Automat - "Berlin Wall" (feat Genesis Breyer P-Orridge)
Automat - "MTY"
Automat - "CUL"
Kreidler - "Snowblind"
Kreidler - "Escaped"
Review: Kreidler and Automat have unconsciously kept the Krautrock heritage alive, with both sets of outfits mystically blending more traditional instruments together with nutty electronic twerkings. For their Record Store Day special, they've joined forces with Genesis P-Orridge, formerly of Throbbing Gristle, and have given us a magnetic split release. Automat's tracks are mechanical but nonetheless organic in texture, rendered even more fragile by P-Orridge's trademark rantings. Kreidler, on the other hand, go for a more classic approach, where electronic guitars are twisted and turned into an absolute frenzy amid slicing drum breaks and subtle electronic manipulations. Needless to say, this is a strong release from Bureau B.

Review: Repetitive, minimal avant-garde electronic music from the underground of Berlin. Ludwig Papenberg and Johannes Vester founded Alu in 1980 after the psychedelic group Sand. The following year, they released the single "Please Wait!". Although Alu came from the Berlin 'Kassettenuntergrund', it was a more brittle sound not too dissimilar from British bands of the time like like Nocturnal Emissions or Cabaret Voltaire. A group shake-up meant the addition of singer Nadja Molt and while internally marked as the second phase of the group. No studio recordings were released and the group appeared only at concerts, documented on two live LPs and in 192 Papenberg left, with Vester and Molt forming Alu III. In the accompanying text of their 1983 release Spiritual Renewal, they wrote: 'Our work lies in, where possible, storing a lot of sounds and rhythmic structures in synthesizers and rhythm machines to be released freely in concert. Texts and singing are also spontaneous inspirations.'

Review: On their two previous albums, Automat showcased a hard-to-pigeonhole sound that gleefully fused elements of dub, electronica, krautrock, post-punk and '80s industrial. Ostwest explores similar sonic territory, with the German trio making use of both live instrumentation (electric bass, slack-tuned drums, Fender Rhodes electric piano) and drowsy electronics. The resultant tracks flit between ghostly downtempo soundscapes (see the luscious "Yuko" and dub-wise "Tempelhof") and more energetic, low-slung cuts, with occasional surprises thrown in (see the Afro-tinged tribal workout that draws the album to a close, "Transit"). As usual, it's tricky to pigeonhole, but rarely less than hugely entertaining.

Review: While Fritz Lang's Metropolis has enjoyed reams of revisionist soundtracks in the near-century since it was released, Robert Weine's The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari has remained a more cult concern of Weimar-era cinema. Karl Bartos, one of the early members of Kraftwerk, has indulged his passion for the art of this unique period between world wars, when technology and art was changing as rapidly as the world around them. Employing his considerable experience and well-appointed studio to the task of re-soundtracking, Bartos has created this vibrant new score for Weine's film, pressed up here on double vinyl with an accompanying 16-page booklet.

Review: Off The Record sees German label Bureau B offer up a wonderful presentation of music from ex Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos. Apparently originally conceived whilst Bartos was part of the iconic group, these twelve tracks have been fully developed from the musical diary he kept all those years ago. What was initially a secret collection of rhythms, riffs, hooks, chords and melodies have been reconceived and re-contextualised by Bartos in a modern setting and Off The Record should make for compelling listening for the legions of Kraftwerk completists out there. "The Binary Code" stands out, a swooping array of 8bit arpeggios unfurling and taking your senses with you whilst "Musica Ex Machina" is the sort of chugging, busy vocoder led machine funk you'd feasibly hear in a Weatherall back to back set with Smagghe

Review: The story goes that, back when he was a core member of Kraftwerk, Karl Bartos helped create the band's own theme for Fritz Lang's often-soundtracked Metropolis. Bartos has an enduring fascination with the more daring artwork of the early 20th Century, and so he took on the challenge of creating a new score for Robert Weine's landmark silent movie The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari. Using an assortment of synths in his Hamburg studio, Bartos creates a symphonious soundtrack which shows his passion for the subject matter in stark detail. A must-check for fans of Bartos and the wider Kraftwerk phenomenon, as well as fans of Weine's pioneering psychological thriller.

