Review: Assiko Golden Band de Grand Yoff is a drum collective from Dental that has been, nay all accounts, tearing up their local nightlife scene in Dakar. An array of 14 different percussive instruments plus horns, winds, balafon and accordion all back the Senegalese poet Djiby Ly as they coo up spiritually infused polyrhythms, the energy of Fela's orchestras and the grooves of Tony Allen. Though steeped in ancient rituals and tradition, there is plenty modern thinking on display here in a collection of vital, exciting music that is very much alive with purpose as well as groove.

Review: The Cosmic Tones Research Trio's All Is Sound is a profound blend of healing music rooted in gospel, blues, and spiritual jazz. Led by alto saxophonist Roman Norfleet, alongside cellist Harlan Silverman and pianist Kennedy Verrett, the trio creates an immersive soundscape perfect for meditation and mindfulness. Each track unfolds with a peaceful, meditative quality, gently building layers of sound through the interplay of sax, cello, piano, flutes and even didgeridoo. The album's melodies are delicate yet rich, reminiscent of the spiritual jazz of Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders. Tracks like 'Creation' and 'Black Rest' invite deep introspection, while 'Peace Prayer' and 'Nada Brahma' echo with a restorative, almost mystical atmosphere. With its slow-building compositions and organic instrumentation, All Is Sound offers a unique, serene listening experience a d a powerful healing force. The trio's commitment to creating purposeful, mindful music shines through, making this a great example of work in the contemporary spiritual jazz genre.

Review: ***Reissued for the first time—DEAD MOON’s first record! Originally released in 1988. Dead Moon were a band that existed outside of the
constraints that time and style usually impose on artists. An authentic mix of psychedelic rock, punk, blues, country, and every other American
music worth a damn. This LP features all time classics such as "Graveyard" ( A 13th Floor Elevators type vibrating psychedelic song), "Don''t Burn
The Fires" and "I Hate The Blues.” Lo-fi as hell. Remastered from the original tapes. We are very proud to make this LP available on vinyl once

Review: We were first alerted to the wonderful musical universe of Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou back in August when her self-titled album was reissued on this label. We learned that Emahoy was an Ethiopian nun known for her piano playing and musical compositions as well as for singing for Haile Selassie. She then became something of a recluse though spent time perfecting her blues. Her music sales have been used to fund orphaned children in Ethiopia. Jerusalem is the first archival release of her music since 2006 when she was introduced to the world.

Review: Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru remains one of 20th century jazz's most likely heroes: an Ethiopian nun whose piano-playing talent was spotted and encouraged by Emperor Haile Salassie, who paid for her to study and record her earliest albums in Germany. This retrospective draws on a handful of rare albums (and even rarer archive recordings) Gebru committed to tape in the 1960s. It provides an excellent introduction to her distinctive style, which mixed Ethiopian and Western musical modes, with nods aplenty to her musical inspiration, the great Erik Satie. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the fresh and breezy 'Mother's Song', the epic and undulating 'Song of the Sea', and the inspired 'Song of Abayi'.

Review: Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru's deeply spiritual music has long remained a hidden gem and this release offers a rare chance to experience her most poignant works. Recorded in churches across Jerusalem, her performances on piano, harmonium and pipe organ transcend genre that blends Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy with the technical sophistication of her classical training. There's a serenity to these pieces, particularly in 'Ave Maria,' where her piano's crystalline chimes fill the sacred spaces, while 'Spring Ode - Meskerem' brings new life to familiar melodies, played through the rich drones of the harmonium. The collection moves from meditative to dramatic, with 'Essay on Mahlet' offering a slow, introspective journey as Emahoy translates the free verse of Orthodox liturgy into a delicate piano composition. The inclusion of 'The Storm' provides a moment of intense contrast, its stormy narrative unfolding through sharp, thunderous piano lines. Emahoy's ability to blend devotional themes with emotional depth is most apparent in 'Via Dolorosa,' where the music mirrors the weight of the stations of the cross with breathtaking gravity. Her music, though niche, stands out for its seamless fusion of Ethiopian spirituality with the grand traditions of Western classical music, feeling entirely distinct in its expression. The recordings, originally made in 1972, show a stark simplicity and restrained power that speaks directly to the soul. It's a rare treasure and an essential contribution to the world of spiritual music.

