  1. Orlando Magic (7:41)
  2. Cabrio Mango (5:27)
  3. 1981 (6:01)
  4. She Keeps It Good (5:47)
Review: For the fifth volume in their Tonic Edits series, the Toy Tonics crew has handed over the reins to label regular and sometime Razor 'N' Tape contributor COEO. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout. Opener "Orlando Magic" offers a tightened up, re-arranged take on a killer chunk of highlife disco, while "Cabrio Magio" appears to be a tooled-up take on a killer South American disco stomper. On the flip you'll find the rubbery electric bass, Chic style clipped guitars and eyes-closed vocals of "1981", as well as "She Keeps It Good", a superb P-funk/boogie rework which sees COEO brilliantly tease out the groove via some seriously cut-up loops.

  1. Karl Hector & Nicolas Tounga - "Ngunga Yeti Fofa" (The Joaquin Joe Claussell Electric Afrika version) (11:36)
  2. Vito & Druzzi - "Night Masquerade" (7:30)
  3. Kapote - "Besamo Fly" (7:03)
Review: There's much to enjoy on the latest volume in Toy Tonics' ongoing hallucinatory house series, regardless of your psychedelic state of mind. The undoubted standout is Joe Clausell's epic version of Karl Hector and Nicolas Tounga's "Ngunga Yeti Fofa", a feverish, dub-flecked deep house interpretation of a track rich in both African and South American vocals and instrumentation. That said, we're also fans of Vito and Druzzi's "Night Masquerade", where Steve Reich style marimba melodies and fizzing synthesizer solos rise about a jaunty, tropical house groove, while Kapote's "Besamo Fly" is a lolloping, mid-tempo romp full of delay-laden African vocal snippets, jaunty Afro-funk horns and sludgy drumbeats.

  1. Judge Not (Ray Mang Special mix) (8:00)
  2. Judge Not (Ray Mang instrumental mix) (7:20)
  3. Judge Not (Ray Mang reprise) (5:42)
Review: New York psychedelic soul/stoner disco fusionists Phenomenal Handclap Band have been rather quiet of late, with this surprise single on Toy Tonics marking the New York combo's first outing for 18 months. Curiously, there's no original version of "Judge Not" for us to assess, just three reworks from disco stalwart Ray Mang. They are, though, extremely good. The A-side "Special Remix" is particularly potent, with Mang lacing the band's breezy, gospel-influenced vocals and killer pianos solos over a lolloping West Coast disco groove. Those pianos take pride of place on the dub disco style flipside "Reprise Mix", which may well be our pick of a very strong bunch, and on the sweaty, dancefloor-ready "Instrumental" version.

  1. Remain Silent (Superpitcher remix) (8:17)
  2. Remain Silent (Superpitcher dub) (7:48)
  3. Remain Silent (Ray Mang extended mix) (6:28)
  4. Remain Silent (12" version) (5:17)
Review: Brooklyn's finest The Phenomenal Handclap Band continue to bolster their relationship with Toy Tonics via this second 12" that interestingly places the remixes out front and holds the original track back for the B2. That said, when the remixes come from the likes of Superpitcher (in original and dub form no less) you can see why the A side has fierce competition. The 'Pitcher is sounding stronger than ever taking the Handclappers to astral heights with his two sparkling, otherworldly takes on "Remain Silent". By contrast, Ray Mang brings a crystal clear beatdown vibe to his version on the flip, all fierce drums and slick licks to get strutting to. The original is no slouch either, channeling a little 70s AM radio gold and nailing it in style.