Review: Musician, writer and sometime member of Kraftwerk Karl Bartos wrote The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari as a tribute to the iconic 1920 silent horror film whose original music score had long been lost. Through electronic compositions, Bartos skilfully captures the eerie atmosphere and psychological depth of the movie, enhancing its haunting narrative with his sonic reinterpretation. The album immerses listeners in a world of suspense and mystery, blending ominous synth melodies with pulsating rhythms and cinematic soundscapes. Bartos' masterful fusion of retro-futuristic aesthetics and contemporary electronic music was made after he dug deep into his own archives to recreate epics he wrote as a young classical musician and offers an all-new perspective on the original soundtrack.

The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari (DVD)
Review: Musician and writer Karl Bartos has long been admirer of Weimar-era culture. During his time in Kraftwerk, he helped create the stunning track 'Metropolis', directly inspired by a band viewing of the classic 1927 Fritz Lang film of the same name. The original orchestral music composed for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by Giuseppe Becce had long been lost and in 2005, after watching the film, Bartos imagined what it would be like to create an entirely new one in the 21st Century in his home studios in Hamburg. Now with crystal clear images, digitally restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Foundation, the film is visually the best quality it has ever been and now, with Bartos' soundtrack, there is impressive sound to go with the haunting vision. Narrative film music and sound design collide in Robert Wiene's classic 1920 psychological thriller, this latest auditory complement of which is now issued on a large 37-track CD and 48-page booklet.

Review: To mark German outfit Cluster 71's 50th anniversary, the influential album gets a special limited-edition reissue on just 500 copies of vinyl. This is one record that people come together to fawn over as having set the world on fire for its fierce fusion of cold wave and synth sounds. Initially released in 1971 as the band's debut, it was a little departure from their earliest, hardest industrials sounds towards a more soft atmosphere with disorientating atmospherics, feedback and noise. It is an arresting and hypnotic listen which has often been cited as an influence on artists like Brian Eno, John Foxx and Coil.

Review: To mark German outfit Cluster continue to make their 50th anniversary with the reissue of some of their most vital albums. They are a band that had an influence on artists like Brian Eno, John Foxx and Coil from their 1971 debut Cluster 71 onwards. They were fine fusionists who collided cold wave and synth sounds with disorientating atmospherics, feedback and noise as this second album in 1972 shows. It was made by the reduced duo of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius on all tracks although the third member Conny Plank is credited as a composer. It was the band's first release for Krautrock label Brain with more to follow until 1975.

Review: Dorothea Raukes' Deutsche Wertabeit project is one of those Kraut LP's which have been painfully overlooked through the years. The Streetmark band member's solo project was comprised solely of Korg equipment and very singular sorts of power electronics. What's particularly impressive is Raukes' ability to create a sense of movement from nothing but floating keys and whispy pads - check "Unter Tage" for a taste - taking you in a deep and meditative head-space. For fans of Roedelius and the rest of the throng.

Review: Talk about creating a universe for yourself. Die Welttraumforscher, or World Dream Explorer, is an imagined musical trio with cosmic tendencies conjured by the mind of Swiss electronic composer Christian Pfluger. Active since 1981, 41 years in and the project is still going very strong and admired by a cult legion of international fans alongside some of the most influential contemporary synth doyens.

Liederbuch is the first new material in some time, an event that will be celebrated by many. Largely rooted in psychedelic indie-tronica, downbeat lounge-worthy beats, and blissful acoustic alt-balladry, it's a beautiful collection showcasing the ingenuity inherent in the music of a truly enigmatic artist who, despite focusing largely on the same endeavour for four decades now, has never remained still for long.

Review: Alongside regular studio buddy Ralf Beck and a slew of guest musicians, Sebastian Lee Philipp made his debut as Die Wild Jagd in 2015 with a superb debut album on Bureau B. Here Philipp and Beck offer up album number three (their second set appeared in 2018) on the same label. It's an inspired fusion of ambient, krautrock and experimental electronics featuring four lengthy compositions. Perhaps the best place to start is with ten-minute epic "Himmelfahrten", a hazy, hypnotic and low-slung affair in which echoing vocals, nagging guitar hooks and weirdo effects rise above a killer krautrock groove. Like the other cuts on the set, the track intensifies greatly as it goes along, before breaking down into the most blissful of ambient endings.