Review: The first vocal album by beloved Ethiopian nun, composer, and pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, Souvenirs is a profound and deeply moving home collection of cassette recordings made amidst political upheaval and turmoil. These are songs of wisdom, loss, mourning, and exile, sung directly into a boombox and accompanied by Emahoy's unmistakable piano. Though written and recorded while still living at her family's home in Addis Ababa, Emahoy sings of the heartache of leaving her beloved Ethiopia, a reflection on the 1974 revolution and ensuing Red Terror in her homeland, and a presentiment of her future exile in Jerusalem. Rich with the sound of birds outside the window, the creak of the piano bench, the thump of Emahoy's finger on the record button, they create a sense of place, of being near the artist while she records. Emahoy's lyrics, sung in Amharic, are poetic and heavy with the weight of exile; she dreamt of releasing this music to a larger audience before her passing in March of 2023, so in her honour, Mississippi present this album in collaboration with her family now, in what would have been her 100th year.

Review: Reissued in the aftermath of her passing away in 2023, Souvenirs is probably the best-known album by Ethiopian legend Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, whose morphing from nun to composer, pianist and vocalist tracks an exquisitely bleak but powerful history. The first album to feature her own voice, the album was written and recorded at her family home in Addis Ababa, and deals in personal themes of loss, homesickness and transience, reflecting on Emahoy's experiences of the turmoil of the 1976 Red Terror in Ethiopia, in which the provisional Derg military dictatorship violently suppressed the rise of other competing revolutionary militia groups, and in so doing caused mass upheavals and migrations. With lyrics sung in Amharic and overlaid against uniquely mournful DIY instrumentations, Mississippi's CD reissue reminds us of its heart-warmer status, betraying Emahoy's deep familial fidelity and integrity.

Review: There are back stories, and then there's Chess of the Wind. Sheila Gharachedaghi's remarkable movie soundtrack wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the fact the movie itself - a 1976, pre-revolutionary Iranian queer-gothic-class-horror masterpiece - had been banned in its homeland and presumed lost forever, until a copy turned up in an antique shop. That was 2014, and six years later it was re-released, having benefited from restoration by the Martin Scorsese Film Foundation. A remarkable insight not just into a society long since lost, but its pitfalls and problems, to accompany this Gharachedaghi combines classical Persian instrumentation and atonal dissonance, traditional melodies and experimental moods for a score that's just as much of a landmark.

Review: Mississippi Records' obsession with underground Greek music continues with ten ultra-rare recordings of heartbreak and vice from rembetiko legend Giorgos Katsaros. Katsaros, who by some accounts lived to be over 100 years old, carried the old songs of Greece to the Diaspora in the United States, bridging centuries of music in one storied lifetime. Born in 1901 on the Greek island of Amorgos, Katsaros was enchanted with the songs he picked up as a kid in the streets of Piraeus and Athens. Encouraged by his grandfather, an amateur singer, Katsaros developed a style that mirrored his upbringing - centuries-old Asia Minor songs, island rhythms of his homeland, well-known Athenian songs of the time, and anonymous rebetiko songs. This new decalogue brings a well-selected chronology - sieved from a wider, but still minimal, corpus of just 64 recordings made over the course of Katsaros' life - and melts it all down in a single crucible. The sense of hypnotic intrigue is central to Katsaros' music, and is made obvious as soon as one drops the needle on the record: what starts out from simple instrumentation - mere elegiac voice, and steel-string guitar - ends on a reverent, lulling high (the mechanism behind which effect, we have no idea).

