Review: Mille Plateaux, Tetsuya Nakamura's second Arc of Doves album, has long been in demand amongst both ambient and dub techno aficionados. Originally released back in 2010 in limited numbers and subsequently reissued in 2014, Rohs! Records have finally succumbed to pressure and given it a third release, albeit in ultra-limited quantities. Listening for the first time, it's easy to see why the album is held in such high esteem. The ambient tracks are atmospheric, picturesque and enveloping, Nakamura finding a near perfect balance between poignancy and positivity, while the dub techno excursions are far breezier and attractive than the sound design-obsessed fare served up by many within the scene. There are only 100 of these floating around, so grab one while you can.

Review: Since being released on an ultra-limited pressing of 50 CD-Rs back in 2015, Aura Fresh's Beyond The Five Senses album has been changing hands for significant sums online. This has prompted Rohs! Records to give the set the reissue treatment, this time manufacturing more than enough copies to go round. The set remains one of the most impressive dub techno albums of recent times, with Aura Fresh moving from deep space ambience (see superb opener "Beyond The Five Senses") to the Rhythm & Sound headiness of "Eazy", via a string of fine dub techno workouts. Laden with Echospace style surface noise, ocean-deep basslines and trippy, locked-in grooves, it's a set that will entertain and relax you in equal measure.

Review: Berlin-based composer Andrea Burelli's new album Sonic Mystics for Poems (of Life and Death of a Phoenix) is an autobiographical work that draws on the vulnerability of the human existence. It takes the form of 15 pieces written for polyphonic voices, strings, and synthesizers and arrives on super limited, hand-numbered 180 g vinyl. The pieces are all intricately constructed with rich harmonic structures taking inspiration from experimental electronica, classical from both the West and the Middle East, plus folk from across all of Europe. It's a beautiful, confessional and thought-provoking work that makes a devastating impact despite its delicate artistry.

Review: Contemporary classical is a phrase banded about far too loosely in our opinion. It would be easy to try and apply it to Carlos Giustini, for example, but the term only bears relevance in some parts. There are moments on this immersive collection of six tracks that almost feel like chamber music, choral moods without any voices or hint of a choir, for example. And the timbre is such we can almost feel the walls of a symphony hall around us, but the performance would be one of such profound intimacy that setting seems wrong. Forget overtures, then, this is more about ambient refrains that emerge, transcend and reform. Distant noises echo subtly, never fully realising themselves, but creating tangible textures that guide us through each piece - aural breadcrumbs ensuring that when we must, it's still possible to find a way out from under the depths.

Review: If you pay close attention to the global experimental underground, you should already be familiar with David Burraston AKA Noyzelab, a producer, synthesizer maker, sound designer and collaborator whose CV includes joint works with such luminaries as Aphex Twin and former Cabaret Voltaire member Chris Watson. Even so, the Australia-based experimentalist is hardly widely known, though this album on ROHS should help with that. Made up of five impossible-to-describe pieces, CPMSubtree sees Burraston combine creepy, otherworldly ambient sounds with unsettling modular melodies, droning electronics and the kind of foreboding synthesizer weirdness that was once the preserve of EMS Synthi-sporting academic experimentalists and the pioneering BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Review: ROHS! Records' first Dub Affairs compilation won the hearts and minds of many dub techno devotees when it appeared back in 2015. This second volume follows a similar blueprint - think scratchy dub techno, drone-encrusted ambient dub and spacey, intergalactic compositions - and is every bit as essential as its predecessor. Highlights include the fluttering melody lines, ultra-deep sub bass and broken rhythms of Gulls' "Inside Way (Version)", the dreamy, slow and low shuffle of "Caligari's Dub" by Bademah, and the exotic, up-tempo dub-tronica of Ondarituale's vocal number "I Segreti Di Una Generazione Di Mezzo". Best of all, though, is arguably Mystica Tribe's "The Bells", a positively loved-up trip into global dub fusion.
