Review: Sixth in the series or rare and previously unreleased James Brown funk tunes. Up first is a full length and unedited version, a full 7.19 minutes of the funk classic 'I Cant Stand Myself When You Touch Me', recorded in 1968 with his 'white' band the Dapps in 1967. Sampled by Schooly D on 'Its Like That'. Secondly, the previously unreleased and unedited version of 'Let Yourself Go' which was recorded in 1967 in the empty Latin Casino nightclub in New Jersey with the James Brown orchestra. Previously released as a single of only 2.50 minutes long. First tune on Side Two is the previously unreleased complete take of the classic 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag' recorded in 1965. This is one of the earliest funk records of all time. This version is presented here for the first time in its original tempo and is nearly 7 minutes long. To finish it off is the previously unreleased and unedited version of 'Bring it Up (Hipsters Avenue)' which was recorded in 1966 with the James Brown Orchestra. You may recognize the Gangstarr sample from 'Manifest'. First time on vinyl for DJs with loud reproduction and full colour label. Contains fresh and unused breaks beats and samples!

Review: You'd be Madd to miss out on this (ahem)... Vinyl only and super-limited, Candy Man's soundclash banger (that samples the well-known horn hook from Sister Nancy's "Bam Bam") gets a fantastic dub treatment that oozes respect for the original AND dubstep class. To begin with the beats bolster the vibe of the original, but by the end we're all skanking to a well bodied bassline and reminder of how funky dubstep can be in the right hands.

As an artist who has done it all over the years from super sweet and soulful rollers to more dark, tech edged and menacing 2-step monsters, this one sits somewhere between all that. It has a crunchy drum line and races along at a fair lick, but the tender vocals from both male and female voices bring the warmth while soulful keys get draped over the top. The percussion is raw and relentless, though, so there is no way this one won't be blowing up the club at the peak time.

Review: The time seems ripe for UK producers to tackle the label game head on and launch their own imprints and following the steps of Tessela and Randomer, Hessle Audio regular Elgato comes through with his own eponymous label. Founded with little to no fanfare, this debut release speaks for itself, not least for the inclusion of the much sought after "Dunkel Jam". A stand out track from the Ben UFO Rinse FM mix from 2011, the jittery techno of "Dunkel Jam" still sounds immense today and no doubt the legions of YouTube denizens will be satisfied to finally own a copy. Complementing this, Elgato also includes "We Dream Electric" yet another example of his more recent experiments with strung out house, coming across like an introverted version of last year's killer Hessle cut "Zone".

Review: Keeping the details spare for fear of a major label reprisal, Michael Horse has imparted this white label to us, which take everyone's favourite Australian pop icon and revises her 2003 smasher "Slow". The first version holds back to let the considerably pitched down vocal take centre stage, with just a hat ticking overhead. On "Track 2" the beat kicks in; a muted and gravelly pulse of tough house music surrounded by splatters of machine debris and an instant forward-momentum, while "Track 3" merely repeats this motion with a tweaked arrangement. Unlike most edits there is a downright sinister edge to this cut which should send shivers down the dance if the time is right.

Review: After an impressive debut on BRSTL in 2012, Jay L is back on this white label release that has already garnered a lot of love from switched on house heads. It's a no-messing single sided release that builds on the foundations of his previous outing, offering up dusty, soul-inflected deep house music with a Detroit twist and a Bristol heart. There's a hooky vocal lick, but more notable is the perfectly filtered fuzziness of the chords that inject that all-important character into the track. With a bit of luck this should pave the way for more Jay L release to drop in the very near future.

Review: The fruitful partnership of bass music mavens Mak and Pasteman graduates to a white label release all of it's own with two cheeky edits suited to the most hybridized of dancefloors. "It Ain't Right" taps into a very familiar vocal turn, working the R&B of the original into a groove shaped like breakbeat but clothed in garage. On the flip "Jimmy Kendricks" is a stripped down house cut with subtle licks of vocal in a sparse environment, the space filled out by a booming thud of 808 flavour bass. Those seeking out a handy pair of custom-built battle weapons for diverse dances should look no further.