Review: It's absolutely mind-blowing that Faust released this in 1973. Well, if you know Faust then you know when they became active, and as such it's perfectly logical that they were putting records out when this was unveiled. However, the sounds it contains are so beyond the realms of what we associate with that age it's hard to understand how they ever conceived them.

Having said that, some tracks here are more 'normal'. For example the sweet acoustic folk-ish-ness of 'Flashback Caruso', or the strange, trippy jazz blues on 'Hermanns Lament'. But even these seem to have been born in a different world. Or parallel universe. Then you're given the cut and paste broken beat numbers like 'Don't!', and you realise just how ahead of its time this is.

Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing much about Fondation, a husband-and-wife duo that released a trio of obscure, hard-to-find cassettes between 1980 and '83. Fortunately, Bureau B is here to help. The Hamburg imprint has put together this excellent retrospective, which showcases best of all three sought-after tapes. What shines through from start to finish is the pairs distinctive style, which casually joined the dots between experimental ambient, kosmiche, avant-garde synth-rock, American minimalism (think Pat Metheny's performance of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint run through distortion pedals) and drowsy, beat-less psychedelia. It's an arresting and hugely enjoyable collection, all told, and one that should appeal to anyone with an appetite for DIY ambient and lo-fi exotica.

Review: Initially recorded and released in 1980, Ashra drummer Harold Grosskopf's debut solo album "Synthesist" has long been one of the essential audio documents of the "Berliner Schule" (Berlin school) electronic scene. It's certainly a stunning album: a set of attractive, futuristic, far-sighted synthesizer soundscapes, created at a time when electronic music technology was still in its infancy, that combines heady, beat-less ambient workouts and Terry Riley style minimalist movements, with more up-tempo workouts that recall the period work of Tangerine Dream. This 40th anniversary reissue from Bureau B showcases a re-mastered version of the original album on side A, with a second disc of equally ear-catching contemporary interpretations by the likes of Paul Fick, Steve Baltes, Love Songs and Stefan Lewin.

Review: Known to some as the first drummer to play alongside sequenced music, German electronic musician and composer Harald Grosskopf unveiled his first solo album back in 1980, and if the contents still sound exploratory, adventurous and pioneering now we can only imagine finding them four decades ago. OK, so those originals have undergone something of a makeover here, with new interpretations coming from talent including Thorsten Quaeschning, Paul Frick, Keidler and Stefan Lewin, among others. Nevertheless, the groundwork set out by Grosskopf, and the Berliner Schule musical tradition, remain the real highlights of the package - a veritable lesson in one of the most significant movements in electronic music, placed within a contemporary context. We wouldn't consider any collection of arpeggiated synth cornerstones complete without this one in there.

Featuring tracks previously released on labels including Disk, The Trilogy Tapes and Versatile, the varied instrumentals on show draw heavily on his love of African rhythms, ear-catching electronica and the sparse, subtly changing hypnotism of classic American minimalism. The plentiful highlights include the North African-informed dancefloor psychedelia of 'Apakapa', the dense drums of 'Ayranman' and 'Harmony Labelle' and the Reich-on-synths bliss of 'Some Blue Beats'.

Review: Kreidler return to Bureau B and not without good reason. Their seventh outing on the highly respected label follows suit on previous exploits, exploring some outer limits of cosmic-leaning, guitar-led, electronically augmented stuff. Tracks that feel made for the hidden dancefloors of weird basements as much as the soundtracks to avant garde science fiction. And if that's too much of a stretch, let's just say 'mesmerising' and have done with it. Comparing and contrasting the warm bleeps and filtered hooks of 'Diver', for example, with 'Tanger Telex' and its strange, smoky brass trip into downtempo smoky heaven serves as a quick example of just how broad yet coherent Twists is. As does 'Arthmetique', a strange, patient thing of rhythmic licks and spoken word, when considered next to the fuzzy, dub-tech-meets-math rock of 'Mount Mason'.

