Main Thing (blue vinyl 7")
Cat: RNT 45005. Rel: 08 Apr 20
Deep House
  1. Main Thing (3:32)
  2. FTF (Freak The Funk) (4:02)
Review: For the latest salvo in their occasional "45" series of seven-inch singles, Brooklyn imprint Razor-N-Tape has turned to Pittsburgh boogie badman and boom-bap hip-hop maker Buscrates (real name Orlando Marshall). A-side "Main Thing" is a revivalist synth-boogie gem that breathes new life into a well-known tribute to "Mary Jane", layering the pitched-down vocal over what sounds like a fresh bed of synth-bass, colourful lead lines and head-nodding drums. Just as good is up-tempo flipside "F.T.F (Freak The Funk)", a vocoder-laden slice of deep electrofunk goodness that hits all the right notes. If you love synth-powered 1980s sounds, you need this in your life.

Devin Dare Edits (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: RNT 051. Rel: 19 May 20
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Clash & Burn (5:22)
  2. KOHO2 (5:26)
  3. Dust (6:18)
  4. Stop (7:23)
Review: Since debuting on Stilove4music in 2012, Brooklyn duo Devin Dare has offered up an irregular smattering of brilliant EPs for the likes of Apron, Misterio and La Mission, including a couple of notable outings alongside London badman Stevie J AKA Funkineven. Here they showcase their scalpel skills via a first outing on local label Razor-N-Tape. They begin by offering an extra-percussive, party-starting revision of a low-slung, turn-of-the-80s deep disco-meets-punk funk affair ("Clash & Burn"), before romping their way through a weighty revision of a high-octane disco stomper ("KOHO2"). Over on side B, "Dust" sees them successfully re-wire a Hammond-heavy chunk of gospel disco-funk, while "Stop" is a pleasingly percussive revision of a soaring disco number.

Review: To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitters. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

On That Day EP (purple vinyl 12")
Cat: RNTR 032. Rel: 16 Jun 20
Funky/Club House
  1. And Others (6:08)
  2. Gonna Do (6:30)
  3. On That Day (6:30)
  4. Fire & Water (5:54)
Review: Nenor hails from Tel-Aviv, a hotspot for quality disco-informed business of all kinds. With past appearances on Mahogani Music, Strictly Rhythm, Whiskey Disco and Quintessentials, there can be no doubting his credentials, and that comes through loud and clear on this new one for Razor N' Tape. "And Others" has an uptempo shuffle and an insanely funky bassline, but it's still deep as you like. "Gonna Do" sports some techy synth stabs and a warm house demeanour, while "On That Day" takes things soulful and searching. "Fire & Water" may be the pick though, tucked away on the B2 but packing some seriously sassy party intent that will get a warm-up set bubbling just right.

Love Is Madness EP (orange vinyl 12")
Cat: RNTR 030. Rel: 15 Jan 20
Deep House
  1. Love Is Madness (The Friends & Lovers dub) (7:17)
  2. I-80 (5:49)
  3. Love Is Madness (Demuja remix) (5:57)
  4. Love Is Madness (feat Simon Black & Leafar) (7:06)
Review: Pontchartrain is Detroit producer Dustin Alexander, an edit specialist and long time collector who aims to make people happy and at home with his music. He certainly does that here with a lush selection of jazz fleck deep house. "Love Is Madness (The Friends & Lovers Dub)" is a smooth grooving number awash with heart swelling chords, while "I-80" is laced with drifting trumpets and new age ambiance that encourages you to dream while you dance. Demuja offers a feel good mix of "Love Is Madness" on the flip and Simon Black & Leafar closes out with old school feelings, irresistible chords and sexy sax lines.
