Review: This Soul Jazz release is a definitive collection of New Orleans funk featuring acknowledged masters of funk (The Meters, Eddie Bo, Professor Longhair) next to some of the earlier artists who shaped the meaning of funk. The album is also filled with many rare, sought after and undiscovered funk tracks. It covers the period from the emergence of New Orleans funk in the early 1960's through to the mid 1970's. The album comes with a 40 page booklet presenting a historical explanation to how and why this music came about, and with lots of information about the people involved.

Deluxe 200 page (24x30cm) flexibound book featuring photographs from New York's house ballroom drag scene between 1989-1992
Notes: This deluxe 200 page 24x30cm flexibound book features hundreds of
stunning photographs from the hidden world of New York's house
ballroom drag scene out of which came 'Voguing', the dance made
famous by Madonna.
Introductory text is by Tim Lawrence, author of two seminal music
books: 'Love Saves The Day: A History Of American Dance Music
Culture, 1970-79' and 'Hold On To Your Dreams: Arthur Russell And
The Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92'.
To coincide with the book, Soul Jazz Records will be releasing an
album of the same name in 2012, featuring Masters At Work, MFSB,
Junior Vasquez, Diana Ross, Armand Van Helden, Loose Joints, First
Choice and many more.
Photographer Chantal Regnault lived in New York between 1989-92,
photographing the scene at its height the dancers Willi Ninja, Jose
and Luis Xtravaganza (who all worked with Madonna) as well as
the legendary 'mothers' of the gay and transgender world - Avis
Pendavis, Peppa LaBeija, Carmen Xtravaganza, Dorian Corey, Paris
Dupree and more.
Voguing came out of the extraordinary house ballroom scene that
emerged in Harlem, New York in the 1980s where men competed
against one another for their dancing skills, the realness of their drag
and their ability to walk on a catwalk runway like a model.
Voguing erupted into the mainstream in 1990 when Madonna's song
'Vogue' became Number One in over 30 countries. The year before
Malcolm McClaren first brought voguing into the mainstream with his
song 'Deep In Vogue' featuring dancer Willi Ninja. In 1990 Jennie
Livingstone's film 'Paris Is Burning' documented the house ballroom
scene in its ascendant, the film a runaway success grossing over
$4,000,000.
As voguing entered into the mainstream the house ballrooms of
Harlem came downtown mixing with the downtown fashion crowd of
Manhattan, before the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic ravaged the
ballroom community.
These wild years of voguing and the house ballroom scene are vividly
captured at its height in hundreds of amazing, previously unpublished
photographs. A visual riot of fashion, gender, polysexuality and
subversive style, 'Voguing And The House Ballroom Scene Of New
York 1989-92' is also a fascinating document on sexuality and race.

Review: Last year's Delta Swamp Rock collection was one of Soul Jazz's best for some time, offering a rare glimpse into the rock, soul, country, funk and blues fusions that trickled out of the Southern US states in the late '60s and early '70s. This follow-up offers more little known highlights from the swamp rock scene, showcasing a thrilling array of little-known artists. In truth, it's the funk and soul-tinged tracks that most resonate (see Bobby Gentry's "Touch 'Em With Love" and Area Code 615's sweaty, banjo-laden "Ruby"), but there are plenty of other killer tunes that take a more sedate approach. Accompanied, as ever, by exhaustive sleeve notes, it's another essential selection from Soul Jazz.

Review: New Orleans: one of jazz music's most spiritual homes, the US city was also a hotbed for raw, groundbreaking funk fusion in the 60s. But as most releases experienced limited distribution, many of its most distinctive funk talents remained solely within the city boundaries and have since become something of a collector's boon. As proved with the previous two volumes, the collectors had every right to seek these out... From the smoky blue grass subtleties of "Little Baby" to the tribal voodoo fusion of "Two Way Poc A Way" via the jazz harmonies and aquatic wah wahs of "Jockey Ride", each one tells a once forgotten tale of raw, spirited grooves, repping New Orleans in a whole way. A must have for all funk aficionados.

252 page hardback book celbrating over 100 years of photography in the Caribbean
Notes: This book celebrates over 100 years of photography in the Caribbean. From calypso kings to Vodou priests, revolutionaries to dictators, colonialism to independence, slave trade to tourist paradise - the many uses and abuses of the Caribbean are vividly captured here.

