Review: The judicious Minimal Wave clan deliver another brilliant compilation of rare and wonderful music from the 1980's, this time an anthology of the best work from Japanese artiste Tomo Akikawabaya. Sourcing these songs in their original format has become harder and harder over the years, so they've really done us a favour with this effort. The double LP is made up of loneseom drones, lo-fi drum machine grooves and gorgeous synth work, all coated in Akikawabaya's wonderful vocal stance. The Japanese artiste has a unique style that borders on the melancholic, yet her music is always charged by a driving, proto techno feel. This is one to check if you weren't in the know.

Review: A much needed repress for one of Minimal Wave's best and most impressive looking archival releases here. Originally issued four years ago, Synthesize pulled together some nine tracks from the archives of Autumn, aka Belgian duo Peter Bonne and Geert Coppens whose musical experiments together began in the 1970s and took full flight the next decade. This collection's inspiration comes from the 1981 &" of the same name that Autumn laid to tape in under seven hours, with both tracks featured and complemented by a further array of primitive electronics and supple synth experiments. It's worth it alone for the nervous energy of "Night In June" and "Laughter Of A Madman".

Review: Minimal Wave presents a 4 song 7" EP by legendary German band Bal Pare. The band was formed in 1980 by Kirsten Klemm, Manfred Asmus and Matthias Schuster. Schuster, the brainchild behind the band, is also known for these projects: Geisterfahrer, Im Namen Des Volkes, Jeanette Und Das Land Z, and Das Institut. The four songs were recorded between 1981-1984 and are all previously unreleased. The songs range from really original, danceable dark synth with an early industrial feel to warmer synth pop, the last song featuring Kirsten on vocals. On colored vinyl with a hand silk screened heavy card stock jacket, a beautiful release, limited to 600 numbered copies.

Review: Coming soon. Minimal Wave presents a full length LP by UK band Circuit 7. Circuit 7 are Martyn Good & Andy Partington who made essential new wave, releasing two 7" singles in 1984, Video Boys & Modern Story followed by the release of two songs on a highly sought after compilation called The Offering Of Isca. The LP features both previously released and unreleased tracks (including the single version of Video Boys as well as an unreleased studio version), is pressed on neon green 180 gram vinyl and comes in an inner sleeve printed with all their lyrics as well as a heavy weight outer jacket.

Sacred Dance
Review: This EP is a new and very welcome side of the Minimal Wave label that I didn't expect to find! In the same way that classic Chris and Cosey manage to do, Graham Philip D'Ancey's Sacred Heart has four solid cuts that simultaneously appeal to the Italo, Chicago house, minimal synth/cold wave AND deep house heads! It has the creepy tempo of some of the more mid-tempo cuts from Fingers Inc. (mainly instrumental though) mixed with the flourishes of Italo (see "Sacred Heart" and "Sacred Blood"). "Sacred Passion" has a little bit of the more obvious electro-pop stylings, but it's "Sacred Dance" (along with the aforementioned "Sacred Heart") that really takes the cake here. The track has the total thuddy crawl/synth stab of Theo Parrish's "Dirt Rhodes" or his synthy-er, recently re-released Parallel Dimensions album, but with a darker edge and unexpectedly great boogie down flutes in the mix! As always, this EP is housed in beautiful, very well thought out packaging plus a bit of a cherry on top: 160 gram white vinyl (a first for Minimal Wave.) This is an EP of rare beauty that will sound as great alongside Throbbing Gristle's "United" as it does, Fingers Inc.'s "Feeling Sleazy" or even a slow Lindstrom track! Recommended! Review: With Minimal Wave at their current celebrated level, it's nice of them to occasionally dig into their archives and reissue some of their earliest releases for those Johnny Come Lately's who might have missed out first time around. Having done the right thing with an all too timely reissue of Das Ding's HSTA late last year, Veronica Vasicka's label now turn their attentions to Blackpool and revisit Spy Thriller by Das Kabinette. Originally released back in 2008, this eight track collection brings together material the trio of Michael Hall, David Bracher and Craig Hemmings recorded in the early 80s including the cult hits "The Cabinet" and "Fudge It" which appeared on a 1983 7". Fans of Silent Servant mixtapes will probably be familiar with these tracks whilst the remaining six tracks are typically unreleased studio productions that paint a fascinating picture of primitive synth music that's subtley touched by the death throes of New Romanticism.

