Want You In My Soul
Cat: SOUTH 007. Rel: 12 Feb 20
Deep House
  1. Want You In My Soul (club mix) (8:18)
  2. Want You In My Soul (Summer In London edit) (4:51)
Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Flip over for the "Summer In London Edit" - a more stripped back and direct version, perfect for outdoor stages as the sun beats down.

Someday
Someday (12")
Cat: SOUTH 005. Rel: 22 Aug 18
Deep House
  1. Someday (club mix) (7:21)
  2. Someday (Some dub) (8:47)
  3. Someday (Accainstrumental) (6:22)
Review: Few vocal deep house records are quite as timeless as Cece Rogers' "Someday", a Marshall Jefferson produced anthem that has continued to be constantly played by discerning DJs ever since its original 1987 release. As most will tell you, it was also the major sample source for Liquid's rave anthem "Sweet Harmony". This South Street reissue replicates the track listing of that initial Atlantic release, albeit it in re-mastered form to sound a little meatier on modern club soundsystems. On the A-side you'll find the essential Club Mix, where Rogers' impeccable vocal and Jefferson's meandering piano solos naturally dominate. These piano solos take more prominence on the "Some Dub" version, which in true '87 style still includes key vocal passages drenched in dub delay, while the Accainstrumental is - ironically - a little more like a contemporary house Dub.

Remixes
Remixes (12")
Cat: SOUTH 006. Rel: 17 Apr 19
Deep House
  1. Here Comes The Sun (Francois K remix) (8:56)
  2. Turn Me On (Tony Humphries Got U Turned On dub) (7:50)
  3. Save Me (Coldcut remix) (6:38)
Review: South Street's latest missive gathers together a trio of club-friendly remixes of Nina Simone classics that first appeared on the 2006 compilation "Remixed & Reimagined". Francois K impresses with an A-side revision of Simone's celebrated cover of Beatles classic "Here Comes The Sun" that sounds like a long lost Larry Heard record from his classic Fingers Inc. period. Those after something a little more rolling and funk-fuelled should wrap their ears around Tony Humphries' Dub of "Turn Me On", which boasts a seductive mixture of Romanthony style hard loops and rumbling, UK garage influenced bass. Completing the package is Coldcut's fine re-imagining of "Save Me", which places Simone's heart-arching vocal atop skittish, club-ready drums and looped guitars.

Love Endeavor: Maurice Fulton Remixes
Cat: SOUTH 004. Rel: 09 May 18
Deep House
  1. Love Endeavor (Maurice Fulton remix) (6:09)
  2. Love Endeavor (Maurice Fulton remix instrumental) (6:09)
Review: For lovers, for dreamers, for anyone who knows a beautiful remix when they hear one... Maurice Fulton adds his magic to Alice's gospel-level 2006 album finale "Love Endeavour". That lavish piano hook, those powerful layered backing vocals and Alice's striking, yearning lead are all paid full respect by Fulton as he colours in the spaces with his warm signature discoid soul. Quintessential remix business with an instrumental thrown in for good measure. Feel the love.

Cracked EP
Cracked EP (12")
Cat: SOUTH 002. Rel: 01 Feb 17
Deep House
  1. Cracked (7:23)
  2. Evil Vibe (7:16)
Review: South Street is a new record label shrouded in a bit of mystery. The crew behind it is staying in the shadows for now as their goal is to focus solely on the music that they're putting out. One thing is for certain though, everyone involved all have the credentials and experience as they've been on the ball for a while. Their inaugural release really was testament to this, which featured a brilliant EP from Californian Urulu; you know that these guys aren't messing about, basically. The second release on the new imprint is also surrounded by a little 'hush hush'. Yaki Incipient is a new alias from a prominent Dutch house and techno artist, but that's all we know for now. The "Cracked" EP features on the A side a title track which works those dusty and funked up disco loops in the same vein as a certain original house gangster did back in the day. On the flip, the dirty disco cut ups continue with the rolling and hypntoic funk of "Evil Vibe".