The image of the Caribbean is as much a creation of the outsider as it is the complex identity of its people, a melting pot of races created out of the participants of the 400 year slave trade - enforced Africans, indigenous Caribbeans and their colonisers - French, Spanish, Dutch, English.

From luscious and beautiful backdrop of tourism and hedonist retreat, to colonial outpost and revolutionary threat within North America's backyard, the complex identity of the Caribbean stands at the intersection of tourism, the detritus of the slave trade, the decline of colonialism and the region's tropicality.

The regions politics span an almost constantly changing path of ideas, radicalism and revolutionaries - from Castro's Cuba and Michael Manley's Jamaica, to the violent right-wing dictatorships of Haiti's Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier and the Dominican Republic's Rafael Trujillo.

The hundreds of fascinating and unique photographs featured here illustrate more than one hundred years of Caribbean history, culture and industry as well as the subsequent diaspora of its people to America, England, Canada and elsewhere.

Introduction by Paul Gilroy. Edited by Stuart Baker.

Paul Gilroy is the author of There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack: The Cultural Politics of Race and Nation (1987), The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness (1993), Black Britain - A Photographic History (2004) amongst others.

Stuart Baker is the editor of a number of photography and design books all of which deal with culture and identity including Punk 45 (with Jon Savage), Dancehall (with Beth Lesser), Kanaval: Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the Streets of Haiti (with Leah Gordon), Voguing (with Chantal Regnault), Bossa Nova, Freedom, Rhythm & Sound (both with Gilles Peterson) and more. He is also the founder of Soul Jazz Records.collection.

  8. Tenderlonious - "Caramel" (8:28)
Review: The grandly titled Sounds Of The Universe: Art + Sound 2012-15 sees the always excellent Soul Jazz compile together the series of limited 12" releases the label has issued over the past three years. The double CD release features both these cuts and a whole host of new productions from some like-minded artists, but this LP sampler houses just those previously released tracks. It's a great move by Soul Jazz too, given how rare the original 12"s were and any self-respecting fan of electronic music should check Art + Sound for the Kassem Mosse, Andres, Heatsick and Tenderlonious cuts in particular. Taking grip of the entire B-side, Mosse's heat treated track "Staat Aus Glas" is 13 minutes long but could easily go one for three times as long without losing any of its charm.

Review: Given the success of Disco Patrick's first collection of "independent disco, modern soul and boogie", it's little surprise to see Soul Jazz ask him to helm a second volume. While there are one or two selections that will be familiar to certified disco diggers - Mad Dog Fire Department's "Cosmic Funk", High Frequency's delicious "Summertime", Dunn Pearson Jnr's expansive "Groove On Down", Paper Dolls' heavyweight "Get On Down" - the vast majority of Disco Patrick's selections are thrillingly obscure or overlooked. Thus, there's a chance to savour the wonky, horn-heavy disco-funk looseness of Skip Jackson & The Natural Experience's "Micro Wave Boogie", the rubbery bass and sweaty Latin percussion of Montego Joe's "Freestyle", and the Afro-disco brilliance of Timmy Thomas' overlooked "Africano".

Review: Last year's Disco (A Fine Selection Of Independent Disco, Modern Soul & Boogie 1978-82) compilation from Soul Jazz offered undeniable proof that few diggers deserve their reputation as much as Dutch discotheque scholar Disco Patrick. Given the reception, it's no surprise to see that the London label have commissioned Patrick to undertake a second assessment of the genre's lesser known gems with the focus here on the years 1976-80. The first of two double LP vinyl samplers to accompany the full CD release finds Pat pulling out gems like the extremely pricey Skip Jackson curio "Micro Wave Boogie" and T.K. Disco treat "Cosmic Funk" by Mad Dog Fire Department. Any current disco spinners will savour Patrick's efforts here.

Review: If you are going to call yourself Disco Patrick its best you know your boogie onions and few could dispute the Dutch digger is among the most knowledgeable of disco scholars on the basis of his Soul Jazz compilation last year. The Disco Patrick armoury of rare gems is well stocked however, and his second selection of Independent Disco Modern Soul & Boogie for Soul Jazz is every bit as good. Across the ten tracks featured on this second of two double vinyl samplers to augment the full CD compilation Patrick lays down some supreme disco treats like the low slung "Africano" by Timmy Thomas, the clap happy antics of "Strut On (Strutt Your Stuff)" from Otis Brown's Grade A and psyched out slinker "I Feel Like Love" by Jazz.