Review: The legendary Giorgos Katsaros, a revered figure in Greek rembetiko, is celebrated in this remarkable collection of ten ultra-rare tracks. Known for his steel-string guitar and powerful voice, Katsaros shaped Greek underground music, transporting it across the Atlantic to the Greek Diaspora in the US. His songs reflect the soul of a bygone era, blending rhythms from Asia Minor, Greek islands, and the streets of Piraeus and Athens. Born in 1901 on Amorgos, Katsaros was deeply influenced by his grandfather and the street music he absorbed as a young boy. His sound captures the spirit of the manges, the rebellious figures of early 20th-century Greece who found solace in wine, hashish, and music. This collection, remastered from 64 surviving recordings, revives the rich, melancholic beauty of his guitar and voice, carrying listeners into the smoke-filled taverns where his music thrived. These newly remastered recordings, pressed on red vinyl, breathe fresh life into Katsaros' timeless work, ensuring his legacy endures. With lyrics translated by Tony Klein and newly unearthed research by Greek historians Stavros Kourousis and Konstantinos Kopanitsanos, this release provides a comprehensive look at the myth and music of a Greek icon. The LP comes complete with extensive liner notes, adding depth to this already essential release.

Review: Futreu cult classic alert: Wilurarrakutu is the captivating debut album from Papunya-based young Aboriginal Australian artist Keanu Nelson in which he blends intimate storytelling with minimalist, DIY electronic soundscapes. Sung in both Papunya Luritja and English, the eight tracks draw from Nelson's personal notebooks and feature Casio keyboards, drum machines, and subtle synths all with a made--on-the-kitchen-table vine. Created in collaboration with Sydney producer Yuta Matsumura, who Nelson met during a chance visit, the album reflects influences from Papunya's gospel traditions and reggae beats shared in the remote community. Nelson's lyrics touch on family, heritage, and culture, balancing joy and melancholy meaning that Wilurarrakutu offers a tender sonic reflection of home and identity.

Review: Keanu Nelson is a young Aboriginal Australian artist from the remote community of Papunya, northwest of Alice Springs. He paints in the Western Desert movement style and, on this album, sings poems from his notebook over minimalist Casio beats programmed by Yuta Matsumura. His debut album, which came on the Altered States label, now gets re-issued on a larger scale. Inspired by local gospel and reggae beats, Keanu's songs explore family, home, and loss and he sings in a blend of both Papunya Luritja and English. The result is a haunting, original sound that is part Francis Bebey, part Suicide, and one that feels both familiar and groundbreaking.

Review: Estonian contemporary classical musician Arvo Part is by now perhaps best known for his devastating opus 'Spiegel Im Spiegel'. But to focus solely on this ascendant piece would be to do a disservice to the best of his works, of which there is not only much, but also a personally idiosyncratic method that suggests genius. Mississippi Records expand on this elusive and fascinating musician's oeuvre, helping disseminate a new collection of renditions by Boston-based chamber orchestra A Far Cry. Part's music is ternary, and he is responsible for the use of the term "tintinnabular" in music theory: a far cry from the bell-related meaning of the term, tintinnabular music refers to a specific compositional style in which one hand arpeggiates the tonic triad (plays notes 1, 3 and 5), while the other hand ascends the remaining notes of the scale in stepwise motion. Decidedly minimalist, then, the versions of 'Silentium' and 'Vater Unser' in particular render Part's technique in full naked technicolour, with their thin strings building to gobsmacking, tearjerking heights. No wonder that, so famously, of his sparse compositions, Part had this to say: "I have nothing to say... It is dangerous to say anything, because if I've said it already in words there might be nothing left for my music."

Review: Arvo Part stands as one of the most influential composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, pioneering the "holy minimalism" movement with a sound that is both stark and transcendent. Emerging from Soviet-occupied Estonia, his early experiments in serialism gave way to a deeply spiritual style influenced by Gregorian chant and Orthodox choral traditions. His self-developed tintinnabuli technique, marked by bell-like harmonies and spacious phrasing, has made his work beloved across classical and contemporary circles. This collection highlights Part's signature meditative depth. At its core is a never-before-released version of 'Silentium,' performed by Boston's A Far Cry at an unhurried pace, stretching the piece's time-suspending qualities to their limit. The album also includes the warm yet solemn 'Vater Unser,' the introspective piano piece 'Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka,' and a stirring interpretation of 'Fratres for Strings and Percussion.' Each piece reflects Part's belief in music as a form of prayeriunspoken, yet profoundly resonant.

