New York's Movin'
Cat: OPCMXXX 001. Rel: 24 Jan 18
Disco/Reediciones
  1. I-Robots Reconstruction (take I) (8:40)
  2. I-Robots Reconstruction (take II) (9:17)
Review: Since appearing on Motor City Drum Ensemble's fine Selektors compilation back in 2016, AHZZ's 1981 gem "New York Moving" has become one of the most in-demand disco-funk rarities around. Here, Opilec founder I-Robots (AKA DJ/producer Gianlucca Pandullo) offers his own "reconstructions". Naturally, he doesn't tamper with the basic groove, instead choosing to rearrange the original, emphasizing different aspects of the killer original version on each mix. So, while the A-side "Reconstruction 1" concentrates on the stomping groove and cascading Moog lines, the flipside "Reconstruction 2" version makes more room for an extended saxophone solo and dubs out the backing track impressively. Were he alive today, Larry Levan would definitely approve.

Brother Man: Red Axes & Hiroshi Watanabe Kaito Remixes
Cat: OPCM 12084. Rel: 27 Jun 18
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Brother Man (Red Axes remix) (9:15)
  2. Brother Man (Hiroshi Watanabe Kaito remix) (8:06)
Review: Opilec Music is an Italian eclectic label founded in Turin by Gianluca Pandullo - mainly as a conduit for his beloved I-Robots project. His track from last year "Brother Man" gets a hypnotic makeover by current 'it' Israeli duo Red Axes. Their version gets some proper tunnel vision happening with its swirling gated synths, mellow percussion and liquid basslines beneath Tuscania's sultry vocals. On the flip, veteran Japanse producer Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito delivers another awe-inspiring impression of hi-tech soul with his remix - that is just as evocative and powerful as his previous work for the likes of Transmat and Ibadan.

Glamouflage
Cat: OPCM 12090. Rel: 15 Aug 18
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Glamouflage (take II) (8:48)
  2. Glamouflage (feat Schaltkreis Wassermann) (8:22)
  3. Glamouflage (Kuniyuki Takahashi Jungle remix) (8:50)
  4. Glamouflage (feat Colten Decker - Gary Martin Teknotika remix) (7:03)
Review: I Robots first unveiled the original version of "Glamouflage", a heavily percussive, occasionally tribal disco roller built around layered drums, psychedelic guitars and a rubbery bass guitar motif, back in 2016. Two years on, they've decided to give it a new lease of life via a swathe of fine new interpretations. I Robots handles the first remix himself, serving up a "Take II" version that's arguably even more percussive, stripped back and psychedelic. Our favourite of the new mixes comes from Kuniyuki Takayashi, who turns in a steamy dub disco interpretation smothered in mazy Moog solos and breathy chanted vocals, though Gary Martin's Teknotika rework featuring Colten Decker - a wickedly hypnotic mix of chugging techno rhythms, layered hand percussion and snaking sax solos - is also rather good.