Review: On Boombox 1, the dusty-fingered crate diggers at Soul Jazz Records have turned their attention to the nascent hip-hop scene developing in New York in the late '70s onwards, gathering together independently released disco-rap and electro released between 1979 and '82. Accompanied by a 40-page booklet telling the story of rap's independent pioneers in impressive detail, it's another essential history lesson. You'll naturally find hard-to-find cuts from visionaries including Spoonie Gee (the quick-fire rhymes and low-slung disco breaks of "The New Rap Language"), TJ Swann and Master Jay, plus killer selections from virtually unknown names. Check, for example, the synth-laden boogie-rap of Neil B's "Body Rock", the hip-shakin' disco hustle of Bramsam's "Move Your Body", and the rubbery brilliance of Sweet G's "Boogie Feelin' Rap".

Review: A snapshot of South America's most northern country's richest period - when oil money was rife and the arts were being invested in - Soul Jazz have dug deep to uncover an whole body of work that's remained largely unheard outside of the country. Jazzy, progressive, funky and soulful approaches all tied up with cosmic studio haze and blazed with Latin heat we float from the organic, big band swing of Aldemaro Romero to the electronic boogie groove and slide guitars of Ofrenda Vytas Brenner and back again via pure prog sci-fi of Angel Rada and beyond. A one-of-a-kind collection.

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, Nigeria Soul Fever is apparently Soul Jazz Records' first attempt to document the vibrant West African disco, Afro-funk and boogie scene of the 1970s. As usual, they've done a bang-up job. Noted crate-digging journalist Bill Brewster provides detailed sleeve notes, while the two-disc selection is largely made up of blistering cuts from artists who will be unfamiliar to all but the most studied Afro-disco diggers. The selections from Don Bruce & The Angels, Akin Richards & The Executives and Angela Starr, in particular, are little less than essential, as the continued high prices of their original 12" single releases neatly proves. If you're after a West African disco primer, look no further.

Review: Another work of Soul Jazz curatorial gold: Nigeria Soul Fever is a detailed gatefold trip into one of Nigeria's richest chapters in music. Heavy trade restrictions allowed them to develop their own style without too much US or European influence and the result is an array of national talent who largely remained legends within their own borders. The range is mesmerizing; the sinewy synth and playground vocal Q&A of Benis Cletin's "Get Up & Dance", the ballroom disco soul of Tee Mac's "Living Everyday", the soulful afrofunk folk of Jimmy Sherry's "Nwaeze", the gut-punching power of Arakatula's album finale "Wake Up Africa". This is a treasure trove of unreleased gems that capture a truly unique time.

Review: Soul Jazz Records has investigated the World of New Orleans funk - arguably the original variant of the style - on numerous other occasions - but it's a sound that's always worth revisiting. This edition covers 26 years between 1951 and '77, combining early rhythm and blues workouts from the likes of Gus 'The Groove' Lewis and Dave Bartholomew, with later material from such New Orleans luminaries as Chocolate Milk, Johnny Adams, Eddie Bo and Zilla Mayes (whose torch song "All I Want Is You" provides a fitting conclusion). As usual, Soul Jazz has included a brilliantly comprehensive 44-page booklet, inside which you'll find heaps of historical information, and original photographs sourced from the Ralston Crawford New Orleans Archive.

Review: Back in 2002, Soul Jazz released Hustle, a superb "reggae disco" primer containing killer reggae covers of classic disco hits, mostly recorded and released in the late 1970s. Given that Caribbean disco sounds are now all the range, they've decided to reissue the in-demand collection. Naturally, it contains some stellar material, from Xanadu and Sweet Lady's feminine cover of "Rapper's Delight" and One Bloody's wonderfully positive and laidback cover of William de Vaughan's "Be Thankful For What You've Got", to the dancefloor dynamite that is Risco Connection's brilliant cover of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Throw in Black Harmony's sublime version of Jean Carn's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and you have an essential collection.
