Review: Brooklyn-based band 79.5 make music right now, rather than being some long-lost acts from the 80s as you might expect from the cover. The group consists of singer, songwriter and composer Kate Mattison, singer and rapper Lola Adanna, drummer Caito Sanchez, bassist Andrew Raposo and sax player and flautist Izaak Mills. Their self-titled album comes on Razor-N-Tape and captures the sound of New York City perfectly with soul and psychedelic melodies that are hard to match. From 70s underground disco to acid jazz to and sweet pop sounds, they draw on it all for this fine concoction of dancefloor gems, which also serves as a protest at the often all too male dominated world of dance music.

Club Level (Eli Escobar remix) (5:02)
Review: RNT welcomes Brooklyn-based band 79.5 to the family with the first single from their forthcoming eponymous LP. Soulful and psychedelic, the haunting melodies of Club Level float above a steady strutting rhythm section, punctuated by moaning baritone saxophone and drenched in washy reverb.

NYC mainstay Eli Escobar crafts a masterful remix that leans into 80s nostalgia, with a soundscape and arrangement nothing short of perfection.

Agua (JKriv & Diogo Strausz dub) (6:07)
Review: This glorious package of remixes of the BaianaSystem band draws together contemporary Brazilian sounds with plenty of modern dance floor flourishes. A?gua is the standout track from their 2018 LP and is a poem to the bands native Bahia people with the legendary Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. It is perfect material to rework for different settings and deep house don Jimpster does that with his fat bottomed, tropical remix then stripped back dub. Brazilian producer Diogo Strausz joins forces with RNT boss JKriv on the flip for a more drawn out and cosmic exploration that pumps up and down on weight bass and that lovely loose jumble of percussion.

Review: Three years after he concluded a run of fine EPs on Delusions of Grandeur, Ben Sun has brought his musically rich, hard-to-pigeonhole fusion of deep house, jazz-funk and nu-disco to Razor N Tape Reserve for the very first time. He's in fine form, too, skipping between deliciously detailed, musically expansive deep house-disco (the spacey synth solos, rubbery bass, cut-glass strings and nods to Metro Area of 'Transmission'), supremely spacey deep house (Jon Sable hook-up 'Sable Son'), tributes to Chicago house-influenced late 1980s deep synth-pop ('Tremors', which sounds like a cross between Dream 2 Science and the Pet Shop Boys more melancholic moments) and squelchy piano house ('Red Light').

Skin (Frank Booker Godfather edit)
Cosmos (Frank Booker Interstellar edit)
Review: Brooklyn label Razor N Tape return with some razor sharp edits from the personal armoury of Frank Booker, Anyone who keeps a left eye on contemporary deep house and disco should be familiar with the Auckland based DJ, producer and co-host of the Hit It & Quit It radio show with Recloose; in fact those that aren't should enrol in disco night classes right now! Those might help you ID the source material on the two edits from Booker here, though the gliding horn heavy funk and distinctive grunts of A Side rework "Skin" should be all the clue you need. On the flip, the loose limbed percussion and rising Philly strings of "Interstellar" provide equal doses of dusty disco delight.

FTF (Freak The Funk) (4:02)
Review: For the latest salvo in their occasional "45" series of seven-inch singles, Brooklyn imprint Razor-N-Tape has turned to Pittsburgh boogie badman and boom-bap hip-hop maker Buscrates (real name Orlando Marshall). A-side "Main Thing" is a revivalist synth-boogie gem that breathes new life into a well-known tribute to "Mary Jane", layering the pitched-down vocal over what sounds like a fresh bed of synth-bass, colourful lead lines and head-nodding drums. Just as good is up-tempo flipside "F.T.F (Freak The Funk)", a vocoder-laden slice of deep electrofunk goodness that hits all the right notes. If you love synth-powered 1980s sounds, you need this in your life.

Review: Brooklyn label Razor N Tape is becoming increasingly well regarded in the edit community, returning here with their tenth release and it's an introduction for newcomer Caserta. Those who scour Soundcloud on the reg will be familiar with Boston-based Caserta who's been throwing up examples of his edit expertise on the orange and white place for the past year. Six tracks deep, the Dynamics EP shows Caserta's style incorporates thumping sample-laden hip-hop grooves, nu disco and bumping old-school house. Furthermore there's a deftness to his touch on cuts such as "Nobody Believed" and "All My Dreams" that sets Caserta apart.

