Review: Morgane Lhote aka Hologram Teen is back, after that great one a few months back on The Ransom Note, with more low slung nu-disco goodness on London's Polytechnic Youth on the Geometries Insensibles EP. From the bright like neon, slo-mo groove of 'Halogene Menthol' with is breezy disco retro-tinged vibe and airy synthesizers, to the noir-ish slow burning Italo of 'Robot Moses' and closing with the romantic French new wave of 'Amour Fission' - it certainly is all in the name. Lhote was formerly a member of outfits such as Stereolab and The Projects (with Mira Aroyo and Edward Ball).

Review: Polytechnic Youth have pulled out six pieces of experimental electronic brilliance from music veteran Hanno Leichtmann, ho you may better know as Static. These are all new to vinyl after a previous digital only release as part of his 2017 album Offset. The music is minimalist in design but maximal in impact - creepy and haunting soundtracks that place you in abandoned medical facilities or post apocalyptic factory floors. That is achieved through occult synth modulations and slithering rhythms, busted sound design and icy atmospheres that really draw you in deep.

Review: Having emerged from the undergrowth via a swathe of tape releases on Field Hymns, Wayne Longer's (aka Adderall Canyonly) Oxykitten alias has gone on to become a celebrated darling of the contemporary minimal wave scene, and it's not hard to hear why. This release on Polytechnic Youth is Oxykitten's first outing on vinyl, but it originally came out digitally back in 2018. It's highly deserving of a physical edition - not least for the vibrant sleeve which accurately captures the vibe of the music inside. This is technicolour electronics - all day-glo synth lines skipping in unison around the same twee toy town of Longer's imagination. It's subtly quirky to keep things interesting, but primarily harmonious and utterly infectious in its upbeat demeanour - stick this on for a serious dose of synthetic sunshine.

Review: Earlier in the year, analogue synthesizer enthusiast Mark Vorderhaus returned to Polytechnic Youth to deliver his first physical release in three years, a lathe-cut, five-inch single of which only 100 were ever produced. There are thankfully a few more of these around, as Vorderhaus delivers a new recording of his 2017 song 'Lights & Faces, Faces & Lights' in order to raise money for Musicians Without Borders. This take reminded us of late 1970s Kraftwerk, with Vorderhaus adding his own vocoder-enabled vocals to a bubbly electronic backing track rich in ear-catching melodies, sequenced synthesizer sounds and gorgeous electronic flourishes. Over on the flip he sings in both German and English on a high-tempo, alien-sounding number that sounds a little like some of Depeche Mode's earliest records.