Review: Initially released in 2010, Minimal Wave's retrospective of obscure French '80s outfit Deux remains one of the label's most sought-after compilations. Here, it gets a deserved re-press, allowing a whole new generation of listeners to fall in love with the quirky works of the Lyon-based duo. The album's ten tracks, which were drawn from various obscure cassettes and seven-inch singles, effortlessly join the dots between moody electro, cold-wave, new wave and eccentric synth-pop, reflecting the pair's esoteric approach to wayward electronic pop. This second edition comes in a hand-numbered edition of 999 copies, with Minimal Wave's usual attention to detail present on the weighty packaging.

Review: "Game & Performance" from Deux remains one of the favourite transmissions in the ever blossoming discography of Minimal Wave, while the duo of Gerard Pelletier and Cati Tete are clearly second only to fellow Lyon act In Aeternam Vale in Veronica Vasicka's affections when it comes to her personal favourite French exponents of 80s minimal synth. Having already released a Deux retrospective in 2010 entitled Decadence, the Brooklyn label now presents Golden Dreams, a four track EP of studio and demo tracks that Pelletier and Tete recorded from 1985 onwards. Typically all four tracks are previously unreleased and have been newly remastered for this 12" issue - on golden vinyl no less! Final track "Fam Fam" perhaps comes closest to recapturing the magic of "Game & Performances" stripped down minimal synth compositions and hushed vocal duets, but all four tracks will prove temptation personified to Minimal Wave regulars.

Review: French synth duo Deux are real cult favourites. The pair met in Lyon in 1981 and soon started working together on what became their signature stripped-down synth-pop sound complete with chilly vocals duets. Minimal Wave now have a four-track EP from Gerard Pelletier and Cati Tete which comes following other outings on this label such as Decadence in 2010 and 2012's Golden Dreams EP. It features three remastered mixes of the eponymous underground classic 'Let's Go !' as well as a never before released version of 'Everybody's Night'. It's a must-cop for fans of this brilliant pair.

Review: Talk about prototypes. Futurisk are about as relevant to the development from punk to post to synth to New Wave as anything else you're likely to come across (this week at least). And yet after delivering a pair of sell out albums and generating quite the buzz around their live shows, just as soon as they came they vanished into the scuzzy ether circa 1984.

Gone but not forgotten thanks to astute heads at the Minimal Wave label, who clearly know a good thing when they see it, this collection showcases the strange mix of art, brute force, dancefloor, bar fight and hallucinogenic experience these Florida obscurities were all about. Before their time for sure, you can't help but also wonder if their bloody nosed synth sound would have stayed longer had they been born a few thousand miles closer to Europe, or at least in New York.

Review: Originally released back in the early '80s, Veronica Vasicka's label has done its audience a fine service by re-releasing Portrait by Swiss duo Guyers Connection. Full of self-conscious vocals and in places decidedly lo-fi synth lines, it's surprising and disappointing that this collection wasn't a big hit first time round. After all, both "Pogo of Techno" and "Keep the City Clean" are as catchy as an oddball Yazoo, "Die Grille" is a jaw-dropping, windswept synth composition and "National Und Stander" sees the duo fuse ponderous piano lines with pulsing, rippling basslines. Best of all though is "Ein Glas Voll Gurken" a breathy synth-pop song that could have conquered charts had it been sung in English.

Ultrabase
Review: Lyon group In Aeternam Vale have been a long term fixture in the Minimal Wave release schedule, commencing with a self-titled compilation back in 2009 which has latterly been complemented by a further LP and several 12?s that have revealed band leader Laurent Prot to be a master of extended electronic productions that sound very much ahead of their time. This is demonstrated once more on Machine a Laver 12 which features two unreleased gems excavated from Prot's sizeable archives. Attentive followers of Minimal Wave manoeuvres will no doubt recognise the "12 minutes of pure electronic hypnotica" that is the title track from Vasicka's recent guest mix for Benji B. It's complemented by the equally long form "Ultrabase," a dub techno composition originating from 1990 which feels just as revelatory as the extended edition of "Highway Dark Veins" released on Minimal Wave last year. Wonderfully presented as always, the two tracks have been pressed on the most electric blue of heavyweight clear vinyl by Minimal Wave.