Review: Chicago Nite Owl Chrissy returns with four more floor-focussed revisions that cater for all chapters of the night. Space jam "Discoglide" is the quintessential party starter, all whistles and crowd chants. "Fix It Man" takes tool-swinging Ragtyme into the future while "Every Person" explores the soulful nuances of Double Exposure with gossamer glee. Finally we climax with the bass-slapping super-strutter "Standing Passengers". Review: Clive From Accounts's tunes are as good as his artist alias. For his latest meeting he serve sup a knowing blend of soul, house and disco from across the ages. The relative newcomer impresses from the off with 'Tell Me' which is a steamy vocal over a fulsome house beat. 'Without Your Love' cuts loose on a more heady and cosmic house groove with some gorgeously seductive trumpet lines drifting in and out of ear shot and 'Strictly Business' is fun, cuddly basement grooves for intimate parties. 'Yukon' is a nice fresh breakbeat to up the energy.

Pajama Stomp (6:36)
Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Move Your Body (6:26)
Review: Since 2012, Munich duo COEO has served up a swathe of sample heavy, disco influenced house EPs for such labels as Let's Play House, Toy Tonics, Lagaffe Tales and Razor-N-Tape Reserve. Here they pop up on Razor-N-Tape's main edit label with something different: a quartet of traditional scalpel works from their personal stash. First up is the elastic, horn heavy disco-funk of "Express Lane", which is quickly followed by the skewed Arabic boogie-funk brilliance of "Libyan Sun". Over on side B, "Don't Oho" is a breezy revision of a sun-kissed Afro-disco workout that sounds like it would be capable of causing a commotion in the club, while "Move Your Body" makes merry with a warm, rich and intoxicating early '80s boogie-soul jam of unknown origin.

Review: Razor-N-Tape's Family Affair series makes a welcome return here with a third great instalment. This series is something of an annual end-of-year tradition by now (OK, it's arriving a touch late) and this one hits as hard as any with five tracks taken from the full and standout compilation. It is two great remixes of classic RNT material that gets things underway with Ezel offering a dub of Cor.ece and Bruce Leroys sublime deep hose mix of Guinu, then JKriv's 'Better Than Her' is a fat bottomed bit of deep cut electro funk and elsewhere Kim Anh gets raw and cosmic, and Cody Currie's 'Ghost' is broken beat perfection.

Review: Following the digital release of Cor.ece's debut EP, New York City's Razor N Tape drops the Dance To Keep From Crying 12' with fresh versions and exclusive remixes. On the first side, there's the soulful disco of the title track (extended mix) in collaboration with label co-head JKriv, followed by the acidified spiritual deep house of 'What's The Word' featuring Danny Kane. Infinity I & II (5:33)

Review: On the two releases we've heard to date, Cody Currie has barely put a foot wrong, delivering a string of tracks that brilliantly join the dots between dusty, soul-flecked U.S deep house and hip-hop style sample-based beat jams. For this outing on Razor 'n' Tape Reserve, he applies the same approach to the world of disco and boogie. So, we get the rolling, sun-kissed warmth and gentle filter tweakery of wide-eyed disco house shuffler "Movin' Smoke", the slack-tuned jazz snares, swirling chords and bubbly synthesizer samples of "Infinity I & II" and the swirling, string-drenched orchestral disco-house bounce of "Magic City". Arguably best of all, though, is the more driving "Make Love", where Currie's ability to select and manipulate samples within a bumping deep house framework is best exemplified.

Review: Razor-N-Tape welcomes a London newcomer to their hallowed ranks with this latest 12". Cody Currie is a young, ambitious and already accomplished producer with a mature sounds that belies his age. He shows off a love for dusty deep house and great sampling here with a blissful title track that soon wins you over to his ways. 'Infinity I & II' then layers up jazzy drums and perc with muted horn leads into something warm and steamy. 'Make Love' then gets the hips swinging with louche drums and more cut-up chord and vocal stabs. 'Magic City' closes down with a florid touch.

Review: Londoner Cody Currie is a master of dusty and loveably rough-edged house music that is packed with emotional heat. He serves up another fine EP of just that here on Razor-N-Tape and soon wins you over with the synth-laced house funk of opener 'Evernight' (feat Stee Downs & Mik). 'Yes Bruv' (feat Mik) has a more low-slung and late-night deep house sound and then things take a jazzy and broken beat direction on the lounge vibes of 'Holding On' (feat Marlena Dae). On the flip side is the hip-swinging goodness of Vincenzo's remix of 'Everynight' amongst other timeless sounds.