Review: German band Kreidler reach the rather significant milestone of a fifteenth studio album here with Spells And Daubs. By now they are masters of their form, which is a mix of electronica and krautrock but with hints of influence from British pop music. The rhythms are bendy and dubby, ever evolving and alluring from the off with well defined lines and lots of little details all fleshing out the grooves. Dark melodies never grow too foreboding as clicks, whirrs and hits swing to and fro over the top. It is a trance including record that demands close listening on a good system for maximum effect.

Review: On this quietly impressive collection, Bureau B dips into the tape archives of German new wave artist Heiko Male, offering up a selection of previously unreleased solo demos recorded during the mid 1980s. At that time, Male was tasting underground success as part of Camouflage, but these recordings - mostly made using a sparse selection of electronic instruments - are a bit more varied, offering a mixture of prototype electronic, off-kilter new wave instrumentals, dark electro jams, spacey ambient workouts and squelcbhy, hard-to-pigeonhole cuts rippling with ear-pleasing melodies, bubby basslines and shimmering synthesizer motifs. Throw in the odd nod towards industrial music and you have a hugely entertaining collection of previously hidden recordings.

Review: 40 years on, the work of German electronic pioneers is ripe for reflection. Dieter Mobius in particular was in full flight following his breakthrough years in Cluster, working prolifically with Conny Plank for a fruitful collaborative mission as well as his own solo works, of which Tonspuren is one of the finest. As well as creating innovative sonic forms through his exploration of synthesis, Moebius was equally fascinating for the playful spirit of his music. It's as humorous and delightfully odd as it is compelling, whether dealing in abrasive, motorik sequences or revelling in dislocated cascades of textural ambient expression.

Review: Back in 2014, German electronic legend Dieter Moebius joined forces with chamber music composer Tim Story and Jon "Wobbly" Leidecker on Snowghost Places, an album that explored the space between krautrock, ambient, minimal techno and experimental electronica. Three years on, the trio presents the follow-up, Familiar. It's a fitting title, because the album explores similar sonic territory, albeit in a myriad of different names. Across the course of the album's six tracks, expect to hear blasts of warped and manipulation Can style drums, glitchy and Autechre-esque electronic rhythms, acoustic instrumental samples wrapped around pulsing minimalist techno rhythms, discordant electronic sounds and otherworldly ambient workouts.

Review: Moebius & Tietchens presents something very special indeed - two of the greats of German avant-garde music coming together for a collaborative record. Asmus Tietchens has been active in the realms of music concrete and abstract music for many years, while Dieter Moebius is known for his work as a member of Cluster and Harmonia. The results are just as experimental as you would expect, going from the plucked loops of "Kattrepel", through the radiophonic abstractions of "Vincent", the swampy proto-techno of "Raboisen" and the heavily industrial textures of "Grimm", its every bit as inquisitive as you would expect from these two minds.

Every once in a while you get hold of an album with a title that couldn't be more fitting. Pioff? is one of those moments. Quite what this music is, or where it comes from, is anyone's guess on first impressions, making for perhaps the best use of a question mark we have seen in some time. As jaunty and upbeat as it is robotic and regimented, here's proof that German funk is all about that mechanical strut.

Whether it's 'Pass Auf!', a track that boasts one of the most infectious stepping beats you could ask for, the sublime e-funk pop of 'In Der Nacht', or the woozy guitar and synth odyssey 'Schau Dich Doch An', the fact of the matter is Pioff make tunes that could have been made at any time in human history - past or future. Kraut-slo-mo-chug-electro-groove might be one way to put it.

Review: Gunter Schickert was roadie and assistant to German cosmiche pioneer Klaus Schulze, and as such was exposed much of the experimental sounds of the 70s. Bureau B have seen fit to reissue his 1979 album Uberfallig, undoubtedly a lost gem of the era. "Puls" owes an obvious debt to Schulze, rippling as it does on a wave of arpeggios, but the folky "In Der Zeit" has echoes of Nick Drake. "Apricot Brandy II" and "Wanderer" successfully merge the two in a sea of delayed strings and gentle electronic textures.

