Review: RECOMMENDED
We're struggling for many ways to describe Free Advice, aside from 'a genuinely wonderful listen'. The second record from San Francisco-based gems Cindy, it's an outing that remains understated from beginning to end, and yet somehow manages to deliver gritty, gruelling rock 'n' roll, euphoric day-tripping anthems, honest love songs and more.

At the most sedate, 'Seeing Double' sounds like it could almost frighten itself, a cute but damaged, delicate and loose arrangement. 'Wrong Answer' is more like a slap in the face but through a wall of static, fuzzy guitars and a thick layer of white noise helping keep what could be a runaway train in check. Just about. 'Fixed Idea' is bound to make you feel like there's still so much hope to cling to, and is among the most quietly empowering things to sound a bit like Velvet Underground we've had the pleasure of hearing in quite some time.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Often the most apt quotes come from unexpected places. The Great Spans of Muddy Time isn't just a great album title, it's reference to depression, originating from TV gardening legend Monty Don. It has now been re-used for the name of William Doyle's latest album in his post-East India Youth years, which have thus far been marked by a series of blissful instrumental LPs and the excellent, song-focussed Your Wilderness Revisited in 2017.

Things look to combine both here, with The Great Spans of Muddy Time an exceptional example of lo-fi folk-electronica, at times epic and monumental - huge, expansive synth builds - in other moods there's a Casiotone for the Painfully Alone quality to the more rhythmic tracks. An accomplished addition to an already exceptional oeuvre.

Review: It's not without good reason that people have been likening Peel Dream Magazine to My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab and Yo La Tengo. Helmed by Joe Stevens, one of New York's finest contemporary players, the outfit makes music that's tender but savage, powerful but delicate and packed with beautiful discordance hiding its sumptuous melodies. 'Agitprop Alterna' is their second full-length release and it certainly adds fuel to the argument that people need to take this lot very seriously. In addition to the aforementioned, here it nods to Velvet Underground (notice the tripped out, opiate-hazed interludes throughout the album) and krautrock-leaning art pop. The record drones, drives, grooves and perplexes on its course, but most of all it unarguably impresses. Or at least that's what we've got to say on the matter.

Review: Glenn Donaldson's latest album as the Reds, Pinks & Purples, Uncommon Weather, may nominally simultaneously be an "elusive portrait of San Francisco and a sef-portrait of the songwriter" (as the accompanying press release notes), but it largely sounds like the kind of baggy guitar-pop that was once the preserve of Manchester bands such as the Smiths and the Stone Roses. That means lots of glistening, effects-laden guitar sounds, strong choruses, occasional sweeping synth sounds and DIY grooves that let the other musical elements - and his vocals - take centre stage. It's a hugely attractive set all told that sounds like it was frozen in time sometime around 1989. To our ears, that's no bad thing.

Review: It's remarkable to think Anxiety Art is The Reds, Pinks and Purples' debut album. Released in 2019 on the excellent Spanish label Pretty Olivia, just 200 copies were available at the time, and they did exactly what 200 copies of anything tend to do. Cue pandemic style panic buying as fans, collectors, and observant bandwagon riders snapped up every last one.

Finally then, someone has seen sense to make this triumph of kitchen pop-rock more readily accessible, and we couldn't be happier. Alongside a delightful, slight, and wholly life-affirming playlist of 14 tracks that have probably forgotten more about guitar melodies than most will ever hope to learn, you also get an expanded collections of photographs of the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco, which partly inspired this record.

Review: The gold standard Big Crown label excels at heartbreaking Americana, blue-eyed soul and downbeat pop. A 116th release of such sounds now comes from Holy Hive who are back with a new bunch of songs after their 2020 debut album, Float Back To You, won widespread acclaim. Their trademark folk-soul sound is in full view once more here with falsetto vocals bring real heart aching over slow, downbeat drums. It's beautiful stuff that takes the form of two only subtle different singles here. Both wallow in their own sadness and delicateness but leaving a lasting impression.

Review: Jangle pop lovelies The Stroppies were pretty quick to return to the studio following their 2019 European tour. So quick they already have a new album ready to unveil, following on from the delightful 'Whoosh!', and the next record sees them once again deliver a collection of short, sharp but loose indie rock - sweet, seductive and reassuringly honest. Considering the niceness that seems to drip from every key and note, fans and newcomers alike will be happy to hear none of the energy or stomp has been lost. Opener 'Burning Bright' plays out like a thigh-slapping, boozy knees up. The title track sets a rollocking groove to hook you in, 'Rigid Men & Conduct Code' closes the LP on a timeless 60s rock 'n' roll tip. Of course numbers such as 'The Aisles of the Supermarket' peddle more shoegaze wares, but these are exceptions rather than the rule here.

Review: With the mass of TOY material out there we have London label Heavenly to thank, however this latest expedition sees the Brighton act land on Tough Love for the first time, a label straight outta their hometown. Happy In The Hollow presents the band's fourth LP overall and it's an album painting dystopic visions, however inspired to no end. Across the LP we are graced with synths that swoon and chime in unison to ghostly backing chorals, to the more ambient, end of the world strolls through darkened forests ("The Wilo). There are some more traditional UK jangly guitar moments, like "Jolt Awake", or beat down punk trappings of "Energy". Punk meets ends of the earth is here.

Review: Another psych-rock album from Toy, one of the few remaining genre acts that haven't faded into obscurity since the revival almost a decade ago? Well, not quite. What they warned us about with "Happy In The Hollow" - the track that preceded this long form - is now inescapable. A band that have discovered a sharper, less forgiving edge wield this powerful, streamlined pop sword and do some real damage. The fact "Songs Of Consumption" is a covers album only makes the stylistic direction more pronounced. If you've heard the originals of tracks like the Stooges' "Down On The Street" or the almost-unknown Nico bomb "Sixty/Forty" you appreciate what's been done here even more. Respectively dancefloor electronica and exotic, dreamy soundscapes in those two cases. Reinventions by the reinvented.