Penguin Vacation (5:20)
Review: Having got the juices flowing via a split re-edit release with Jacques Renault earlier in the year, Cosmic Kids member Daniel T returns with his first full solo EP of floor-ready reworks. Arguably the most ear catching of the lot is "Trinidad Trouble", a fiendishly percussive, cowbell-laden tropical disco affair blessed with carnival-ready flute flourishes and heavily accented Trinidadian vocals. It sounds like a genuinely sweat-soaked peak-time treat. The hits keep coming elsewhere across the EP, from the "do the Bus-Stop" hustle of Blaxpolitation disco rework "Hit The Streets", which provides a seriously strong opening gambit, to the leisurely, laidback and sumptuous sounds of trumpet-sporting afternoon delight "Penguin Vacation".

The Remedy (Caserta Knows The Cure remix)
The Remedy (Grey Area remix)
Review: Local Talk mainstays Dirtytwo jump ship for this fine release on Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape label, calling in a host of remix talent. The Swedish duo's original of "The Remedy" is the kind of classic '90s tinged house which floats on a cloud of Rhodes keys, New Jersey garage beats and an irresistible female vocal. The "TwoDirty remix" is an altogether sleazier affair, using some funkier bass to retool it for dark basement affairs. Meanwhile Caserta's "Know The Cure remix" employs some particularly fine MK style vocal cut up trickery, weighty piano and tough bassline, while the more free flowing pads and rolling kicks of the Grey Area remix offer perhaps the classiest interpretation of them all, taking things properly deep with its sound design.

Review: Razor-N-Tape welcome in a high grade remix and some original jams from regular contributors Dirtytwo, Sweden's finest contemporary house practitioners. They start with a bang by tackling the evergreen party-starting classic "Get Up (Everybody)" by Byron Stingily, turning the 90s piano house tones to a more modern, jacking tech house style without losing the iconic vocal. Roman Andren pops up for a guest spot on the laid back, jazz-licked "Hageby In Your Eyes," while "Found Love" draws on some familiar vocal tropes for an uplifting, soulful turn. "Ain't The Way" finishes the record off with a choice lick from Foreigner that should get the whole room grinning ear to ear.

Alright (3:29)
Review: Long-standing French funk veteran Vas delivers another deep disco dispatch... "Wizard Funk" lives up to its name with a ballsy, almost dubby stomp and a bassline so juicy it could grow flowers in the desert. "Cream" dims the lights, dips the tempo and slowly strips off every musical garment to reveal a slinky, naked bassline. "The Moment" is subverted repurpose of Inner Life's Salsoul standard "Moment Of My Life" where the groove and backing vocals hog the spotlight. Ending on a sweet, skanky high, Vas brings this show to an end with a beautiful rework of Keith Hudson & Family Man's "I'm Alright". Sporting a new coat of drums and a tripped out synth lines, it's an instant soul soother... And a great way to end an awesomely broad EP.

The opener is 'Freak At Night' with stiff synth stabs and strident drums that get the party pumping while the belting vocal brings the soulful hook. Absolute dynamite. Things are a little more loose on the flip with 'Bit-O-Honey' having more jangling drums and guitar riffs underpinned by a funky bass riff. The vocal is more florid and expressive making this a different but equally impactful sound.

This open opens up with 'Alegria,' a sunny bit of easygoing soul with plenty of orchestral grandeur, big horn energy and the gently lilting vocals of the sisters up top. On the flip is 'Soy Una Nube,' another gorgeous cut this time with more of a 60s folk rock feel thanks to the acoustic guitars and psyched-out percussion. The expressive and often wordless vocals are the centre focus though, and bring real culture to the grooves.

New Zealand collective Flamingo Pier have dropped several well received 12"s on the Soundway Records label and then came good with 2021's self titled full length. They are still all about bringing happy, sunny vibes to a tropical disco template here with the likes of the synth lead 'How 2 Feel' then funky vocal pumper 'Remedy'. Review: Blair French has been laying down all kinds of crucial, disco-inflected grooves for the likes of Claremont 56 and fellow Michigan champ Mr PC's Rocksteady Disco label. Now he lands on the mighty Razor N Tape with deeply dug re-rubs of vintage party material. These aren't common or garden tracks, and they don't get a common or garden treatment. French is ready to go in on the edit and FX, teasing some extra magic out of his secret weapons to get seasoned heads and fresh faced DJs alike in a lather. This is the kind of all-rounder heat you want to make sure you're packing for your next trip out on the ones and twos.

Sunrise (6:17)
Searching (5:38)
Take Flight (5:21)
Review: Italian Patrick Gibin is probably most known to you all for his Black Aroma re-edit series, and is also the resident DJ and artistic director of ROOTS Corte Radisi in Verona, Italy: a seminal and unique club. His penchant for deep cuts and dusty reworks find a fitting home on Brooklyn's Razor N Tape - bringing you the most 'respectful' edits, as always. The evocative and sunkissed soul power of "Sunrise" is stretched over the A side, On the flip, "Searching" provides a handy extension of a certain soulful 70s anthem, and "Take Flights" is a well funky boogie-down joint that's looped for pleasure. Re-edits done proper.

