Reachin'
Reachin' (7")
Cat: RIOT 006. Rel: 10 Jul 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Reachin' (feat Minnie Gardner - Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) (3:33)
  2. Good Good Lovin' (Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) (3:58)
Review: Recently, legendary American dance producer Arthur Baker discovered two tracks in his storage on 1/4" tape recorded in 1979. He asked Hifi Sean (aka Sean Dickson of The Soup Dragons) to rework them - who brought on board Riot Recordings boss Yam Who? and they quickly got to work resurrecting these soulful disco anthems. On the A side, we have the souled-up disco power of "Reachin'" featuring Minnie Gardner's powerful vocals, then get prepared to get down proper to the group vocals and epic brass section in the uplifting "Good Good Lovin'" (Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) all accompanied by Baker's immaculate production style.

Balearic Headspace: Volume 5 Sampler 1
Cat: RIOT 010. Rel: 10 Nov 20
Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Dim Zach - "The Shadow In The Sun" (6:25)
  2. Sophie Lloyd - "Promises" (7:37)
  3. Alena - "Learn To Get By" (Ron Basejam remix) (8:36)
  4. Peter Simmons - "Downtown" (5:58)
Review: Midnight Riot keep on with their Balearic Headspace series, this time hitting Volume 5 Sampler 1 with four more killer cuts. They all take you right to a breezy beach party on the White Isle, with cocktails in hadn't, glistening seas drift in and out and gorgeous people swaying in a hot sun. Dim Zach kicks off with some perfectly horizontal disco grooves and Sophie Lloyd then gets all sentimental and emotional on 'Promises' before things get more party with the acid flecked slow motion deep house groove of 'Learn To Get By' as edited by Ron Basejam and last of all Peter Simmons blisses us out with the romantic 'Downtown.'

Disco Made Me Do It: Sampler 1
Cat: DMMDI 001. Rel: 21 Nov 18
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Dubplate Disco - "Pick Up" (Yam Who edit) (8:35)
  2. Motte - "Darkroom Boogie" (6:20)
Review: The first volume in the Disco Made Me Do It series features a couple of sought-after reworks that we reckon will be everywhere over the festive period. The headline attraction is undoubtedly Yam Who's A-side revision of DJ Koze anthem "Pick Up" (itself a housed-up revision of an old Melba Moore classic), which stretches out the dewy-eyed, string-drenched dancefloor bliss over eight and a half mesmerizing minutes. Motte takes over on the flip with "Darkroom Boogie", a peak-time chugger in which spacey, lo-fi synthesizer melodies and ear catching male and female vocals stretch out over a filter-sporting disco-house groove. While not quite as anthem-like as the A-side, it's a killer rework that's just crying out to be played to packed dancefloors.

Take It To Church
Cat: TITC 001. Rel: 29 Aug 18
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Le Visiteur - "Let The Sunshine" (5:43)
  2. The Soup Dragons - "I'm Free" (Yam Who? & Alan Dixon remix) (7:26)
  3. Jack Tennis - "The Light" (5:59)
  4. Alan Dixon - "Got To Be" (6:19)
Review: This essential EP gathers together some of the highlights from "Take It To Church", a digital-only compilation from the Showfa packed with gospel-fired dancefloor treats. We're particularly enjoying Yam Who? and Alan Dixon's fantastic new rub of The Soup Dragons "I'm Free", which re-casts the track as a righteous, sing-along friendly slab of peak-time gospel disco bliss. Elsewhere, Le Visiteur does a great job extending percussion breaks and slowly ratcheting up energy levels on superb gospel disco re-edit "Let The Sunshine", Alan Dixon's "Got To Be" is a breezy chunk of gospel-house/disco fusion and Jack Tennis' "The Light" is a filter-sporting slab of piano-rich sweetness that should put smiles on plenty of faces before the year is out.

Take It To Church Vol 2
Cat: TITC 002. Rel: 17 Apr 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. The Showfa - "Joy" (8:45)
  2. Yam Who? - "Tomorrow" (4:47)
  3. Stephen King - "It's So Easy" (6:23)
  4. Sweet Julibees - "So Strong" (4:55)
Review: Having recently released the superb sequel to their gospel-fired "Take It To Church" compilation as an epic digital download compilation, the Midnight Riot crew has decided to make some of the best cuts available on wax. The Showfa leads the way with "Joy", a bouncy, peak-time ready re-edit of a lesser-known gospel disco gem, while label boss Yam Who? once again showcases his impeccable musicianship and production skills on the breezy gospel disco stomp of "Tomorrow". Stephen King's "It's So Easy" is a subtly tooled-up take on a Blaxploitation era disco-funk workout, while Sweet Julibees' superb "So Strong" is an impeccable chunk of slap-bass sporting gospel boogie.
