Chicago Nights
Random Acts Of Insanity
Razz 09
Review: Although he's been an integral part of the Detroit deep house scene for nearly two decades, and commands the respect of his contemporaries, Marcellus Pittman has never really enjoyed the same level of acclaim as many of them. His long overdue first full-length Pieces may alter the perceptions of them that don't know. Formidably underground in its no-nonsense approach, it mixes raw, analogue house jams with the sort of spacey deepness most often associated with Motor City acts. In the latter category, the fluid "If The Earth Could Talk" and springy "Loneliness Leave Me Alone" stand out, while the "anything goes" synth jam "Random Acts of Insanity" shows his rarely seen playful side.

A Dream (Something Like) (6:38)
There's Somebody Out There (Jamie:326 edit) (8:03)
Breath Beat (4:48)
Review: Motor City veteran Marcellus Pittman has been in fine form since returning from a four-year hiatus in early 2018. This EP - his third of the year - is, of course, really rather good. Opener "Something Like (A Dream)" is particularly good, offering a perfect balance between the rolling, head-nodding, pitched-down lusciousness of Beatdown and the spacey, delay-laden warmth of more peak-time focused Detroit deep house. If you're looking for something a little less smooth, check the low-slung, off-kilter, cyber-acid rawness of "Jamie 326 Tsot". While rather good, it feels a little out of place next to the fluttering, stripped-back deep house tunefulness of "Breath Beat", whose echoing chords are especially alluring.

Fruits & Vegetable Groove

Deep House
Fruits & Vegetable Groove (2:44)
Love 4 My Kinfolk (3:18)
Review: It's rare to see Detroit stalwart Marcellus Pittman releasing a seven-inch single, but then he has stated that his latest excursion is "genre free". While that's not strictly true, it's certainly a pleasing diversion from his usual beatdown influenced deep house fare. A-side "Fruits And Vegetable Groove" is a chunk of hip-hop style MPC beat science, with Pittman expertly cutting-up drowsy samples, skewed beats and tipsy, mind-altering chords to create a suitably blunted, left-of-centre soundscape. "Love 4 My Kinfolk" is similarly laidback and groovy, with gentle instrumentation and fuzzy jazz-funk samples rising above a dusty, head-nodding groove.

Sneak Attack
Cat: UNI 1003. Rel: 22 Feb 16

Deep House
Sneak Attack (10:14)
Random Acts Of Insanity (8:19)
Review: Amid whispers of a new album from Unirhythm boss and Three Chairs stalwart Marcellus Pittman, two tracks from his excellent debut LP Pieces finally get committed to wax. It's a shame Pieces never got a vinyl release, but the chance to grip "Sneak Attack" and "Random Acts Of Insanity" on 12" should not be passed up. This 12" was actually released in 'blink and you'll miss it' white label format in 2014, but finally gets a proper issue! For those that don't have the LP, "Sneak Attack" is a curious concoction, with Syclops style electronics occasionally flowering over deep, dusty, intricately programmed rhythms. "Random Acts Of Insanity" feels a little bolder in approach, though its' rich chords and odd, off-kilter rhythm track are contrasted with some notably bonkers electronic touches.

Revenge For Nothing

Techno
Revenge For Nothing (8:38)
Red Dogon Star (7:34)
Review: We were somewhat surprised to discover that Revenge For Nothing is Marcellus Pittman's first 12" single for nearly three years. We were even more surprised when we heard the title track, a fantastically druggy, drum machine-heavy concoction that sounds like a long lost collaboration between the early house pioneers of Chicago and their techno counterparts in Detroit. The sparse but heavyweight feel of the track is matched by the trippy, low-slung simplicity of flipside "Red Dogon Star", where a kick-drum dominated rhythm track is peppered with fuzzy, jammed-out analogue bass, Yorkshire bleeps and mind-altering electronics.

Can't Forget About You
Cat: UNI 1005. Rel: 14 Feb 18

Deep House
Can't Forget About You (6:44)
All Is Love (4:16)
Creepy Crawlers 2 (5:15)
Review: You wait ages for a new Marcellus Pittman 12", and two come along at once. Can't Forget About You is the Detroit deep house producer's second EP in as many weeks following a near three-year hiatus. While the other 12", Revenge For Nothing, was raw, analogue-rich and abrasive, the three tracks here are altogether deeper, woozier and smoother. He begins with the simmering, ultra-deep beatdown vibes pf sensual lead cut "Can't Forget About You", before brilliantly breaking up the beats on "All Is Love", which also sees him make great use of some fluid and jazzy piano samples. Finally, Pittman opts for a more clandestine, late night vibe of the horror-influenced early morning hypnotism of "Creepy Crawlers".

Pick Yourself Up (feat Crystal Procedures)
Ode 2 Juan
Review: Underground house heads will very much be familiar with this tune. It has been circulating as a white label owned only by the coolest and most connected cats and now Detroit badman Marcellus Pittman does the right thing and gives it an official pressing on his own Unirhythm label. A-side jam 'Pick Yourself Up' (feat Crystal Procedures) is dusty, loopy, trippy house with swirling vocals adding to the late night feel, then 'Ode 2 Juan' slows things down to smoky basement house vibes with melancholic pads bringing hints of light to the muggy atmosphere.