Review: After a recent excellent outing on the Jealous God label, In Aeternam Vale returns for Minimal Wave duty with the Gnd Lift 12". The long running project of Lyon artist Laurent Prot, the 12" focussed archival transmissions on Minimal Wave tend to be some of the label's best releases and that is certainly the case here. Lead track "Gnd Lift" weighs in at a mighty 14 minutes and is up there with "Dust Under Brightness" in our favourite IA V mind benders; serious slowed down murky proto techno vibes! Complementing this J'ai Mange Des Nerfs" echoes some of Prot's earlier wave-based experiments and "Animals Don't Mind" is the epitome of foreboding primitive electronics. Pressed on 160 gram clear transparent deep purple vinyl and housed in another excellent sleeve from Veronica Vasicka.

Calling Somewhere (14:52)
Review: Fans of mechanical techno-not-techno sounds will be all over Minimal Wave's latest transmission from 80s French underground heroes In Aeternam Vale. Having reissued several essential lost works from the outfit last year, most notably the proto-Sandwell sound of "Highway Dark Veins", Veronica Vasicka delivers another two tracks from the vault. Stylistically mirroring that previous two track release the title track is an equally brilliant synth-techno beast which could easily pass for a Function track today, while B-side "Calling Somewhere" sounds like a cold wave version of proto-halfstep. Needless to say, the fact that these tracks are 22 years old literally left us speechless.

Magic Words Command
Review: The combination of Richard H. Kirk and Minimal Wave was never going to disappoint, but the four tracks on this Never Lose Your Shadow 12" are still very special! Digging deep through the archives of the Cabaret Voltaire front man, Veronica Vasicka presents a quartet of solo recordings that have never been committed to wax before. The highlight is undoubtedly the A Side title track, a lolloping ten minute track of hypnotic industrial action made all the more memorable by Kirk's acerbic intonations about "the blind leading the blind". If you've caught a Vasicka DJ set recently you will have probably lost yourself to these ten minutes. On the flip are three tracks recorded in the same late '70s period which are distinctly more experimental in tone and just as vital.

Review: On the basis of this Minimal Wave release, the hugely prolific output of German artist Felix Kubin and his undoubted eccentric nature is swamped by his musical precocity. Teenage Tapes collates some twelve tracks Kubin recorded in his adolescent years after acquiring a Korg MS-20 synthesizer as an 11 year old, with six of them exclusive to this release. Regular collectors of Minimal Wave output will recognise Kubin - a self styled messenger of exploding lungs who rules the "syndicate of counter-noise" - from "Japan, Japan" his contribution to the Minimal Wave Tapes Vol 2 compilation released earlier this year, and that short burst of furiously uptempo, whacked out electro punk opens this compilation, setting the tone for what to expect. As with most Minimal Wave releases, the way Kubin's nascent musical ideas are indelibly tied to the musical motifs of contemporary electronic sounds proves to be enduringly fascinating, more so given how young he was when these recordings were made!

Review: Minimal Wave dig into the archives of Gallic synth savant Philippe Laurent, presenting a selection of tracks recorded between the late seventies and late eighties. This is the first time all but the most ardent fans of synth wave music will have heard some of the nine tracks here, as they range between previously unreleased or culled from obscure tape only compilations. There's an approach to rhythm, depth and structure here that is startling, given the technology used, with a bounce throughout that's familiar to the early Detroit electro artists. Pressed up on heavyweight 180gram translucent red vinyl that is housed in a deluxe sleeve, this release will prove to be every bit as essential as previous Minimal Wave output for fans of the synth sound.

Review: Minimal Wave returns to their Belgian fancy, Linear Movement, for an all new trawl through their archive called The Linear Way. Two of the six tracks featured, "The Linear Way" and "Don't Try To Trick Me", have been lifted from the band's rare 1983 Pulse Music tape whilst the remainder are Linear Movement songs that have seen official release before. Of the latter, the quirky quasi techno of "Inside Outside" - potentially the best tune on here - and the mechanical, slow-burning lo-fi electro of "I Might As Well Be There" stand out in particular. But The Linear Way sounds great as a whole. Highly recommended.

