitical and the art of the protest song is dead.

Review: Anyone bemoaning the lack of ire-igniting political invective and potent protest records amidst the tension and uncertainty of 2017 should look no further than Algiers, whose follow-up to their blue-touchpaper igniting debut is a thing of floor-shaking intensity and cerebrally stimulating potency. A electrifying and diverse musical palette that extends from post-punk and gritty Gun Club-esque rock 'n' roll to soul, hip hop and even John Carpenter style soundtrack stylings acts as a backdrop to the feverish diatribes against oppression and injustice of vocalist Franklin James Fisher. Defying expectation to stand proud as a genre-elusive and fiercely uncompromising call to arms, 'The Underside Of Power' is a forward-thinking work of maverick malevolence and thrilling intensity.

Review: Just when you thought it was a certainty that all the great, impossible to define bands had found their way to your playlist, along come Algiers. For the newcomers, let's just say you're in for a wild and unfettered treat. To the already-committed, props for paying attention to a group that have quietly - recognition wise at least - been rising to the top of the relevant and aurally groundbreaking list since 2015. Hailing from Atlanta, there's an undercurrent of Deep South rock 'n' roll and blues-tinged grit to things here, but so much more is happening knowing where to start is gonna be difficult. Electronica, gospel, punk, jazz, hip hop, apocalyptic prophecies, and political messaging somehow both obtuse and poetic. In short, Algiers make the vast majority of noise-makers look and sound benign.

Review: Julien Baker's debut 'Sprained Ankle' garnered critical acclaim on its release last year for its impressive writing. Considering Baker's age, at only 22 years old she's already creating worlds of stunning dream-pop with a craftsmanship that could stir envy in more experienced songwriters. 'Turn Out The Lights' showcases her talent even further, exploring a melancholy world against a backdrop of sparse echoing instrumentation. The moments of subtle intensity are striking, such as the album's cinematic opening 'Over', whose stirring strings and sparse piano pour seamlessly into the next track 'Appointments. Baker's voice is controlled and her harmonies are arresting, and she uses expansive vocal layering to build intensity, pulling back just before it overbears the listener. This impressive second milestone in Baker's work is heartfelt, cathartic and more than impressive.

Review: RECCOMENDED
Despite her personal challenges, it's safe to say that Julien Baker sounds like a decent person. The sort of artist whose bandmates and peers have observed distributing gig riders among local homeless people. A musician who isn't afraid to not only put it all out for us to see, but swing the spotlight round to fully focus on and analyse herself, in public.

That's certainly the overriding feeling you get from Little Oblivions, her latest long form outing. Themes of guilt, elusive redemption, personal inconsistencies and failings are constant, as if we're being asked if we can tolerate these traits and behaviours before signing up to the fan club. Musically, it's just as memorable, Baker - largely known for her pared back approach to country-infused indie folk rock - has put everything into this, switching gears to focus on louder, larger, more complicated arrangements, and pulling it off with aplomb.

Review: The poker-faced, jeans-wearing trio Bar Italia are back. Thus far, and across a sparse and steady stream of largely digital singles and albums - with grainy, Photo Booth and MS Paint-style visual editing to boot - they've managed to summon a strange form of mysterious, but relationally sad Britishness in their music. In our opinion they're often mis-touted as a shoegaze act, so we hope their latest LP and first-time Beggars release Tracey Denim here dispels that myth. Whether getting at the just-out-of-reach noughties blindspot nostalgia of Tracey Beaker, or nodding to the depressive relic-making of Tracey Emin, one fact remains: this is Bar Italia's most refined work yet, taking their increasingly emo sound to its most logical conclusions, while demonstrating mastery over the same boxy, warped naivete that has always defined them.

Review: Considering their penchant for spinning yarns and the cinematographically-suited nature of much of their work, it's surprising "Days Of The Bagnold Summer" is only Belle & Sebastian's second shot at a movie score. The last was 2001's '"Storytelling", accompanying Todd Solondz's movie of the same name, and they certainly did a good job then. So, high expectations this time round. For those unfamiliar, their latest foray into the film world partners the directorial debut of Simon Bird, best known to many as one of "The Inbetweeners". The flick, an adaptation of Joff Winterhart's 2012 graphic novel, chronicles the life and times of a teenage metalhead and his single mother. The album perfectly accompanies but also contributes to that tale. Highly emotive instrumental tracks and classic B&S songs-proper, this OST is destined to go down well with the band's true believers.

Review: The Glasgow-based indie-pop mainstays have continually challenged themselves throughout their life as a band, and Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance is another step forward, again proving themselves to be not as easily pigeonholed in the insular worlds of twee indie as their detractors might have imagined when they emerged as a cult concern in the late '90s. "Enter Sylvia Plath" even takes their trademark stylings to the dancefloor, no less than a disco stomper redolent of a more bookish Hot Chip, whilst "The Party Line" is proof positive that their pop muscles can be formidable when flexed. A charming collection for diehards and new converts alike.

Review: Twenty-two years into their career, Scotland's veterans of indie-pop Belle & Sebastian offer a collated series of three EPs. It's a well played move by the band; each EP is strong in its own right, and together form an impressive full-length. Long-term fans will recognise the material here as some of their finest work in the mould of joyous and upbeat indie-pop the group established around 2003 with 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress'. The wit and brevity of their anecdotal songwriting is as robust as ever as they dip into a range of styles; choppy jungle-esque rhythms of 'We Were Beautiful', the slinking groove of 'Poor Boy', the steady Americana of 'I'll Be Your Pilot' and the jaunty-pop of 'Cornflakes'. This box set is essential to the collections of established Belle & Sebastian fans, but its diverse sounds and overarching sense of fun makes it a warm welcome to new fans too.

Review: Belle and Sebastian's A Bit of Previous is a classic album that found the pair at their melodic best. It showcase their superb knack for songwriting and will fill your head with earworms and pithy lyrics that you will not be able to forget. Amongst the self-produced tunes are some moments of beautiful melancholia as well as lots of what you would expect from the band. It is infused with the experience and sense of responsibility that comes with age as well plenty of musical bravado. There's a reason this is one of the UK's best love pop acts.

Review: When the world seems like it's coming apart at the seams, you can always rely on Belle & Sebastian to lift your spirits. It may have been a while since we last heard from the long-serving Glaswegian combo - A Bit of Previous, their tenth album, is also their first for seven years - but the old magic still remains. While the lyrics deal with all manner of subjects - not least the march of time and the weight of their own musical history - the accompanying music is largely triumphantly cheery, or at the very least the sonic equivalent of Prozac. As a result, standouts are plentiful, with our picks including the glassy-eyed, gospel-tinged Americana-soul fusion of 'If They're Shooting at You', the pedal steel-sporting indie-pop breeze of 'Young and Stupid' and the fuzzy, low-slung, post-punk/indie-pop fusion of 'Unnecessary Drama'.
