Hype (Funk)
Hype (Funk) (limited 12")
Cat: UTTU 055. Rel: 21 Sep 15
Techno
  1. Hype (Funk) (5:14)
  2. Jam (6:11)
  3. Hype (Funk) (HELIX remix) (4:11)
Review: Gang Fatale's Bleaker delivers one of the simplest but deadliest mixing tools you'll hear all year. With its relentless kicks, loopy vocal sample and breakdown into classic amens, it's the type of rolling tech record you could imagine working in almost any DJ's sets from Scuba to VonStroke to Deetron to the Stanton Warriors. HELIX's remix, meanwhile, subverts the linear nature of the original and churns it through a trippy beat machine with added harmonic dynamics. Finally "Jam" takes Bleaker's stripped back style and rebuilds it with added Detroitian grit to the drums; all skittering hi-hats and jaw-breaking toms, it's designed purely for DJ creativity.

Review: Whether it's under the Black Deer or Willie Burns guise, it's fair to say that the cantankerous radio host, swimming instructor, producer, DJ and record buyer for The Thing known as William Burnett was responsible for any number of our favourite releases in recent times. Last seen indulging in some early 90s Mid Western style Acid Techno for The Trilogy Tapes, the latest Slab of Burns goodness comes from a label he's not previously graced. Unknown To The Unknown is however every bit as prolific as the producer, with DJ Haus issuing a veritable clutch of records in 2013 from the likes of Photonz, Slackk, Legowelt and DJ Stingray. A meeting of minds makes sense then, and the Woo Right EP is set to drop at the end of the month brandishing four tracks of SP1200 blessed hazy house music straight from the Willie Burns mould.

Review: BOOM! Talk about a bombshell landing on us like a ton of bricks! Or, rather, a load of locked grooves for us to bash out on any unsuspecting club-dweller. Big boys Willie Burns and DJ Overdose team up for a collaborative pack of stripped-down rhythms on DJ Haus' constantly inspiring Unknown To The Unknown, and we think these two are a perfect match. The former's been running his own strain of house since the beginning of the 2010s, while the latter's offered a very special sort of electro sound that takes plenty of influence from The Hague's school of thought and of course, the Miami sound. This is only a 12" but it feels like much more than that; the A-side is made up of two swinging house grooves that recall the best of the Chicago warehouse days, whereas the flip is comprised of 15 banging locked grooves for you to mash up and warp as you please throughout for your Saturday night jamboree. Absolutely sick - cop it!

  4. All The Fregs (6:31)
Review: Unknown To The Unknown's latest slab of saucer-eyed nostalgia comes from Daze, a producer whose previous excursions have landed on distorted techno imprint Lobster Theremin. Here, he's in full on early '90s revival mode, melding together dreamy chords, spacey melodies and skittish hardcore rhythms on opener "Leisure Complex". Fellow A-side cut "Centuries Later" concentrates on booming sub-bass and energy-packed jungle breaks, while "XX" bounces around impressively on a wave of early Good Looking chords and rock solid, '93 riddims. Finally, he returns to the 4/4 beats he's famous for with "All The Freqs", an early morning romp through acid house pastures.

Electro
  1. Feeding The Fad (4:51)
  2. Hip To The Hype (4:38)
  3. Probably Too Commercial (7:13)
Review: Label-hopping Dutchman DJ Overdose can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. Happily, he's in fine form on this first solo Unknown to the Unknown appearance since 2015's fantastic Housejam Freaker. Wisely, he's decided to steer clear of well-worn retro-futurist cliches (jungle breaks, hardcore revivalism and so on), instead delivering a trio of raw cuts that blend elements of electro, 1990 style European techno and blistering acid house. Flipside "Probably Too Commercial", a rough-and-ready dose of distorted, high octane electro smothered in alien electronics, is probably the pick of the bunch, though sweaty, stab-tastic opener "Feeding The Fad" - all razor-sharp electronic riffs, wayward drum machine beats and old school vocal samples - also impresses.