Review: Texan psych-funk fun time outfit Golden Dawn Arkestra get some remix treatment via this double pack from Razor-N-Tape, which leads in with Austin Ato's positively dreamy deep house version of "Children Of The Sun". JKriv takes on "Cosmic Dancer" and makes it into a slick disco-fied workout that adheres to the RNT vibe, while Dicky Trisco takes the track and makes it into a suitably interstellar strutter heavy on the synth lines. Then then the second slab of wax offers up a side each to the original versions, from the Afrobeat-indebted "Children Of The Sun" to the sweet and starry-eyed disco of "Cosmic Dancer".

For Julia Y Luis (4:53)
Review: Man-of-the-moment Felipe Gordon was little more than a Columbian producer with promise when he first appeared on Razor N Tape Reserve back in 2019. It's therefore nice to see him back on the Brooklyn-based imprint two years on. Those who've followed Gordon's career of late will know what to expect - namely heady, musically rich dancefloor workouts that join the dots between deep house, nu-disco and jazz-funk. Opener 'Strings of the Afterline' is pleasingly hazy and dreamy whilst boasting Gordon's usual synth-heavy squelch, while 'The Fall of a Withered Empire' is a rare vocal number with a deep jazz-house feel. Elsewhere, 'Classico' is a bouncy, classic-sounding deep house bounce-along rich in sparkling synth riffs, while 'Julia Y Lewis' is a more languid and laidback chunk of jazz-sampling, funk-fuelled deep house haziness.

Review: The rightly lauded Bogota producer Felipe Gordon has always turned out plenty of high quality music and this year already he has lined up a new instrumental hip-hop album Psychedelic Melancholia. But that's not all because now he arrives on the much loved Razor-N-Tape with his fine Flutes Of Gold EP. The title track is pure joy with shuffling and jazz-infused house grooves topped with lush chords and golden melodies. 'Right Beside Me' has more swing to it and an intriguing vocal sample that is perfect for late night dances. 'Homage To Bossa' has Latin influences and 'Acid Party At Santa Barbara' has prickly 303s twisting and turning through another warm house arrangement.

Review: On wax by dope demand! This Razor-N-Tape 2013 release has been a cult classic for many years but never seen the light of the 12"... until now, thanks to the constant pestering of the Discogs community. All three tracks from the original release are here but it's "Where You Belong" that most are after due to its beautiful spacious beats, sweeping strings and awesome Dionne Warwick vocal texture. The whole release is charmed, though; "Here's To You Mr. Robinson" gets a little smokey on our souls while "Makes Me Feel" should get us all very blissed out. Do not sleep on this one, it won't hang around.

Review: Brazilian musician, songwriter and producer Pedro Guinu debuts on the Razor-N-Tape label with a rich new album that mixes up MPB, samba, Latin disco and international sounds into something brilliantly vibrant and colourful. Vocals embellish each tune, with wriggling basslines and funky percussion all designed to get you dancing. It's a mix of classic Latin influences and contemporary production which makes this record so hot. Echoes of Marcos De Valle and Jorge Ben ring through samba shufflers like 'Portao De Ferro' and immediately appeal as a result.

Review: Gold standard house label Razor-N-Tape looks back to Guinu's modern LP of Brazilian jazz-funk, Palago^, and has some key cuts from it remixed by a selection of assured studio hands here. First up, Jose Marquez reworks the title track into a heavy and hypnotic jam with big percussion. The Faze Action remix of 'Haha Fe' brings some fresh disco sounds and RNT stalwart Diogo Strausz brings big room synth energy and cosmic vocal filters. Last of all, Brazilian Carrot Green brings the 80s boogie brilliance to 'Porao de Ferro.'

Review: The legendary Razor-N-Tape keeps up its always busy release schedule here with a debut offering from Hiatt dB. The San Antonio born artist offers up a sizzling six track mini album that joins the dots between the worlds of funk, house, acid, breaks, disco and boogie. It's a steamy affair, too, with 'When The Night Is Right' soon making its mark and luring you to make some sensuous moves. There is loose limbed funk on the title track, spaced out boogie beats on 'First On The Floor' and low slung slow motion house sleaze on 'Take The Low Roads Home' amongst other gems.

