Flight 111 (12")
Cat: PFR 111. Rel: 08 Apr 10
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Metro Alpin
  2. Outside Inn
Review: Steve Bug's unshakably individual imprint, Poker Flat reaches its one hundred and eleventh release with a concise yet masterfully produced two tracker from the boss himself. "Flight 111" takes in the usual Steve Bug ethos that less is more, spawning two dark and enveloping house tracks that build from unassuming positions into club killers.

"Metro Alpin" kicks things off in a haunting and moody fashion. It evolves from a firm analog base, but manages to build itself up through a groove of intertwined acid tweaks and smooth phasing chords. The reduced levels are worked so skilfully that it actually gives the track a driving, techy feel. It’s deep, but still driving at the same time much like the sound of early Detroit that Bug clearly has an interest in. The track also has an intensely hypnotic feel, spellbinding the listener in a myriad of tech sounds and cushioned glitch.

On the flip, "Outside Inn"keeps it atmospheric and moody but adds more funk courtesy of a punchy bassline. With more of a raw sound than the A side, the beat is kept simple whilst tense and rising synth lines that intercept one another provide the intricacy that demands the listener’s attention.

Again, Bug has been able to build with subtlety here, making it even more captivating when it drops in the later stages.

Steve Bug is never one to follow trends and hype, and as his ever established career continues to develop we are made sure that this will never change. At a time when percussive house tracks are all the rage, the unique German drops a brace of accomplished reduced yet highly hypnotic, techy tracks, proving not only that Steve Bug is a true individual but also that his production skills are second to none. As he constantly reminds us, "music is about passion, not fashion."

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Coconut Paradise (8:48)
  2. Thick As Mud (7:41)
  3. Pants On Fire (7:57)
Review: This is a typical Steve Bug release and this is what makes it so impressive. Like much of his back catalogue, it effortlessly flits in mood from celebratory to deep before ending up in tripped out mode. The title track sees the Poker Flat boss in typically jaunty mode, with summery keys unfolding over an upbeat tech groove. "Thick As Mud" is much darker and rides a searing bass and tougher drums. Rounding off the release is "Pants on Fire", where Bug draws on his minimal background to deliver a pulsing, acid-soaked affair that is custom-made for after hour usage.

Framework EP (splattered vinyl 12")

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Framework (6:45)
  2. Echelon (6:19)
  3. Dummy (6:08)
  4. Automotive (6:52)
Review: Since first appearing on Poker Flat Recordings back in 2015, Pavel Iudin has become one of the long-serving German label's most reliable artists. It is, though, a while since we've heard from him, with the "Framework EP" marking his return to the storied German imprint after a two-year break. He begins with the warm, fluid and hypnotic title track, where sun-kissed guitar notes and liquid synth chords ride a locked-in tech-house groove, before offering up the chunkier, more bass-heavy throb of "Echelon". He brilliantly doffs a cap to deep and dubby techno on the head-in-the-clouds haziness of "Dummy", while electro-influenced closing cut "Automotive" sounds like an unlikely hook-up between Kraftwerk, Orbital and Rhythm & Sound.

Review: Mr. Jeff Samuel is back on Poker Flat with his new EP "Fire". "Fire" is a snappy and propellant tune with some squeaking synths and a stomping beat.

Review: Anders Trentemoller was the noughties' greatest crossover star. From his humble beginnings releasing sleek tech house on imprints like Naked Music, Audiomatique and of course Berlin's Poker Flat - who released his modern classic The Last Resort in 2006. It gets a much deserved reissue here. Trentemoller went on to form his well received In My Room imprint, and go on to headline festivals and pack out stadiums with his acclaimed live show since. The Danish producer's debut album is actually appearing on vinyl for the first time here on a triple disc gatefold and featuring all 13 songs. The album received fantastic acclaim from both fans and journalists around the world and made it into the top-lists of the month, year and decade - alongside an array of awards for best production or best album.