Review: Boof! Another RSD 2015 corker! This collaboration between the great Roedelius Schneider and Schneider Kacirek (yes, we know, it's quite a mouthful!) is comprised of all unreleased material from the legendary Bureau B recording sessions - which resulted in the pioneering "Tiden" and "Stunden" masterpieces - and is downright essential material for anyone who even flirts with the idea of being into ambient and drone music, let alone electronic music as a whole! The first three cuts on the A-side are by Roedelius himself, a gorgeous weave of electro-acoustic delight containing wonky piano keys and plenty of electronic manipulation and fluttering. On the B-side, Kacirek's three songs are equally as deep and visceral, but also wonderfully cutting-edge for the time...intricate blends of percussion and instrumentation culminate into a truly abstract and yet enthralling journey into sound design.

Review: This is a brilliantly insightful records for fans of Conrad Schnitzler. It captures the German experimental musician with fellow spirit Wolfgang Seidel at Peter Baumann's Paragon Studio laying down the sort of sounds that formed his vital trio of 1970s albums - Con, Con 3 and Cpnsequenz. Moody electronics abounds with distant solar pads, belying aline life forms and a real sesne of unknown futures all imbued deep within this music. Some are purely ambient, some coalesce into rhythm pieces over grubby modulations and others are soundtracks to imaginary dystopian films.

Review: The boys and girls at Bureau B are having huge amounts of fun exploring the vast archives of the late, great Conrad Schnitzler. Last year, they were handed two tapes labelled "Filmmusik" by the German electronic experimentalist's good friend, Wolfgang Seidel. They released the first of these, containing tracks recorded between 1974 and '75, last year. This second volume contains hypnotic, mind-altering material recorded in 1976, and mostly comprises inspired workouts that, in hindsight, feel like a blueprint for what would later become techno. That Schnitzler could create such masterpieces with rudimentary modular synthesizers, drum machines and tape loops is testament to his genius. The most impressive track of all is the final one, a haunting, percussive, 23-minute epic recorded in 1978.

Review: The latest artist to delve into Conrad Schnitzler's vast archive of synthesizer sounds and Con-Struct new tracks is Pole, AKA dub-tronica stalwart Stefan Betke. In the liner notes, Betke admits to never warming to Schnitzler's brand of synthesizer experimentalism, despite respecting the German pioneer's vast body of work. Yet despite these misgivings, Betke has produced an impressive set which melds some of Schnitzler's trademark electronics - woozy, evocative, out-there and occasionally hugely challenging - with his own glitch-heavy rhythms and dub techno inspired textures. The result is a collection of finely tuned tracks that effortlessly joins the dots between 1970s electronica, '90s IDM, and Betke's distinctly dub-wise production style.

Review: Since his death four years ago, Conrad Schnitzler has been revisited in many different forms, from reinterpretations of his work by various artists to posthumous collaborations, which is where this release loosely falls. Pyrolator's Kurt Dahlke has little more he needs to prove in German electronic music, but here he lets rip with the archive of Schnitzler's sounds at his disposal, and so he sets about weaving dense, evocative experiences that range from clamouring synth layers to crafty percussive arrangements such as "287-13". With a diverse set of results from these experiments, Dalkhe breathes a very different kind of life in Schnitzler's sounds and that's a most worthwhile venture for a late music pioneer to be a part of.

Review: Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Conrad Schnitzler did more than almost anyone else to broaden the horizons of experimental electronic music in Germany. He inspired a huge number of producers from the country to blur the boundaries between art and music. One of those was Thomas Fehlmann - perhaps best known for his work with The Orb - who here puts together a collection of his favourite Schnitzler pieces. Focusing mostly on the early 1980s - known as Schnitzler's "White Period" - Fehlmann has cannily sequenced and lightly mixed the tracks to create an hypnotic, intoxicating fusion of out-there electronica, proto-techno, minimal wave experiments and post-punk oddities. It makes for enchanting, unusual listening.

Review: Solyst is the solo project of Thomas Klein, drummer in German post rock outfit Kreidler who has released two albums previous to this one, both on esteemed German label Bureau B. The album covers a broad sonic spectrum that seems to take influence from many style not limited to IDM and ambient through to dub techno. According to Bureau B, Klein utilised an abandoned piano as the main source of sound by amplifying various treatments to the wooden body and steel strings which created source material he then fed into his sampler. Klein even designed his own custom drum kit for the album, comprised for metallic and wooden found materials. There are some brilliantly inspired tracks on here equally of use to dancefloors as they are for home listening on headphones. We really enjoyed the faint EBM inflections of "Eulenflug" or "Nostalghia", the exotic industrialism of the title track or "Catching Leafs" or the just plain dark electronic experiments of "Steamfield" and Atomium" which in particular showcased the textural sound abrasions that Klein executed on the album just perfectly. Highly recommended.