Review: A nice one this week from the ever reliable Razor N Tape out of NYC by label chief J Kriv, on the late night boogie-down vibe of 'Something Else' featuring totally electrifying vocals by Brandon Markell Holmes. Also featured is the low-slung disco heater 'Try Again' featuring Phenomenal Handclap Band and another irresistible vocal courtesy of Nic Hanson on side A. On the flip, it's all about 'Shoulda Been Me' (feat Toribio) which receives a spiritual deep house rework by the one-and-only Alton Miller that's worth the admission alone. Tip!

Review: New York's JKRIV is shaping up to be something of a nu-disco revelation, particularly for his love for all things 'outernational'. In fact, then DJ-producer has released nothing but hip-swinging Latin funk over the last few years, and this RSD 2018 release for Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape, Ferias 77' Reworks, is testament to that. In here, you'll find nothing but sick reinterpretations of classic Brazilian funk and disco, re-moulded to fit the modern ear and, of course, the modern sound-systems. Subtle swings of boogie-filtered disco, deep and sensual house, and a whole load of trippy-hop make this a blazing summer belter, and there's even a slow, Balearic rework of Edu Lobo's infamous "Ponteio".

Review: It has now been three years since Jungle Fire first graced the Razor N Tape Catalogue, and now the Los Angeles latin/Afro/funk/soul 12-piece are back with a five track remix EP. Colombia's Felipe Gordon takes 'Atomico' into evocative, late-night mood music territory, label co-head Jkriv lends some low slung boogie-down feels to "La Kossa", while revered turntablist Nu-Mark delivers a punchy breakbeat take on another remix of "Atomico" and over on the flip band member Patrick Bailey (guitar) gets all spaced-out and echno-laden on his Snake In Da Bronx Dub.

Review: Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape reach out to the Lowlands and coax Hans Peeman into donning his Junktion alias for a new four-track 12" on their Razor-N-Tape Reserve label. Living up to it's dignified and reserved billing, this fifth release on the offshoot finds the Nijmegen-based Peeman laying down some luscious, colourful disco vibes that will brighten up any sun laden afternoon on the terrace. Title track "Hot & Bothered" sets the tone with a summery vibe underpinned by some bumping drums, whilst "I'm wishin'" glides with a subtle house bump and some wonderful vocal touches. "Fling Cleaning" sees Peeman veer off into disco chug territory, whilst "Visions of You" ends the 12" on a soulful note.

Now it makes its way to a 7" vinyl pressing and is backed with his 4am mix of the same tune. This one is a sublime and dubbed out, acid tinged electronic trip that comes with original CD artwork that pays great tribute to original artist Nadim Khan. Another tasteful outing from Razor-N-Tape for this fresh edit.

Review: Razor-N-Tape is back again this week, this time with Kokoro Disco-San, an experienced trio of musicians and producers from Barcelona who have clearly stayed on the pulse of the nu-disco scene in recent years. 'Sunshine' in its original form is an edit of a familiar vocal-led disco groove which is perfect for poolside chilling, but it's the reworks by label chief Jkriv which really bang the party. The bright like neon Beach Burn mix is sure to get the hands in the air, as will the low slung SPF76 mix which is perfect to drop just before sunset.

Donwanchooback
Review: It's been a while since Hamburg producer and selector Sebastian Doring last donned his Lovebirds moniker, three years in fact when he memorably championed the cause of the thuggish Honey Badger for the Tear Drops label. Here he resurfaces on Brooklyn edit emporium Razor-N-Tape for a triplet of funked up tweaks which should service any lagging dancefloor. You'd have to be a sheltered mind not to know the source material for "Funk So Pretty", but there's plenty of trickery and FX at play from Doring here too. The self styled "Beautiful Rework" of "Free" should be filed under mood setter whilst "Donwanchooback" is at the opposite end of the scale, primed for deployment deep into the night.

The Lovetempo EP features chilled-out vocal tracks moving between laidback disco, modern bossa nova, and Sade-esque grown-n-sexy jazz grooves. Hitting notes of both melancholy and positivity, Mattie's plaintiff vocals wind through all four of the original songs, delivering catchy and singable hooks. Yuksek's remix of the most uplifting tune takes it to joyous hands-in-the-air territory. A delightful EP that showcases Mattie's versatility and talent, perfectly crafted for those who enjoy a smooth and soulful vibe.

Review: Super steamy and loved up stuff here from the next Razor-N-Tape 12" as Midnight Magic comes through with the heat. First up is actually a remix of the original 'I Found Love' by Perel which is a gloriously emotive, diva powered disco-house anthem to get hands in the air and dopamine rushing. The original is a little more reserve and cool but still heavy on the good time feels. Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca tweak that only slightly on their more cosmic Erodiscotique remix then Sophie Lloyd remixes with plenty of glossy synth work.
