Lack Of Love EP (12" reeditado)
Cat: MATH 051. Rel: 09 Oct 17
Deep House
  1. Lack Of Love (Summer Of 88) (extended replay) (12:57)
  2. Reck The Joint (Steve Poindexter Reck The House remix) (8:04)
Review: Mathematics continues their fine run in 2011 with a slice of acid house history from the legendary Adonis. All the way back in 1988, Adonis teamed up with Charles B and dropped "Lack Of Love". It's presented here by Jamal Moss's label in a new "Summer Of Love 88 - Extended Replay" version that retains all the delightful and unpredictably raw rhythms that duck between heavy 303 usage and tub thumping gospel leads. You have to marvel at the chaotic epicness of a track which is over twenty years old and probably produced on the most primitive of hardware. On the flip Mathematics mainstay Steve Poindexter drops an equally demented remix of Adonis' 1989 jacker "Reck The Joint" that double dares you to dance.

  1. Tired Feet
  2. Dreamin
  3. Cruising
  4. Silence In The Morning
Review: The young, up and coming Zurich producer delivers a four track EP for legendary Chicago based imprint, Mathematics. It is prime time deep Chicago house and techno territory with raw, jacking machine beats, lush synths and a warm and melancholic, vintage vibe.

The title track kicks off the EP with some slick production on a slowed down techno workout. Ping-ponging chords, deep sub bass, spacey synths and hi-fidelity beats with a techno sensibility collide in this spiralling track. Most interestingly, the bassline never stays still, constantly evolving, changing and adapting whilst always ensuring the groove remains in full swing. The piano drenched "Dreamin" is up next, keeping things moving along with more old school vibes. It is the squelching bass that gives the track that real old school rave feel but the distinct, sharp handclaps and acute hi-hats are also handy in that department. "Crusing" is awash with flashes of synths that are peppered with the stabbing beats of late 90s techno. Finishing with "Silence in the Morning," we are dropped into a vast sounding, ambient downtempo track. Yet after easing you in, that ambience gives way to a huge yet sluggish 4/4 house groove that takes you all the way in.

The mysterious Contra Communem Opinionem adds yet more intrigue to his growing reputation with his Chicago house abstractions on this EP. Soaked in his own inimitable attitude, the only way to get to grips with the young Swizz is to go and check it out for yourselves.

Review: Jamal Moss is seemingly always releasing music in one shape or form, but it feels like the Chicago artist, DJ and label owner goes through particularly fertile production patches every now and again. Right now, we are definitely in the midst of one such period with Thanks 4 the Tracks U Lost Volume 2 a second welcome salvage operation from the Faces Of Drums project in as many months. The Faces of Drums is of course Moss and Poindexter and this triplet of productions dating from the mid-90s will satisfy anyone in need of some deranged drum tracks for their DJ sets. "The Lost Tracks 6" is a particularly cruddy exercise in rhythmic enlightenment.

Review: Ok, so this is pretty f****** special! While it's obvious to state that Jamal Moss's Mathematics Recordings is one of the best outlets for contemporary house and techno from the Western hemisphere, the arrival of new material from The Faces Of Drums (Moss and Steve Poindexter) is quite special, given the latter has become something of a rarity around the shelves. All three tracks are straight-up Chicago nastiness which had apparently been lost until now: "The Lost Tracks 1" is a raw-as-hell pipebomb full of natural distortion and flanger business, "The Lost Tracks 2" is wonky and boasts a mean low-end bump, while "The Lost Tracks 3" is more sluggish and corpulent but nonetheless jacking and vicious in nature. Absolutely recommended.

  4. Analog Bulldog
Review: John Heckle's debut album Second Son was undoubtedly one of 2011's highlights, traversing eclectic terrain, from beatless ambient interludes to raw analogue jams and heaving acid. Mathematics offers a timely reminder of how stunning it was with this twelve inch offering of the four tracks that featured on the CD release but not the double LP edition. The ever lolloping "One Self" demonstrates the Liverpudlian McNulty lookalike at his subaqueous, tape chewed best, whilst the beatless "I & I" oscillates with wildly experimental tones and vague hints of eastern enlightenment. From here, the orchestral touches that grace the deliciously utopian euphoria of "Fly City" provides some welcome respite while the brilliantly named "Analog Bulldog" jackhammers away at your senses with a relentless energy. The four tracks here encapsulate perfectly why Jamal Moss was so keen to release Heckle's long player.

Review: Its no surprise that the Mathematics label is releasing Hieroglyphic''s lost Chicago tracks from the days of old, because this guy is clearly obsessed. If one didn''t know better, these tracks could easily be mistaken for techno tunes from 15 years ago...which is a good thing of course.
