Abbashantie - "Break Down The Walls" (6:01)
Jerry & Neville - "Abbashantie Rock" (with Wackie's Rhythm Force) (7:13)
Review: Here's a precious reissue of a 12" single by Abbashantie (not to be confused with UK sound system giant Aba Shanti) and Neville & Jerry. Both were Jamaican reggae vocal duos who recorded for Wackie's, a still-going-strong US label and studio founded by Lloyd Barnes aka Wackie's or Bullwackie. The single was originally released in 1980 and features two utter groundshakers: 'Break Down The Walls' by Abbashantie and 'Abbashantie Rock' (with Wackie's Rhythm Force).

Horace Andy - "Serious Thing"
Bullwackies All Stars - "Serious Dub"
Review: The Bullwackies cut of Horace Andy's 'Serious Thing' eclipses on all sides the classic Bunny Lee version of five or so years earlier - Horace like an angel over a stepping roots arrangement, with the horns on side A imparting extra gravitas, and the majestic Wackies production extra effects on the flip. Originally released in 1981, in the company of Youthman, Sometime Girl, Rockfort Rock - the horns versions in the UK on the Infradig label, the guitar versions (side AA of this reissue) in the US on a white label stamped with the Wackies insignia - another Lloyd Barnes killer, dead seriously.

Review: Appearing originally on the Solid Groove label out of Croydon in South London, 'Exclusively' is sometimes misconstrued as the UK issue of 'Dance Hall Style'. The tracks from both were recorded at the same sessions - with Bullwackies joined at the controls by Junior Delahaye and Prince Douglas and issued close together in 1982-83. Half of 'Exclusively' non-exclusively versions four tracks from the Stateside release - three are re-titled - and also 'Eating Mess', which appeared on the first pressing of 'Dance Hall Style', though unlisted on the sleeve. The mixes are all different (and without dubs). Five further specials include the funky 'Musical Episode', a superior Bob Marley tribute, and a version of 'Rougher Yet'. It's all vintage Wackies, and spun out of Horace's all-time greatest album - unmissable.

Roots/Lovers Rock
Horace Andy - "Tribute To Bob Marley"
Jah Batta - "Great Super Star"
Horace Andy - "Love Hangover"
Horace Andy - "Lingering Spirit"
Review: This re-issue combines two 12"s. "Tribute To Bob Marley" was originally released on the Top Ranking International label in 1981, soon after the Wailer's death in May, and provided an outstanding cut on Horace Andy's exclusive album set issued the following year in London by Solid Groove. The flip side featured Jah Batta's DJ cut "Great Super Star", unaccredited on the original label. Lingering Spirit offers a completely different mix, first issued in England on the red Bullwackie's label in 1983 (its title more reticent now, after the hundreds of Marley tribute records). It was coupled with Horace's compelling interpretation of "Love Hangover" which though Lloyd Barnes himself has always been a soft touch for a bit of lovers - had been principally arranged and recorded by Prince Douglas, the year before.

Annette Brissett - "Hard To Find" (3:03)
Wackies Rhythm Force - "Hard To Find" (version) (3:07)
Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

More resplendent dub from Bullwackies.

Review: Magnificent dub album out originally on the Senrab label in 1976, when Lloyd Barnes' spars at the desk were Prince Douglas and Jah Upton, in the first months of the White Plains Road headquarters, and indeed as Upton - disheartened by the gang warfare that had crossed the path of the Bullwackies Disco sound - drifted away. The selection commemorates a series of brilliant 7"s and 12"s on labels like City Line and Wackies, and sister labels like Upton, Versatile, and Munchie Jackson's Earth imprint. Core rhythm tracks from Jamaica - Treasure Isle mostly, and then mixed by Tubby - had been worked over at the Sounds Unlimited studio on E 24th Street in Manhattan. There are few traces of singers, though: the Sylvester Brothers are singled out by the label artwork here. Baba Leslie's Black Horns - next piece to Wayne Jarrett's African Woman - is spun out of the opening track. The Love Joys are like genies in the stunning twin mixes of Disco Reggae. The track Dub Unlimited is John Clarke's Pollution (Unlimited Dub dubs singjay coverage of the Ali-Frazier Thriller In Manilla); Bullwackies Revenge is a version of the Chin Chow rhythm, a tribute to the restaurant next door; the Chosen Brothers' Talk To The Father is represented, and Andrew McCalla's Home By The Sea... But it would be wrong to bog the album down in these details - an all-time great dub LP.

Child Of Slave (6:02)
I Love You (6:07)
Review: The latest club-ready 12" from the Wackie's imprint brings together two more killer cuts from the vaults of legendary producer Lloyd 'Bullwackie' Barnes - both of which feature long-serving vocal group the Chosen Brothers. On the A-side you'll find the full extended mix of 1979 single 'Child In Slave', a haunting and heavy number in which the Chosen Brothers' reverb-laden vocals seemingly drift above a decidedly dubby rhythm track rich in delay-laden instrumentation and deep bass. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour both the original and alternate 'version' mixes of 'I Love You', a later lovers rock number with definite dub leanings that's as sweet and glassy-eyed as they come.