  6. LGTM (Simoncino bonus beat) (2:53)
Review: Dona's Plant Texture lays down more fresh produce in the form of the left-sided Italian beat selection. Dona takes the A-side with three versions; his RaveONine blend is a warped, woozy joint that tips a subversive nod towards to the trippier side of Detroit, his jungle mix lives up to its name with some classic breakwork while the Slow08 version takes us right into the middle of a gluey dancefloor, all slo-mo and sedative. Flip for three twists from fellow Italian Simoncinco; a wriggling acid groove, a thundering bleep-style dub and some rolling 909 drums for add creative mix pleasure. What a package. Ready for takeoff?

  1. DJ Plant Texture - "I Don't Dance" (7:37)
  2. DJ Shark - "Cat Ears" (6:41)
Review: DJ Plant Texture is this year's winner of 'production moniker of the year' (or at least he would be, should such an award actually exist). This 12" sees the Bari-based producer make his first appearance on DJ Haus' face-chewing, rave-inspired Unknown To The Unknown imprint. "I Don't Dance" is a typically full-throttle concoction, with the Italian producer making merry with mind-altering acid lines, snappy house rhythms and drowsy, ultra-deep chords. On the flip, Hungarian misfit Gnork dons his occasional "jungle techno" alias, DJ Shark, and delivers another typically spacey chunk of mid-90s D&B revivalism. It's rather fine, of course, and offers a refreshing alternative to the textured one's impressively manic A-side.

  6. Sacred Sex (6:23)
Review: Since 2011, Manchester's Oli Furness has been bashing out some seriously effective dance EPs, covering pretty much all corners of the house game, and that was surely the right way to go about landing a single for DJ Haus' mighty Unknown To The Unknown. Dance Trax Vol.6, as the title suggests, is the more effective, more beatdown corner of the label, and Furness fulfils this duty magnificently. The A-side, governed by three solid house-techno hybrids, calls all arses to the dancefloor, shining its fiery drums to and fro like a machine-gun spray; side B opens with a magnificent jungle reinterpretation of "Pitch Box" from DJ Swagger - this is on some early era Metalheadz tip! - which dives neatly into the hardcore-IDM re-visioning vision of "Tension" from Kreg Tanz. "Sacred Sex" closes off this fine-ass EP with a deep yet bouncy shade of pure house - marinated in analogue goodness, just how we like it!

  4. The Afterworld (DJ Fett Burger Orgonitt Meme deep mix)
Review: After powering up Klasse Recordings in 2010, Luca Lozano put out the one release on Morris Audio, and following a silent 2013, the Berliner is now a hot name thanks to this year's releases on Sex Tags UFO, Optimo Trax and now UTTU. "Mister Right Now" is a dirty, sexed-up club track that will undoubtedly be this record's most played cut, while a MPC slamming "Come With Me" has touches of DJ Sotofett's jungle style to remixing. A trancey-cheesy "The Afterworld (Trance-Gate mix)" is a funky tool for the opening DJ, while DJ Fett Burger's rework to the former is an elegant slice of soulful African percussions and Scandinavian hotness.

Review: 2014 was perhaps the most impressive year so far for Unknown To The Unknown with a veritable onslaught of club ready material from Mumdance, Willie Burns, Matrixxman, Ruf Dug and more. Never one to rest on his laurels, DJ Haus commences a new year in the same manner with Berlin-based US act Physical Therapy making his UTTU debut with the superbly named 12" The Waiting Room In DJ Hell. If you've indulged in previous Physical Therapy material, you'll know how much of a wise addition he is to the UTTU cause and the four tracks here are some of his most inspired studio offerings. The title track is a particular highlight, though any DJ who prefers their house music to be weirded out will find plenty of mileage throughout!

Techno
  1. Escape Your Future (7:48)
  2. Replicants (6:16)
  3. Oblique Action (7:19)
Review: More retroactive techno courtesy of the British Unknown To The Unknown camp, this time courtesy of French producer Realitycheck. He has appeared previously for the label with his Untitled Love EP, in addition to a great one on local imprint Renascence. Opening stormer "Escape Your Future" is drenched in analogue soul, just as you like it and channelling the same vibe as Hieroglyphic Being or John Heckle. The emotive "Replicants" is without a doubt the EP's most deep and introspective moment, but still retaining all those rusty classic drum sounds and dusty vintage synths. Finally, on the flip is the sci-fi odyssey that is the title track: classic electro sounds informed from a Motor City perspective and convincingly so. Respect!
