Irrational Fear Of Failure EP
Cat: MORD 102. Rel: 08 Feb 24

Techno
Irrational Fear Of Failure (5:19)
Danger Or Threat (5:20)
Confused (5:09)
Unprincipled (5:06)
Review: Portuguese techno mainstay Lewis Fautzi is in some form of late - it was only in September that he dropped his fantastic Manner of Death album on Faut, then he was back with more in 12" form on Polegroup in November and already he is now out of the blocks in 2024 with this impactful new four-tracker. His brand of tech tends to be dark and heavy, with apocalyptic abstractions and lo-fi synth, echoing hits and dub undercurrents all making for engrossing grooves full of drama and tension. Even the titles help to convey that message so drop any of these in the club and prepare for a brilliant meltdown.

Review: Quelza dropped a superb double pack in the form of their Les Malicieuses EP on More and now comes back with more deep techno brilliance. This is another bumper eight tack offering of well-crafted rhythms and deft atmospheres. 'And Suddenly, I Was Reborn' is an icy and unsettling opener with slithering synths and minimal drum sounds then 'La Rive' is quick, slick and ghostly in its vibes. There are also hi-fidelity and dubby cuts like 'Souviens Toi D'Oublier' gorgeously hypnotic pieces like 'He Didn't Say A Word' which float in space and rock back on forth on heady loops. An artful, impactful selection from Quelza.

How Much Do You Know EP

Techno
Pockets Full Of Lighters (5:58)
Zero Seconds Ago (5:18)
One-armed Leg (7:35)
Talking Drum (5:14)
Review: Prolific Ukrainian producer Stanislav Tolkachev returns this week with a new one for Rotterdam's MORD imprint. The How Much Do You Know EP features once again his idiosyncratic style of techno music: whether it's the multi-layered and widescreen arrangement of opening cut 'Pockets Full Of Lighters' which is truly indicative of his majestic style on the A-side, followed by the pounding, peak-time minimal assault of 'Zero Seconds Ago'. On the second side, Tolkachev presents more off-kilter offerings like on the experimental beats of 'One-Armed Leg' or the expansive electro of 'Talking Drum'. Tolkachev continues to prove himself as one of the most innovative producers in modern techno music with this release.

Review: This quadruple-vinyl extravaganza gathers together parts 30 to 33 in Rotterdam imprint Mord's Herdersmat series, which has been offering up intense, lo-fi and mind-bending takes on industrial techno since 2015. From track one - a buzzing and stomping effort from SHXCXCHCXSH - it's full-throttle almost all the way, with the compilation's warehouse-ready highlights including Temudo & Ribe's wonky, pitch-black 'Rite', the panicked, paranoid intensity of Razbibriga's 'Cicada', the arpeggio-driven mind-melt of Kaiser's 'And Yet Again', and the almost unfeasibly lo-fi fusion of Isolee-esque electronic motifs and distorted drums that is 'Confusion' by Anthony Doria. No-holds-barred industrial techno for those who seek darkness rather than light.

Techno
Privazione Individuale (6:45)
Sintesi (6:24)
Entropia Variabile (6:51)
Moto Ondulatorio (6:19)
Review: 2023 marks a decade since Bas Mooy launched Mord, an outlet for forthright, heavyweight techno of the type that's now all the rage but was once frowned on but all but those who followed the style. We'll have to wait and see what they have - if anything - in store in way of celebration, but first Mooy has decided to offer up this collaborative EP from Dynamic Reflection regulars Viels and Pyramidal Decode. They begin with the dark, buzzing, atmospheric intensity of the Donatto Dozzy-esqye 'Privazione Individuale', before opting to pepper a more minimalistic techno groove with leaping modular pulses on 'Sintesi'. 'Entropia Variable' is a dense, locked-in chunk of noise-smothered industrial techno, while 'Moto Ondulatorio' is a surging slab of peak-time energy peppered with mind-mangling modular motifs and razor-sharp electronic riffs.
