  6. Ginger Baker & Tony Allen Drum Solo (part 2 - live At Berlin Jazz Festival, 1978)
Review: Half a century ago, legendary rhythm and blues drummer Ginger Baker (Cream, the Graham Bond Organisation etc) moved to Nigeria to work with Fela Kuti and his dextrous drummer, Tony Allen. The resultant recordings, which featured Kuti, Baker, Allen and the rest of the Africa 70 ensemble, were released on the brilliant Live With Ginger Baker LP in 1972, which here gets a deserved, expansive reissue. What you get this time around is the original album - a freewheeling, ultra-percussive Afrobeat masterpiece, full of duelling drum solos, righteous horns and killer grooves - plus a second slab of wax. One side of that is etched, with the over featuring recordings of an infamous drum battle between Allen and Baker that's extraordinarily heavy, sweaty and on-point. In a word: essential!

Review: Afrobeat legend, cult bandleader and multi-instrumentalist Fela Kuti recorded his Open & Close album in Lagos in 1971. Originally released on the Nigerian His Master's Voice imprint, it now gets a full reissue on Partisan. It consists of only three track, and once again finds Feld riding his own grooves off into the sunset. There are twists and turns along the way and of course some fantastic horn work to compliment the sounds, but never do you grow detach from that underlying pulse. This might not be as politically or socially charged as other LPs from Fela, but musically it is right on point.

Review: There are numerous reasons why you shop cop a copy of this 50th anniversary reissue of Fela Kuti and Africa '70s 1971 album Open & Close, not least the luxurious gatefold packaging (modelled on the gatefold sleeve that accompanied the original Nigerian album release) and a marbled red and orange vinyl pressing. The album itself remains one of the late, great saxophonist and bandleader's greatest albums: a fiery and funky Afrobeat set whose groove-based tracks brilliantly twist and turn and come laden with a variety of expressive solos from the man himself and various members of his vast backing band (including, we should point out, some incredible Tony Allen drum-work). The 15-minute title track in particular is mind-blowing.

  9. The Moon & Mercury (4:48)
Review: Nigel Godrich and Joey Waronker, known to some as members of Atoms For Peace, and Laura Bettinson once again emerge from the studio with something pretty damn special. Collectively making up Ultraista, their latest kicks off with the propellant and wholly groove-driven "Tin King", its lunging bass providing a somewhat unusual background to a hypnotic, send and return vocal section that's pure twisted choral elegance. Sweet yet dirty, for want of better couple of words. From there things take on a more cosmic tone. "Harmony'"'s subtle glittering synths and layered, stepped percussion. "Save It 'Til Later"'s gradual emergence into ethereality. "The Moon & Mercury"'s gentile but emotional harmonisations. A very welcome way for a very welcome return to the release schedule to pan out, "Sister" is infinitely re-playable.
