The World/Invisible Joy
Cat: PH 45008. Rel: 08 Sep 16
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. The World (4:23)
  2. Invisible Joy (2:42)
Review: Back Pluwatsch, or simply Bajka, is an Indian-born, South-African raised singer with diverse catalogue of music, and an equally compelling set of vocal chords. Her voice was first picked up by London's Jazzman circa 2005, and has travelled across other like like Ubiquity, Raw Tapes, and even on NYC house-techno conglomerate, Ibadan. Philophon feels like a much more natural place for her music to prosper on, a label that's been on our radar since day one, and always comes heavily recommended. "The World" is a true pearl of a song, charged and catapulted into the ether by a deep, raw percussive sway and, of course, Bajka's singular voice. "Invisible Joy" is a similarly deep and tropical, but here the tone is much more jazzy, reminding us of Sun Ra in places. All in all, this is some pretty killer material.

Basa Basa (7")
Cat: PH 45014. Rel: 22 Mar 18
International
  1. Basa Basa (4:08)
  2. Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

Everything You Do You Do For Yourself
Cat: PH 45013. Rel: 07 Dec 17
International
  1. Everything You Do, You Do For Yourself (4:27)
  2. Estre (feat Florence Adooni) (5:02)
Review: Philophon is a Berlin-based label run by Max Weissenfeldt. Part of Philophon is the Tonstudio Bluetenring in Kreuzberg, operated by Benjamin 'Stibbo' Spitzmueller. The label's essential motivation is to support any form of local culture with reason, freedom and ludic drive. North-Ghanaian singer Guy One presents his first international release here. He promises what his name is saying: he is the number one artist of Frafra music, named after his people. "Everything You Do, You Do For Yourself" is a driving Highlife rhythm and his only song having a phrase in English. "Estre" features one of the leading voices of Frafra-Gospel named Florence Adooni. She interweaves perfectly with the horn arrangements by Weissenfeldt and the drummer. Washington's Hailu Mergia, San Francisco's Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids and the legendary Scandinavian producer Jimi Tenor have also released on the label over the last year too.

Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba

Jazz
  1. Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba (part 1) (3:27)
  2. Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba (part 2) (2:45)
Review: Following their surprise reunion and Strut-release album We Be All Africans last year, Idris and The Pyramids return... This time on Max Weissenfeldt's Philophon imprint. Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Gutsy, raw and full of surprises, it's another out-of-body experience from the longstanding jazz troupe.

Vocalize My Luv
Cat: PH 45017. Rel: 24 Jan 19
International
  1. Vocalize My Luv (3:35)
  2. Ki'igba (3:46)
Review: Over the course of his lengthy career, Jimi Tenor has proved to be something of a musical chameleon, variously portraying himself as a lo-fi lounge music lothario, flute-sporting jazzman, Moog-loving electronic adventurer, dub-wise explorer and, most recently, Afrobeat eccentric. On "Vocalize My Luv", he fuses a number of his musical obsessions, by serving up a jaunty and righteous chunk of Ghanaian highlife futurism rich in dancehall-influenced drum machine beats, jammed-out Korg riffs and amiable female vocals. It's ace, and comes with a similarly sterling B-side, "Ki'igba". This shuffling affair sees Tenor reach for his trusty flute and get all jazzy over a dusty and laidback Afrobeat groove.

Quantum Connection

Funk
  1. Quantum Connection (4:32)
  2. My Mind Will Travel (Teen party edit) (4:25)
Review: Finnish vibe artisan Jimi Tenor returns to Max Weissenfeldt's Philophon with two more contemporary dreamboat affairs... "Quantum Connection" springs with a bruk-like energy but chats in fluent jazz via the eastern horns and spiralling hook narrative. "My Mind Will Travel" maintains the spring but with much more of a loungey feel and a molten vocal that flops over the tightly plucked strings with humour and syrupy ease. One of a kind.

  10. My Baby (2:51)
  11. Ki'igba (3:46)
  12. Aulos III (1:59)
Review: Jimi Tenor's fruitful career bares another fine crop here with Aulos, his second album on Philophon, marking another landmark moment. From a maker of dark industrial to the creator of these spring time, organic and nature inspired sounds he has made quite the transition. The multi-instrumentalist and singer is joined by drummers Ekow Alabi Savage from Ghana and Max Weissenfeldt from Germany to aadd extra rhythmic edge to tracks which range from utterly blissed out instrumentals to more strident and kosmische grooves. The sweetness of 'Afroeuropean' is a real highlight, while '128 Cosmic Rock' is thrilling moment of danceable intensity.

  9. We Are The Band Of Enlightenment, Reason & Love (instrumental) (4:08)
Review: A few years ago, West African music obsessive and Philophon label boss Max Weissenfeldt decided to make some roots reggae with his friend and fellow drummer Josie Coppola. Yet this would be no regular reggae, as they'd be working on songs by Ghanaian artist Y-Bayani (real name Yusef Hussain). Since then, the project has developed further with the addition of a second lead singer, Baby Naa (Naomi Addy), a clutch of talented musicians and a Ghanaian choir. The result is this debut album, a wonderfully hazy, sun-kissed shuffle that does a brilliant job in putting a new, Afro-centric spin on Jamaican roots reggae. The riddims are strong, the multi-lingual vocals superb, the musicianship spot on and the production authentically warm and weighty. In other words, it's an unlikely gem.
