Lovin' Me
Lovin' Me (12")
Cat: SITU 012. Rel: 12 Jul 17

Deep House
Lovin' Me (dubtribe Soundsystem remix) (10:43)
Lovin' Me (Harley & Muscle remix) (7:45)
Lovin' Me (BitterSuite remix) (7:04)
Review: Third time around for BRS's deep house classic "Lovin' Me", which first appeared on Dubtribe Sound System's Imperial Dub imprint way back at the turn of the millennium. Speaking of Dubtribe, the San Francisco duo's brilliant remix - a near perfect fusion of Idjuts style, delay-laden percussion hits, dub disco bass, echoing vocal samples and rich chords - takes pride of place on the A-side of this Situationism reissue. Flip to the B-side to wallow in the slick and sumptuous late night soulfulness of Harley & Muscle's overlooked 2006 rework. Speaking of soul, check the brilliant positivity of Bitasuite's remix (taken from the same '06 Peng reissue), which effortlessly joins the dots between British deep house, modern soul and New Jersey garage. Essential.

In The Bag: 2 Up 2 Down Vol 1 (B-STOCK)
Cat: SITULP 05 (B-STOCK). Rel: 26 Jan 22

Deep House
Javonntte - "Soul People" (5:48)
Laroye - "Best Girlfriends" (6:35)
BRS - "Night To Remember" (5:56)
Mike 'Agent X' Clark - "My Journey Thru Africanism" (6:23)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks, but otherwise in perfect working order***

Here two of Situationism's compilation strands combine on one 12": 2up 2down, which focuses on high-grade deep house, and the In The Bag series of floor-friendly catalogue favourites. There's naturally plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, from the thrillingly off-kilter Afro-house rhythms of Mike Agent X Clark's 'My Journey Thru Africanism', and Javontte's sensational 2021 single 'Soul People', to the liquid jazz-funk/deep house fusion of BRS' fantastic 'A Night To Remember' - all rubbery bass guitar, huggable chords, glistening guitars, fluttering flutes and swinging beats - and the driving, gospel-influenced peak-time brilliance of Laroye's 'Best Girlfriends (Soulful Mix)'. To cite an old cliche, this genuinely is "all killer, no filler".

Barcelona (Psychemagik remix)
Cat: ISM 001. Rel: 02 May 12

Disco/Reediciones
Barcelona
Barcelona Psychemagik
Barcelona Disco
Barcelona Electro
Review: The Situation crew have paid their dues with some of the better disco edits to surface in recent times - a particularly slick and slippery revision of a Quantic standard for Disco Deviance still gets rotation from those in the know. It's nice to see the slightly elusive Five Valley crew return to the art of the twelve inch with something a bit more substantial in form of a new label Situationism and some original material for the debut release. "Barcelona" is presented in three different danceable situations (geddit) with the disco version a particular highlight. The excellent Psychemagik are also called on to remix the track in their own inimitable somewhere between house and disco style.

Beyond Compare (Laroye & Espeut Remixes) (Record Store Day 2020)
Cat: SITU 030RSD. Rel: 10 Nov 20

Funk
Beyond Compare (Laroye & Espeut vocal remix) (5:54)
Beyond Compare (Laroye & Espeut instrumental remix) (5:54)
Review: Thomas Arroyo AKA 'Laroye' is a respected French DJ and producer who here teams up with Andre Espeut for their own take on Beyond Compare. The track has plenty of classic James Brown overtones and makes for an extravagant funk sound with newly recorded vocals that really hit the spot. The synths are bright and contemporary, the jumbled drums loose but driving and the vibes impossible to ignore. This is Situationism's first funk 7" specially crafted for RSD 2020 and it is a standout one.

Beyond Compare (Sean McCabe remixes)
Cat: SITU 027. Rel: 30 Oct 19

Deep House
Beyond Compare (Sean McCabe vocal) (6:55)
Beyond Compare (Sean McCabe instrumental) (6:54)
Beyond Compare (Sean McCabe vocal reprise) (5:50)
Beyond Compare (Sean McCabe Loose dub) (7:42)
Review: West Country heroes Situation have kept it local on their latest EP, which offers up a suite of previously unheard re-rubs of Andre Espeut hook-up "Beyond Compare" by Bristol-based house hero Sean McCabe. The A-side boasts vocal and instrumental interpretations built around warming, mood-enhancing chords, jangly piano riffs, unfussy beats and the kind of slick, ear-catching electronic bassline more associated with Atjazz productions. Over on side B, McCabe offers up a superb "Vocal Reprise" take that sounds a little "fuller" and more energy-packed (thanks in part to his use of more urgent-sounding vocal snippets and grandiose chord sequences), as well as a brilliantly dreamy and locked-in Dub that sounds a little like one of Frankie Knuckles' classic remixes.

Hypnotise (12")

Deep House
Hypnotise (Greg Wilson remix) (9:37)
Hypnotise (4:48)
Hypnotise (Situation remix) (5:06)
Hypnotise (BitterSuite remix) (6:23)
Review: Situation are a collective of DJs, producers, editors and musicians hailing from the The Five Valleys in the UK. After some great releases by Andre Espeut, they offer up some lo-slung/boogie-down vibes abound on the new EP by Sugardaddy: a new collaboration between Tom Findlay (half of Groove Armada) and singer/songwriter Tim Hutton of Hybrid and Way Out West fame. Be captivated by the sexy slo-mo soul vibe of "Hypnotise" which features one super-fly vocal performance by Hutton that has to be heard to be believed. The legendary Greg Wilson leads the remixes with his respectful extended rendition, followed by a hypnotic dub by label bosses Situation and BetterSuite's smooth nu-jazz perspective.

Sugar Daddy - "Hypnotise" (Dr Packer remix) (6:48)
Situation - "You Gotta Move" (feat Andre Espeut - Ashley Beedle remix) (5:38)
Peza - "On It" (6:42)
Katzuma - "All Night" (George Kelly dub) (7:01)
Review: Situationism's latest EP is the audio equivalent of an over-stocked buffet where the curly-cornered sandwiches and mediocre vol-au-vents have been replaced by heaps of high-grade caviar and Michelin-starred amuse-bouche. Or, to put it more simply, a killer collection of dancefloor jams. Our pick of the bunch is probably the throbbing nu-disco/Italo-disco fusion of Peza's acid-fired flipside smoker "On It", though George Kelly's warm, horn-heavy dub of Katzuma's summery disco-funk number "All Night" is almost as good. Plenty will opt to spin Dr Packer's on-point remix of Groove Armada offshoot Sugar Daddy's "Hypnotise", while Ashley Beedle's revision of Situation/Andre Espeut jam "You Gotta Move" is a sweet, jazz-funk fuelled chunk of boogie/electro fusion.