Review: If you're familiar with Dead Moon, then the name Pierced Arrows might ring a bell. For the uninitiated, Dead Moon spent 20 years creating raw, unpolished garage-punk, cultivating a dedicated cult following. After disbanding, Fred Cole and Toody didn't stay silent for long, teaming up with drummer Kelly Halliburton to form Pierced Arrows. Pierced Arrows maintain the gritty essence of their predecessors, crafting music that perfectly complements a night of beer and bar brawls. This debut record from Pierced Arrows is all about authenticity, with no frills or studio gimmicks. Tracks like Frankenstein' and 'Caroline' evoke a bygone era, blending 60s psych-rock with early punk's raw energy. 'In My Brain' delivers heavy riffs and introspective lyrics, appealing to metal fans. Their take on Neil Young's 'Mr. Soul' adds a rough edge to the classic. The standout track, 'Up on a Cloud,' combines Irish and rock influences for a potent mix. This straightforward collection resonates with both long-time Dead Moon fans and newcomers alike. Fred and Toody Cole, alongside Kelly Halliburton, bring a harder edge to Pierced Arrows, proving that age hasn't softened their sound. Originally released in 2008, this legendary album is now reissued on vinyl, making it accessible once again. Pierced Arrows debut is a killer record that embodies a rare, raw authenticity in today's music scene.

Review: Rail Band are one of the most legendary bands in Malian musical history, and like all great legends their greatest moment was fleeting. This incredibly heavy, soulful and hard-grooving record was released in 1973, when the official orchestra of the Malian State Railway decided to enter the studio and lay down their potent blend of Western funk and surf, Mande tradition and Afro-Cuban percussion. The band was led by trumpet and sax player Tidiani Kone and Djelimady Tounkara on guitar, but in the iteration captured on this album they also featured future stars Salif Keita and Mory Kante on vocals. Shortly after, Keita and Kante eloped to embark on hugely successful solo careers, but for a brief moment in 1973 one of the greatest African guitar bands of all time created a perfect storm of West African storytelling and smoking hot grooves.

Review: "The message was clear: this was not necessarily music for dancing - even though the rhythms were compelling enough. This was music for the thinkers." When it came to the music of Celestine Ukwu, from where was this message communicated? In his case, it was the coalescing of his fashion sense and performance style, which combined unorthodox dress for highlife musicians - turtlenecks and drab coats - with a polyrhythm-focused, less intense highlife sound. With his bands, most notably The Philosophers National, Ukwu pioneered a more pensive and slow-burning version of the West African style, earning his place in musical history and this compilation of his greatest works.

Review: Yo La Tengo release their understated, lonesome score to Kelly Reichardt's modern film classic 'Old Joy' (2006), a film dealing in lifestyle differences, drifting and reconciled friendship and the passage of time among other themes, Yo La Tengo's reflective soundtrack spans just six tracks and echoes Van Morrison in its full and embellished use of repetition, pockmarked by a slid-guitar, major-third-happy melancholia. Recorded in a single afternoon at Yo La Tengo's studio in Hoboken, this is a drifting, improvisatory journey, born out of years-long friendship between the band and the film's director.

Review: The film score to Kelly Reichardt's understated modern buddy movie classic, Old Joy, was composed by Yo La Tengo; one of the band's many soundtrack works, in addition to Shortbus, Junebug and Game 6, the Old Joy soundtrack was born of a years-long friendship held between the director and members of the band. Apt, since the film itself concerns the innate strength of amicable male bonds, maintained for years, even decades. This is also the most pensive and ruminative of all of Yo La Tengo's soundtracks, coming marked by montaging, repetitious guitar licks and pedal tones; excursive feels all round, matching the film's sombre and contrite climax. Now reissued for the first time on vinyl.
