Review: Once known as the technical wunderkind of alt hip-hop collective Odd Future, the ascension of Earl Sweatshirt to incomparable outlier status as a wordsmith very much in his own lane, has been a muted spectacle to behold. Celebrating the tenth birthday of Doris (his acclaimed major label debut released in 2013) earlier this year in front of a sold out KOKO just a stone's throw (no pun intended) from our offices, the anniversary show was immediately followed by a mass exodus down to Camden's Jazz Cafe where a limited club experience teased material from the much-pondered collaborative project with legendary producer and long-time Earl affiliate The Alchemist. Currently available to stream while vinyl continues to be pressed, Voir Dire exudes a lackadaisical, dare we say positive demeanour across its brief half-hour runtime, with Earl unpacking his fading twenties, preparing for his encroaching thirties and delving into the shift in perspective that comes with fatherhood. Brimming with both artist's trademark flourishes of drugged out, apathetic delivery and chopped, screwed and warped jazz and soul samples, the subtle coalescing of styles results in a work that's equal parts enlightening yet understated, while long-time collaborators/friends Vince Staples and MIKE both offer standout appearances.

Review: It might come as a surprise that Soul Sold Separately is the first album by American rapper Freddie Gibbs to be released on a major label. The irony is certainly of the full-circle kind. Perhaps reflecting this turning point, it also contains some of Gibbs' most upper-echelonic collaborations yet - tunes with Rick Ross, Anderson Paak and Pusha T - while Gibbs also explores a far more dark and conspiratorial sound on the likes of 'Too Much', 'Dark Hearted', and 'CIA'.

Review: .It seems like half a lifetime ago that Linkin Park exploded from the underground nu-metal scene into the mainstream conscious with their debut album, Hybrid Theory. In actual fact, that was only the year 2000, a time when the sub genre itself was dominating charts and day time radio. As with many bands, though, it would be the difficult second with which they cemented their status as key proponents of the scene. Unleashing angsty lyrics, disarmingly addictive hooks and arrangements born out of hip-hop as much as rock, Meteora, LP number two, produced hits like 'Faint', 'Numb', and 'Somewhere I Belong'. Tracks that defined an era, in these circles at least, Lost Demos sees the group collate a wealth of material from that time - much of it previously unreleased - for an essential retrospective.

Review: Swimming by the late Mac Miller, released in 2018, stands as a poignant testament to the rapper's artistic evolution and introspective depth. The album is a sonic exploration of self-discovery and resilience, addressing themes of mental health and personal growth. Miller's introspective lyricism, coupled with lush production and jazzy instrumentation, creates a soulful and immersive soundscape with tracks like 'Self Care' and 'Ladders' showing his lyrical vulnerability and musical versatility. Swimming not only received critical acclaim but also serves as a bittersweet reflection on Miller's artistic prowess and leaving an indelible mark on fans in the process.

Review: American singer Omar Apollo dropped his debut album last year with singles such as 'Go Away', 'Bad Life', and 'Tamagotchi' all performing well. The record was the artist's first ever entry into the Billboard Top 200 which no doubt rewards him for deciding to rewrite the whole thing after not being happy with the first version. "I wasn't excited about it. It was good music - it wasn't bad music, but it didn't feel like me" he said at the time. The genre-hopping record mixes up pop-punk, r&B, hip-hop, indie-pop and elements of Latin trap, funk, psychedelic music and traditional Mexican music.

Review: You'll have to go pretty far to find anyone who doesn't crack a smile at the ever-so-slightly nasal tones of Tom Petty. The late-Earl of heartland and blues rock originally unveiled this record as his second solo full-length, back in 1994, and it earned triple-platinum sales for very good reason.

At times carefree and driven by a celebration of abandon as much as any time signature ('You Don't Know How It Feels', 'Wildflowers') in other moments reflective ('Don't Fade On Me'), and occasionally redemptive ('Crawling Back To You'), it is quite literally packed with the gamut of human emotion. And some very handy guitar work. Here extended (hence the All The Rest bit in the title), you also get an additional four discs of bang for your buck, including rare home recordings, live takes and alternative versions. We'll leave you to explore those, though.

Review: Bebe Rexha makes dance-pop relevant again with her self-defining third studio album Bebe, which is sure to cement her already-established credo as one of the underdogs of the contemporary pop landscape. Commencing its making back in December 2021 - beginning with 'Seasons' the first song written for the album - the album overall charts a definable blend of influences, notably that of 70s pop, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks (all of which are nonetheless channelled in a more bubblegum context). Of course, it also features Snoop Dogg on the track 'Satellite' - notably, Rexha is said to have "frequently smoked marijuana" while making the album.

Mike Skinner is surely deserving of National Treasure status by now, is he not? From mischievous young MC upstart to garage innovator and now the voice of the nation, his journey has been remarkable and as this album shows it isn't done yet. He said in the built-up to it that for the first time in his career, he has allowed himself to be more loose with his lyrics, to say enigmatic things, make odd references and use stranger metaphors that might not always make perfect sense but that feel right in the moment. That makes it a great listen, as well as all the usual catchy hooks and compelling beats.

Review: Pop's newest sensation Teddy Swims drops his latest project I've Tried Everything But Therapy, evoking to the New Zealander's unquenchable thirst for the outbound excesses of life. Intended, in his own words, as his last music project before he goes into therapy, the album mixes plodding pop ballads, pristine vocal deliveries, and motivational highs-and-lows to produce a confident array of songs in the key of life. All the tracks are massive cinematic uplifts, a mood which ensured by its booming production, and themes dealing with heartbreak, baggage, memory and exigency.

Review: The release of 'The Con X' marks a decade since indie-pop sister act Tegan & Sara's 2007 covers album 'The Con', furthermore, all proceeds from sales will go into the Tegan & Sara Foundation, an organisation dedicated to fighting for LGBTQ rights and equality. The collection here is impressively broad and varied, covering Chvrches, Ryan Adams, Kelly Lee Owens, Shamir and more. The duo's approach to the covers is creative and reinventive, and on the more stripped back covers the vocal work from the Quin sisters has the space to take centre stage and shine, showing just how much the duo have developed since their initial cover record.
