The Uprise
Cat: SIS 031. Rel: 04 Dec 20
Deep House
  1. The Uprise (3:59)
  2. Ghetto Love (7:58)
  3. That Vibe (6:57)
Review: Longtime Detroit badman Patrice Scott ensures Christmas comes early for all lovers of deep house. This EP on his own Sistrum is a real doozy that opens with the slow and purposeful kicks of 'The Uprise,' a real beatdown gem. 'Ghetto Love' is explores more of his usual realm - cavernous musical depths that encourage your mind to wander and get lost in amongst the wispy pads and curious motifs. Last of all, 'That Vibe' brings a very subtle sense of Motor City party, with soulful chords and upbeat kicks embellished with playful Rhodes work. Timeless stuff for sure.

For My People
Cat: SIS 032. Rel: 08 Nov 21
Deep House
  1. For My People (5:04)
  2. Let's Dance (6:38)
  3. Abstract Jazz (4:53)
  4. The Detroit Track (5:04)
Review: The assumption of quality that comes with Patrice Scott records is never let down, and so it goes on this latest refined transmission from his Sistrum label. 'For My People' is a sharp and snappy jam with some of the warmest bass you're likely to hear all year, but it's also smoothed out by mellow keys that provide the starry-eyed magic so intrinsic to Scott's sound. 'Let's Dance' is equally chill, albeit with a nagging swing you won't be able to resist bopping to, whether on the floor or elsewhere in your world. 'Abstract Jazz' offers up something a little more playful as Scott lets the beats come in a little crooked and the keys go darting off into intriguing harmonic configurations, but it's still sophisticated and elegant at its core. 'The Detroit Track' rounds the EP off with another sweet bumper which speaks to Scott's legacy as much as the city he hails from.

Evolve (12")
Cat: SISSOS. Rel: 28 Mar 19
Deep House
  1. Evolve (7:50)
  2. The Music (6:46)
  3. Be About It (6:02)
Review: Last time we heard from Son of Sound man Henry Maldonado, he was serving up seductive deep house grooves in the company of old pal Jus-Ed. Here he serves up his most significant solo release via a solid three-tracker on Patrice Scott's Sistrum label. Maldonado is on a particularly sparkling form on A-side "Evolve", a jazz-flecked, synthesizer-laden affair that sits somewhere between the jazzy brilliance of Kaidi Tatham, the soulful warmth of Kai Alce and the classic smoothness of Ron Trent. Elsewhere, "The Music" is a warm and groovy deep house roller propelled forward by rubbery synth-bass and woozy chords, while "Be About It" is a loopy, thickset fusion of thrusting deep house beats, galactic chords and fizzing jazz-funk flourishes.