Linear Movement is mastermind Peter Bonne (A Split-Second, Twilight Ritual, Autumn) joined by Peter Koutstaal, and Lieve Van Steerteghem on vocals for several tracks. Some tracks appear on the exquisite Pulse Music cassette while the rest are previously unreleased. Linear Movement was featured on V/A The Lost Tapes compilation LP with their highly acclaimed The Game, described as an "unstoppable pop song". Linear Movement have been called "a more primitive, cold wave Visage", and have been compared to the Human League. Peter differentiated LM from his other projects TR and Aut by the distinct sound of the compositions: they were poppier.

Martin is mainly known for his Oppenheimer Analysis (Minimal Wave) and Analysis (Survival Records) projects, yet through the years he recorded over two dozen tracks on his own, most of which never saw the light of day. The four selected tracks were recorded between 1980 and 1984 in his own "Feedback Studios" in Battersea , London. Martin Lloyd delivers vocals via the vocoder and carefully layers synth melodies which range from upbeat and danceable, to what could be the soundtrack to a 1981 post-apocalyptic science fiction film. The record is pressed on white vinyl with a heavy black jacket (spot gloss) and is limited to 999 hand-numbered copies.

Review: Minimal Wave's latest must-have release shines a light on the largely forgotten work of early '80s Belgian misfits The Misz, a duo who recorded and released off-kilter new-wave pop on limited edition cassettes via a variety of obscure labels. Their trademark sound - created using cheap and little-known synthesizers, lo-fi drum machines, effects-laden guitars and stylish vocals - remains hugely alluring, with this ten-track collection offering a superb introduction to their work. We're particularly enjoying the effects-laden trip that is "It Ain't All Garbage", the doomy shuffle of "A La Recherche De BL" and the alien synths and weirdo vocals of "Zastava Home", but there are plenty of other tracks across the LP worthy of lavish praise.

Moderne was a minimal/synthpop band formed in Tours, France in 1979. After releasing two albums & two singles between 1980-1981, nothing was heard from Moderne aside from 'Switch on Bach' (released on the compilation So Young But So Cold). Moderne remains notoriously hidden in the past, and their albums and singles have become collectors items. The albums were mixed by Joschko Rudas and Henning Schmitz at Studio Rudas Dusseldorf, the same studio Kraftwerk used for Man Machine (1978). The production is exceptional. Review: Pavillon 7b were a band from Dijon, France and were prominent in the cold wave scene in Europe during the 80's. "Dark Life", their first album to be released in 20 years, includes tracks from their first two cassettes recorded during the early years (1984-1985). They have appeared on numerous compilations, as well as releasing a full length LP in 1987. Wonderful, and simple dark, cold wave with vocals in French and English. Limited to 500 numbered copies, 180 gram vinyl, with very special embroidered patch insert.

Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing much about Plugpoint Music's sole album, Last Chance. It was recorded by German artist Reiner Ossmann in his home studio way back in 1987 and was subsequently released via a private press run of just 200 copies. It is, then, a genuinely little-known and overlooked gem that has been rescued from obscurity via the mighty Minimal Wave label. If you enjoy the more stripped-back and eccentric end of the new wave and cold wave spectrum, we'd definitely recommend it. Ossmann's synthesizer and drum machine arrangements are expertly minimalistic and alien-sounding, with gurgling melodies and spaced-out chords mingling with his own heavily accented vocals over the sparsest of beats. An ultra-rare gem that's well worth your time and money.

New Purpose (extended version)
Protection Now! (demo)

Review: After last year's brooding 7", Regis and Silent Servant return to Minimal Wave with their Sandra Electronics project and to be honest, we couldn't be more excited. Hearing what these two techno leviathans are up to in their more industrial modes is both a privilege and a pleasure to the ear-drums. Exploring the genre-less corners of coldwave and post-punk, this six-track EP is probably one if this year's hottest releases so far. From the crisp, metallic drum twists of "It Slipped Her Mind" to the almost Middle-Eastern sounds of "Protection Now!", and the noisy, Gristle-like bounce of "Publicity (demo)", it's a total winner in our books. You also get a live version of "Want Need", where the duo culminate into total insanity and tie things off in fine style. Are these two going to concentrate on this kind of stuff form now one? We hope so, this is it. Highly recommended.

