Acid Rain (reissue) (B-STOCK)
Cat: THANKYOU 006 (B-STOCK).

Balearic/Downtempo
Review: ***B-STOCK: Tear on top of outer sleeve, product in perfect working order***

Grammy award winning sound engineer Chris Lord Alge produced the music that makes up this Acid Rain release back in 1986. It has been somewhat forgotten an or overlooked ever since, but now Thank You rightfully bring it back to the fore. The tunes have a real sense of character and include two versions of an oddball leftfield downtempo chugger. One is a wild flurry of machine sounds and occult synths and the other gets even more unhinged. As well as those is a patriotic America monologue that comes with a superbly overblown and emotional piano that is best taken with tongue firmly in cheek.

Keep The Faith (remastered)
Cat: THANKYOU 007. Rel: 02 Oct 20
Deep House
  1. Keep The Faith (5:43)
  2. Beans (7:54)
  3. Floored (6:30)
Review: Way back in 1993, Back to Basics founders Dave Beer and Alistair Cooke headed into the studio with engineer Richard Brown and made their first and, poignantly, only record (Cooke tragically passed away a few months later). Credited to The God Squad, Keep the Faith doffed a cap to Beer's goth past by heavily sampling the Sisters of Mercy. Here re-mastered and reissued for the first time since, it's interesting to note how contemporary it sounds. Opener 'Keep the Faith' is a trippy late night chugger that combines razor-sharp guitar riffs with pulsating, arpeggio-style bass and house drums, while 'Beans' is a saucer-eyed house throb-job of the sort that Andrew Weatherall loved to play. Also impressive is 'Floored', a sparse mid-tempo affair rich in layered percussive and dubbed-out bass.

Disco/Reediciones
  1. Mebsouta (4:31)
  2. Al Eih (4:18)
  3. Rekka (bonus beats chant) (5:02)
Review: These days we're used to obscure dance records from around the world getting the reissue treatment. Even so, this previously CD-only Egyptian release from 1991 is a particularly deep pick. Happily, it's well worth the reissue treatment, particularly the breezy, colourful and deliciously groovy opener "Mabsouta", a bubbly and breathy synth-pop cover of Suzanne Vega classic "Tom's Diner" that wraps Simone's Egyptian vocals and sparkling pianos around a stunning synth bassline. You'll find more summery, almost Balearic synth-pop on the flip via the cheeky Hammond organ riffs, glistening guitars and dewy-eyed chords of "Al Eih". To round things off in style, Castro-Moore offers up a brilliant "Bonus Beats Chant" version of sparse but heavy drum machine and synthesizer jam "Rekka".
