Review: Blur were always the posh, private school answer to the more streetwise cool of Oasis during the heyday of Brit pop during the mid to late 90s. Their second album Modern Life Is Rubbish got them back into the affections of the public after their debut album somewhat turned people off (with many thinking it was a cash in on the popular but fading Manchester sound) and saw the band fall behind the likes of Suede. Part of the raisin for the return to success was the sonic makeover which brought more tradition guitar-pop sounds back with lush melodies and poignant humour in the lyrics from lead singer Damon Albarn. On its 30th anniversary the album now gets a full reissue as part of National Album Day 2023

Review: The story of The Corrs speaks to all our romanticised images of how the music industry once worked. Recording demos in a makeshift home studio in Dundalk, Ireland, the familial group were playing a date at Whelan's, a Dublin bar with an enviable reputation for live music (the likes of Jeff Buckley, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party and Kate Nash have all graced the stage) at which Jean Kennedy Smith happened to be in attendance.

Review: Crosses (traditionally written as +++) is the shoegazing alt-rock collaboration of Deftones frontman Chino Moreno and Far guitarist Shaun Lopez. Combining elements of dream pop, darkwave, and witch house into their post-rock tinged machinations, whilst drawing on their previous output to concoct an atmosphere not dissimilar from their previous works, there's enough unique motifs for the material here to stand on its own. Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete. marks their first full-length since 2014's serene self-titled debut LP and comes less than a year after last December's illustrious return to from on the Permanent Radiant EP. With outside producers such as Dawn Golden receiving credits as well as the appearance of Run The Jewels mastermind El-P and The Cure's Robert Smith, expect another dizzying batch of euphoric, hypnotic, sultry and sinister dreamgaze bliss.

Review: ††† (Crosses) are a synthwave band, first formed in 2011 by former Deftones member Chino Moreno, Far's Shaun Lopez and bassist Chuck Doom. Swooping in on the extant enthusiasm for chilling sounds popular at the time, like dungeon synth and witch house - but also bringing in classic synthpop elements from older bands like Depeche Mode - their music took the music press by storm. What was thought to be a short-lived revival of a sound, however, led to them not releasing any music after their debut, until now. Review: No matter what type of project Deftones followed up their career-defining White Pony with, it was destined to disappoint at least some of their devout fanbase. Originally released in 2003, the band's self-titled fourth effort would mark their final collaborative project with iconic producer Terry Date (until reuniting for 2020's Ohms), while notably eschewing much of the "nu-metal" residue that still clung to their sonic makeup. Embracing elements of trip-hop and post-metal, while directly linking the group to the "are they or aren't they shoegaze?" debate which has loomed overhead ever since, the album has seen a steady reassessment from lacklustre follow up to underappreciated gem. With any luck, this reissue should continue to help highlight the cause as cuts such as 'Minerva' still soar with triumphant yet sultry hypnotics while 'Hexagram' serves as one of the heftiest cuts in the band's canon. It didn't even need an additional title. This is simply Deftones, and it still slaps two decades on.

Review: First released back in 2006, Electronic's on-point 'best of' collection returns in expanded, double-disc form. So, alongside the original collection (CD1), with its mix of singles and cuts plucked from Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr's three collaborative albums, we're treated to a second disc packed with rarities, lesser-known remixes and largely forgotten B-sides. There are some genuine treats to be found, including a swathe of club-focused mixes that showcase the project's dance music roots. The combined clout of these names surely amounted to enough credit to patent the name "Electronic", which always to us felt partially like an attempt to become synonymous with the music genre itself (as if these guys weren't synonymous with it already). On Get The Message, a 2006 compilation named after the second single from their debut album, we hear a thorough checking of their contribution to the golden decade that is the 1990s, cycling chronologically through the group's greatest hits, as well as some extra rarities and tidbits for curious fans.

Review: The Flaming Lips are among the greatest musical enigmas of the late-20th and early-21st centuries. If you've not seen the exceptional and insightful documentary, The Fearless Freaks, then we highly recommend doing so. The film charts the outfit from their early days as what might be described a white noise and industrial troupe, through to their crossover into mainstream success via one of the most unique indie-pop sounds we have ever encountered. Suffice to say, then, watching them live is an inimitable experience, an evening of surreal inflatables plucked straight from psychedelic somewhere and frantic strobe-lit guitar cacophonies. While this recording of their whole-of-record rendition of landmark LP Yoshimi doesn't really touch upon anything that came before said album, it does capture what makes their performances so incredible.

Review: It might not be as widely celebrated as their self titled full length, but Fleetwood Mac's Rumours is still a towering album from one of the greatest bands of the last 50 years. It was the British-American outfit's 11th and came back in 1977, then just months later a live version was recorded capturing the opening night of the band's tour at The Forum - that's the one in Inglewood, California rather than Kenitsh Town - on 29 August. It captures the energy and excellent of the band, the crowd, the music and nothing from it aside from ''Gold Dust Woman' (in 2020) has ever been officially released before. It now gets full treatment across four sides of limited edition vinyl and is superb reminder of a band at the peak of their power.