Her Needs (1988)
Her Needs (1999)
Review: Primitive Brumbeat is the order of the day from Minimal Wave on this weighty seven inch presentation of early Karl O'Connor material. Recorded under the Sandra Plays Electronics banner, Her Needs presents two versions of the same track from different periods of O'Connor's musical development and provide further enticing historical evidence of one of techno's most illuminating figureheads. Those who indulged in the brilliant White Savage Dance 12" from Downwards from late 2011 will be all over the DIY odes to O'Connor's childhood heroes such as DAF and Liaisons Dangereuses here. The 1999 version in particular which originates from the same recording sessions that ended in the seminal Diversion Group release A Man Has Responsibilities.

Shake Your Molecules (original)
Shake Your Molecules (dub)
Too Many People (alt version)
Art Dimension (alt version)
Review: Nothing but gorgeousness seems to characterise the work of the Minimal Wave imprint over the recent years. It's a label that is both unpredictable and continuously elegant in its choice of reissues. This time, it's a wonderful unearthing of Soma Holidays cult-hit, Shake Your Molecules. The Franco-American duo was part of Brooklyn's clique of artists throughout the 1980's, and although their sound is firmly representative of that era, the tracks are still ridiculously fresh and seductive both in their melodies and vocals. The title track is a sort of synth-pop tune gone wrong in a good way, where drugged-up lyrics meets morphing synths and metallic drum machines, whereas the Dub cut could easily be played in most techno DJ sets these days. On the B-side, we have the charming, atmospheric glow of "Too Many People" and "Art Dimension", the top pick in our opinion and one which is screaming to be be remixed into a contemporary house tune.

Review: Described as "one-man, new wave synth" bands, these projects were a part of the emerging new music scene in Belgium in the early 80's. Other related bands from that era include: Absolute Body Control, The Klinik, OB Minimax, Quality-T and Vita Noctis. All three tracks were created spontaneously; resulting in beautiful, minimal, analog synth recordings.

Review: Minimal Wave are proud to present a 12" EP by UK band, Sudeten Creche. The EP includes their cult song Are Kisses Out Of Fashion? (originally released on the 1982 compilation EP Europe in the Year Zero), as well as an unreleased version of Kindergarten (the original version was released on Illuminated Records in 1983). The songs are from their original tape reels, and they're pure electropop bliss.

Review: Plastic Love sees Minimal Wave further document the prolific Sympathy Nervous output of Japanese artist Yosihumi Niinuma following last year's Automaticism LP. Though Niinuma's recordings span some three decades from the 1970s onwards, the focus of this collection narrows to the period between 1979 and 1980 and consists entirely of tracks that never made it beyond his studio. Plastic Love essentially demonstrates how hard it is to pin down Sympathy Nervous stylistically, with the nine tracks perfectly capturing Niinuma's stylistic diversity as well as his inherent eccentricity. Opening track "Khaki Cloud" is a balls out explosion of cascading synth textures, percussion and Lee Scratch Perry style vocal nonsense that seems all the more devilish when followed by the more restrained but equally oddball "Antawa Suguni", proto techno experimentalism at its finest. Niinuma's wife contributes vocals to "Butoubyou No Syounen" an exercise in pure synth pop that's one of the highlights here along with the guttural post punk dub brilliance of "Untitled 1".

Review: The excellent Minimal Wave serves up a long-awaited LP here that features unreleased treasures from the influential UK duo, Vicious Pink, who first met at The Warehouse night-club in Leeds in the late 1970s and went on to reshape synth-pop. They notoriously lent their backing vocals to friends Soft Cell but went on to have success as a duo with avant-garde singles that defied norms and climbed the UK dance charts between 1982 and 1986. Now, Unexpected offers glimpses into their creative process and is packed with pop experiments recorded on the fly, some of which are with Dave Ball of Soft Vell/Grid fame. Limited to 999 copies on Coke bottle clear vinyl, this release is a true collector's gem that includes an exclusive postcard.
