Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Review: It has taken five years for FKA Twigs to follow up her astonishing first album, "LP1". With that kind of timeframe, you can't help but have high expectations for the finished product, expectations "Magdalene" more than meets from the off. An artist in the truest sense - with every step and stage in the recording process controlled by her - it's an accomplished comeback for a woman who in the last half decade has experienced both personal loss and major physical challenges. Don't expect more of the same, then, but instead a talent finding new purpose and new confidence following difficult times. With the ever-impressive Nicolas Jaar giving a helping hand, the result is a raw, honest record that's deeply personal, full of self-reflection and, ultimately, accepting and positive. Not to mention destined to be on repeat. Her position as one of the UK's most vital and compelling acts re-confirmed.

Review: Young Turks clearly believe that Tahlilah Barnett, formerly known as Twigs (hence the FKA Twigs pseudonym) is a star in the making. They plucked her from obscurity last year and have since released a number of highly regarded singles. This debut album expands on her EPs to date, showcasing her woozy, intricate take on post-R&B. Naturally, her vocals - fragile and evocative, sounding not unlike Kate Bush on occasions - take centre stage, riding a bed of layered-up head-nodding rhythms, post dubstep grooves, trip-hop soundscapes, fizzing electronics and bubbling synthesizers. It's an intoxicating brew, all told, and one that delivers further proof of Barnett's immense potential.

Review: Back in 2015, In Colour was Jamie xx's solo full-length debut. It had huge interest and pressure given how his work with The xx had become so celebrated by all musical circles in the years previous. On it, he did a fine job of pulling together all the sounds and scenes he'd dabbled in over the six years since he first emerged, with dazzling results making it one the best records of the last decade. It was written while he still was active with the band and was a precursor to a strong period of work in electronic circles that saw him become the real darling he remains today.

Review: Talk about good things coming to those who wait. Lewis Roberts' finally unveils his first album, a decade after his debut single dropped under the Koreless moniker. Of course that time frame should really come as no surprise, because even those first tracks - '4D' and 'MTI' - sounded as though they'd been crafted over a significant amount of time, separating wheat from chaff to ensure only the finest elements and most complete finished products made the end cut.

Here we are then, ten years later, looking at another masterpiece, only this time in long form. Showcasing deft ability to playfully use samples - at times almost as though Todd Edwards has been dropped into a futurist rave ('Joy Squad') - and explore levels of musicality far beyond the range of most producers. Next level post-UK bass goodness.

Review: Short Stories member Lewis Roberts has been releasing solo music as Koreless for a decade, shaping and refining a trademark sound rich in fizzing electronics, experimental intent, bold melodies and off-kilter rhythms. It's this personal musical vision that's at the heart of Agor (Welsh for 'open', fact fans), his assured and entertaining debut album. Accurately describing that musical vision can be tough, even for experienced and knowledgeable listeners, but it's basically a chopped and screwed fusion of colourful underground synth-pop, chillwave, melodious electronica, electro and future R&B, with a dash of the widescreen shimmer associated with movie soundtracks thrown in.

Review: With just over a month to go until the long-awaited debut LP from Welsh beat-wizard Koreless arrives, it's easy to see why this two-track on the renamed Young imprint (formerly Young Turks) might tip a few heads over the edge. Anticipation was already pretty significant before last month's track was unveiled, 'Joy Squad', and now it's included on a double-A side and in many ways is the weaker of the two.

'White Picket Fence' is one of those real electronic oddities - it kind of almost sounds like cinematic acoustic or journeyman folk in moments, but really is all about waves of uplifting synth, the kind of noises that scream distorted euphoria. It's earthy, and yet out there like Pluto. Coupled with the beguiling horror movie, IDM, UK step of the flip, it's a powerhouse package for the mind.

Review: Indica Dubs and Kai Dub link up here for their second collaboration, which is the first release of the year for the label. It features the full flavour and futuristic stepper that is 'Elevation Dub', complete with wooden hits and Digital pads, warrior chords and a nice sleek aesthetic. 'Higher Dub' then flip sit into a more heady affair with plenty of mad studio effects and endless reverb, floating toms and sizzled pads. These triumphant tunes are primed and ready for big plays on huge sound systems.

Review: This second full-length from Aaron Jerome's masked SBTRKT project is something of an eclectic affair featuring a supporting cast that could fill out Field Day. It seems like the SBTRKT sound has developed into a more subtle and finessed one in the period since Jerome issued his debut, self titled album. While there are, of course, heavyweight moments of thrilling dancefloor release - see the kaleidoscopic, Hud Mo-goes-post dubstep flex of "Lantern" - by and large the album sticks to slower tempos and woozier, more soulful moods, delivering tracks variously influenced by Prince, hip-hop, modern soul, R&B and piano ballads. The result is a sophisticated, vibrant and thoroughly mature electronic pop album blessed with an impressive array of guest vocalists (Jessie Ware, Andrew Ashong, Sampha and Ezra Koenig all feature).

Review: Virtuoso contemporary jazz star Kamasi Washington got involved with the hit Netflix documentary Becoming right at the early stages. The film is a four time Emmy-nominated glimpse into the life of Michelle Obama, filled with as many profound moments as tender and vulnerable ones. All of those are perfectly translated into gentle jazz, sweeping symphonies and empowering passages of sound that tell a very real story even without seeing the movie. Fans of the Los Angeles saxophonist will recognise a dialling back in the scale of his usual sound, but that is never to the detriment of the work here, which is maybe his most accessible work yet.

Review: Kamasi Washington's latest effort is a little different from his previous releases, which delighted in taking spiritual and post-bop jazz in a myriad of thrilling new directions. Befitting its status as a soundtrack - the music on Becoming was written to feature on Nadia Hallgren's Netflix documentary of the same name on Michelle Obama - the compositions unveiled by Washington are breezy, accessible and seeped in musical positivity. There are lots of memorable melodic themes throughout the album, with bold and catchy, up-beat jazz numbers being joined by melancholic, contemplative compositions and even nods towards soul-jazz, Motown style soul and cheery jazz-funk.

Review: There's a growing feeling both inside and outside jazz that Kamasi Washington could well turn out to be one of the style's all-time greats. He's certainly making all the right moves, delivering thought-provoking concept albums of eyebrow-raising length that simply refuse to settle on one sound, rhythm, style or sub-genre. Heaven & Earth, his first album for almost three years, continues this trend, comprising angry instrumental answers to America's growing issues with class division and racism, Rotary Connection style workouts, Sun Ra-esque spiritual workouts, funk and soul-influenced burners, spiraling choral and orchestral affairs, and electric fusions of rubbery synth-funk and mind-altering jazz-blues. Typically, the results are never less than sublime, with Washington's virtuoso saxophone playing taking centre stage throughout.

Review: Arriving five years after the London trio's last album 'Co-Exist', this third effort shows a band ready to make a bold step on from the sound that haunted radio and TV links alike around the start of this decade. And in what could be said to be a move from innocence to experience, they're doing so with hitherto unrevealed confidence and chutzpah..'I See You' expands on their trademark intimate melancholia with considerable finesse, yet longtime fans shouldn't worry too much about them losing their gloomy charm in the process - more so this is a band brandishing an expanded palette where once they were content to paint their room black.