Wasn't It You (7:23)
Review: Another carefully considered reissue from Wackie's tackles two of Kingston born John Clarke's tracks from 1978. They first landed on the Jumbo Caribbean Disco label (which was actually based in Brooklyn) and here are just some of the tens of gems he recorded for the imprint. Both tracks are super hazy dubs with the clipped rhythms of "Big Leg Mary" and burrowing lead coming on heavy, while "Wasn't It You" is a smooth and deadly jam. This one has been known to fetch upwards of 100 quid on second hand markets, so move fast to secure yourself a sure fire winner.

Review: "Visions Of John Clarke" was a little thrown together for its original release in 1979. Still, its sleeve carried a ringing endorsement from Bullwackies himself - president of the John Clarke fan club - and the album attracted the interest of no less than Studio 1 boss Coxsone Dodd, whose bid for distribution-rights was thwarted when the Brooklyn label Makossa quickly put in for a full licence. The singer - not to be confused with Johnny Clark - had been running with the Wackies operation for the past six years, ever since moving from Jamaica to New York. He'd cut memorable sevens with co-founder Munchie Jackson for the Tafari label - like "In Search of The Human Race" and "Recession" - and with Lloyd Barnes for such Bullwackies imprints as Versatile and Wackies. Several are collected by these two albums, with another layer of modification: for example, on "Wasn't It You", Lloyd Barnes and Prince Douglas give a new treatment - and adding guitar - to the jumbo Caribbean disco twelve; on "Pollution" they remove the horns from the Wackies seven (though generally Baba Leslie is in full effect here).

Review: The Wackie label has been hard at work of late digging deep into the archives and turning out some crucial reissues. They have all been tasteful done with the 80s original stampers with blank Wackie's labels, all hand written and numbered and limited to just 300 copies. First up here is 'That's Not All' which comes in two parts across the A-side and is a spaced out and head twisting dub with some great studio effects, wispy melodies and freaky effects. 'Sing A Song' us a more traditional roots cut with low slung drums and 'Never Could Love This Way' is drenched in soul.

The record inaugurated Wackies' fruitful London connection. The second-pressing sleeve carries a nostalgic distribution credit for the long-gone Maroons Tunes shop, run by Rae Cheddie for Honest Jons. The core musicians here are Allah, Clive Hunt and Jerry Harris, with outstanding contributions from hornsman Sel Wheeler and Roy Robertson on bass, and John Clarke on the single vocal track. Review: Wackies Rhythm Force was the Wackie's label's session band and they first put out this album, The Dub Generals, in 1998. It is now reissued on the original label but as a self-titled The Dub Generals LP. It still packs the same essential and pure dub punch that it always did and for that reason, it's a sought-after original that costs a few quid if and when you manage to find one. The label was headed up by dub producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes who maintained a busy studio in the Bronx and worked with several different key players such as Horace Andy. The label was also a key inspiration for the legendary Berlin dub techno dons Basic Channel.

Review: The rather infamous Wackies label was the first to release Tyrone Evans' 1983 long player For Lovers Only. One of the standout tunes on that record was 'Rise Up', recorded at the label's own studio. The Disco Mix here is a cover of a 1982 tune by Max Romeo with a baseline that sounds a lot like The Police. On the flip is a different version of the same tune but picking a favourite here is silly - both are compelling and quirky collisions of dub, disco, reggae and soul with a Latin injection.

Review: The original 1981 12" of Itopia's 'Sunshine Love' is one of the most sought-after cuts in the Wackie's catalogue, with copies regularly changing hands for three-figure sums online. This 12" includes the two key cuts from that 12", the synth-sporting, electrofunk-era vocal reggae gem original mix of 'Sunshine Love' - all super-sweet group vocals, hybrid live/electronic grooves and colourful electronics - and the dub style 'Version', which boasts some seriously squelchy synth-bass. Over on the flip there's a chance to cop Itopia's upbeat 1984 reggae club-rocker, the similarly synth-splashed 'Keep a Rockin', plus one of the original 'Sunshine Love' flipsides, the NYC synth-skank that is 'Get Over'. In a word: essential.

Review: Tony O'Meally (aka Jah Batta) is the Bullwackies acolyte featured recently with Rhythm & Sound on the Burial Mix single 'Music Hit You'. On this album from 1983 his buoyant deejaying follows Lone Ranger's massive revival of U-Roy's legacy. Upful dancehall vibes address topics such as vegetarianism, skin colour, school, good old-fashioned rocking the mic. One toast laments Batta's girlfriend running off with Sugar Minott. And the album is a must even for its rhythms alone: basically top-notch Youth Promotion material from Channel One in Jamaica, overdubbed and remixed at White Plains Road in the Bronx, with contributions from Sly & Robbie, and Bagga and Jackie Mittoo from Brentford Road, alongside Wackies regulars. Version excursions include Sugar originals like Informer and Jezzreel's 'Stop Playing Tricks', Bob Marley's 'Too Much Trouble', and deadly do-overs of Studio One cornerstones like 'Throw Me Corn' and 'Real Rock'. Do it, Jah! Flash it!