Review: Club scene doyen, dance music veteran, and rave culture hero Johannes Auvinen opts to depart from the dance floor, at least for the time being, and deliver Arles - an ode to the other side of the electronic-acid scene, those sounds that make most sense after the chaos and carnage of a party have subsided and you're safely home on the couch with you and yours and all dearest.
And it works as well as it should, with the experience both of living in that world and making anthems for it clearly evident in the overall production quality and ideas. Arles is a warm blanket, that friendly therapist, an album that understands where you've been because it was there too. Remarkably, despite what that may suggest, this is not ambient or particularly leftfield stuff. Instead, it's rhythmic, pop-infused electronica goodness, for want of a more succinct, less awkward turn of phrase.

Now based in Paris after leaving Dussledorf, he heads in something of a new direction and brings heavy yet velvet sounds which replace the rawness of his earlier work. Tracks on Leave Me Alone bring razor-sharp rhythms to drifting cosmic melodies, there are slow and industrial drones and haunting pads, a signature sense of drum funk and much more besides. This is a great new sound for an artist always on the move.

Review: Given how prolific Detlef Weinrich was earlier in his career, we were rather surprised to learn that Jumping Dead Leafs? is his first solo album as Tolouse Low Tracks for almost six years. In keeping with his work to date, much of the gently mind-altering material on show blurs the boundaries between styles, with Weinrich variously offering up trippy, post hip-hop hypnotism ('Berrytone Souvenir'), sludgy dystopian beat-scapes ('The Incomprehensible Image', the jaunty and unusual title track), slow-burn ambient dub ('Inverted Sea'), exceedingly spaced-out dub-tronica ('Milk in Water'), and pedal-steel laden early morning eccentricity ('Sales Pitch'). While hard to pigeonhole, it's an excellent album, with Weinrich striking a perfect balance between challenging sounds, heady grooves and wavy, ear-pleasing instrumentation.

Review: German record label Bureau B have compiled 70s and 80s German electro-punk, trance, breakbeat and more into the first volume of their Silberland series, a self-contained post-war world of counter-culture German underground that was on the bleeding-edge of sound. The avant-garde and floor-fillers collide in a showcase of collaborative spirit from the country at the time, trying to fill a cultural void that the war left. Expect cosmic synth passages, ritualistic electronic grooves in this delve into psychedelia expressed only in the metallic beeps and bumping bass of the Komische scene. It's cerebral and slightly uncanny in its thought-provoking approach that is crucially German, if not that of a Sega Mega Drive soundtrack.

Review: It has been two years since the first 'Sowas Von Egal' compilation arrived courtesy of Hamburg label Bureau B and Hamburg party series Damaged Goods. The world is unrecognisable compared to then, but diving headfirst into a bunch of obscure tracks from one of Europe's countercultural epicentres, recorded during one of the country's most troubled but fascinating and creative periods, is still a wonderful experience. While tracks here veer from having one foot in indie punk to full blown electronic assaults, the energy levels are consistent throughout - in short, they all pack a punch, whether it's the runaway juggernaut of Vono's 'Fred Der Ritter' or the frenzied looped bleeps on 'Steig Den Luis Trenker' by 4712. Similarly, with distortions, fizzes, crackles and all manner of other audible DIY tells, it's hard to argue with the fact that everything here puts artistry first and foremost, giving commerciality short shrift.

Review: Richard von der Schulenburg is the much loved resident DJ at the Golden Pudel club in Hamburg and he has been since 2005. He makes disco, house and techno but is also an ambient craftsman with a new age disposition. Bureau B snap him up here for nine tracks of lush and melodic electronic music that is detailed and engaging. There are gentle xylophone sounds on the opener, while 'Caravan Of The Pentamatics' gets more mystic and otherworldly with its curious leads. 'DX7s Broken Hearts' is the sound of a machine in love and 'Planet Dragon' pairs edgy synth sounds with gypsy beats.
