Review: Soundway fans should be more than familiar with Pedro Coquenao's Batida project, with the Lisbon-based Kuduro fusionist dropping a killer self-titled album on the label in 2012. Supplemented by several 12" releases, this has laid down the groundwork of a relationship between Coquenao and Soundway which was always likely to result in further releases, such as the album. Dois is a fourth Batida album overall and find Coquenao at his most confident, retaining the feel of previous albums but widening the stylistic remit, working with guests and utilising more live instrumentation. Afro house, benga, semba are thrown into the mix along with Kuduro, whilst Coquenao slips in the odd Clash sample as well as referencing his heritage with Angolan movies and afro-beat tracks plundered for usage.

Review: Colombian combo Bomba Estereo have been causing quite a stir, particularly in the United States, where their tropical blend of South American instrumentation, folksy vocals and contemporary electronic elements has been greeted with rapturous reviews. Certainly, there's something pleasing about the effortlessly summery nature of their songs, and their willingness to experiment is positively thrilling. Contrast, for example, the Cumbia-goes-rap of the sweaty "Rocas", the next-level Latin pop of "Pure Love" and the lazy shuffle of "Lo Que Tengo Que Decir"; while hugely diverse musically, they make comfortable bedfellows. That's the mark of a band at the top of their game.

Review: Chico Mann seems to be able to turn his hand to almost anything. Having previously impressed as a soulful beatmaker (2007's Manifest Tone Volume One on Kindred Spirits) and afrobeat/afro-Cuban fusionist (2010's Analog Drift), third album Magical Thinking sees him prove his boogie, synth-pop and electrofunk credentials. Predictably, he hits the spot, delivering an authentic mix of vintage synths, boogie guitars, sweaty drum machine rhythms (see the excellent "Long Time Gone") and strong songs ("Comes and Goes", "Same Old Clown"). A string of Dam Funk-ish jams ("Esta Bueno") and Cuban-influenced electrofunk workouts ("Vivito") only adds to the impression than Mann makes music for endless summers. Recommended.

Review: An incandescent sonic spectacle drawing on both members and influences from the stratosphere via Dubai and South-East London, Flamingods have set themselves apart from most else which surrounds them with a rhythmically driven sound informed by both hedonistic fury and wide-eyed abandon. 'Majesty' is the band's most concise and focused effort to date, without losing the intensity and extra-dimensional flourishes by which they've made their name. Kicking their sound into space like a pop-tinged version of Boredoms or an Animal Collective without the dippy self-indulgence, Flamingods here set their stall out as modern technicolour psychonauts to be reckoned with.

Review: Turning heads a couple of years hence with their self-titled debut, Fumaca Preta (which means 'black smoke' in case you weren't sure) are dark magicians of a wild and volatile analgam of whatever musical ingredients they see fit to throw into their collective cauldron at any given moment - be it crazed tropicalia, incendiary garage-punk, hypnotic psych-rock, Sabbath-style riffage, Butthole Surfers weirdness. wayward cumbia or maudlin balladry. Yet more mysterious than ever, they've somehow crafted a manner in which to be both more adventurous and more focused on this second effort, arriving at something akin to a tastefully disorientating dream sequence on a glorious psychic wavelength somewhere between high-energy Brazilian carnival and the nameless void.

Review: Contemporary afro funk wizardry abounds as London-based band Ibibio Sound Machine don a pair of disco, funk and boogie spectacles and study their Nigerian roots with attention to detail. The end result is a truly unique fusion of sounds that range from the 80s synth boogie of "The Talking Fish" to the Fela-level freneticisms of "I'm Running". Other highlights include the slamming pop jitters of "Let's Dance", the crazed synth squiggles and slap bass madness of "The Tortoise" and the alluring juxtaposition of modern drum production, captivating poetry and jazzy dynamics of "Prodigal Son". A highly accomplished debut... This needs your attention.

Review: Konkoma is the brainchild of Nostalgia 77's Ben Lamdin and saxophonist Mac Grunhard. Inspired by African music from the 1970s and 80s - predominantly Afro-funk, but also juju, highlife and mbaganga - and featuring esteemed Ghanaian musicians Alfred Bannerman and Emmanuel Rentzos, Konkoma is a vibrant and enjoyable debut album. Prince Fatty handles production, but wisely steers clear of contemporary. Wisely, he lets the songs speak for themselves. With Bannerman and Rentzoz in fine form, the result is a gorgeously optimistic set that ripples with sun-baked creativity. It doesn't break much ground, but its hardless worthless nostalgia, either. Either way, it's very enjoyable.

Review: Last seen presenting a retrospective of the past six years of recordings for the Staubgold label, Bogota's finest composer Eblis Alvarez returns to the Soundway label with Salvadora Robot, a rather fine fourth studio album as Meridian Brothers. Very much in line with the oddball nature of previous Meridian Brothers albums, Salvadora Robot is perhaps Alvarez's most ambitious set to date with each of the ten tracks delving deeper into the tropical rhythms of South America and twisting different Latin music styles into wild new shapes. Everything from Bossa Nova to Dominican Republic merengue via reggaeton is treated with dizzying skill by Alvarez for a most interesting album.

Review: Although hardly well known, the work of Bogota's Eblis Alvarez under the Meridian Brothers pseudonym is highly regarded by those in the know. This is largely down to a handful of productions that take Latin funk and soul into trippy new territory. Desesperanza, Alvarez's first full-length for Soundway, continues this theme, coming on like the results of a particularly vivid acid trip, deep in the Colombian rainforest. While tropical and undoubtedly Latin in construct, the constant use of psychedelic elements and mind-bending production techniques gives it a particularly blurry hue. It's a bit disarming at first, but explore further and you'll find a brilliant set of weird and wonderful "tropical psyche" gems.

Review: Conceived by Colombian musician Mario Galeano and English producer Will Holland, (better known as Quantic), Ondatropica brings together Colombian legends and young musicians alike and mixes up Columbian styles such as cumbia and champeta with beatboxing, hip-hop and funk. Although the project is undeniably audacious, the results are hugely impressive, with classical styles going hand in hand with all manner of analogue squiggles and experimental dub. Highlights are too numerous to mention, but include the dubbed out weirdness and live instrumentation of "Punkero Sonidero" and the live beatboxing and copious effect mangling on "3 Reyes De La Terepia". The CD version also comes with a 52 page booklet telling the fascinating story behind the project.
