  2. Tetsuko No Heya (2:56)
Review: Freshfrom offering up brand-new cover versions of 'Toxic' and 'Waterfalls', Inokasira Rangers delve into their back catalogue and offer up another essential reissue. Both tracks were originally released back in 2015 and, like much of their catalogue, put a rocksteady-influenced vintage reggae spin on tracks by other artists. Lead cut 'Hikoukigumo' was the title track from singer-songwriter Yumi Arai's 1973 debut album; in the hands of the Rangers, it becomes a lolloping, Hammond-heavy shuffler full of toasty bass, clipped guitar riffs, rock-solid drums and melodic organ solos. Over on the flip they deliver their interpretation of 'Tetsu no Heya', the Taku Izumi-penned theme tune for a record-breaking Japanese chat show of the same name. We're not familiar with the original, but the trio's cheery and melodic reggae interpretation is certainly entertaining.

  1. Whatever (3:45)
  2. The World On Pause (3:31)
Review: Keiichi Sokabe and the vast Inokasira Rangers collective love to serve up their own covers of the biggest tunes from a range of genres. They've done 'Born Slippy,' 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Autobahn' amongst many others before now and this time out they add their own reggae spin to Oasis's classic 'Whatever.' In their hands, it has noodling melodies and a fat rhythm section that trundles along with a sense of playfulness. On the flip is the more upbeat 'The World On Pause.' It's driven by some clacking wooden hits and warm chords, with organ stabs and busy vocals all getting you up on your toes.

Funk
  1. Sex Machine (3:53)
  2. Nagoriyuki (3:40)
Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.
