Review: Disco producer, synthesizer pioneer and Hi-NRG originator Patrick Cowley made a lot of highly sexual music. In fact, his muscular synth-disco productions were, for years, the soundtrack of choice in San Francisco's notorious bathhouse scene. It doesn't stop there, though. Unbeknownst to most disco aficionados, Cowley also provided experimental synthesizer tracks to soundtrack gay porn films between 1973 and 1981. Initially released on vinyl last year, School Daze has now been granted a CD edition by Dark Entries and gathers together the best of those productions. Arguably, the material here is amongst his best work. Free of the constraints of the dancefloor, Cowley let himself go, delivering avant garde synthesizer compositions that ranged from spaciously psychedelic ("Out of Body", like some lost Confused House record) and decidedly cosmic (the chugging "Journey Home"), to otherworldly and outlandish ("Zygote"). Recommended.

Review: Based on the novel written by Australian actor Roger Ward ("Mad Max", "Stone", "Turkey Shoot"), "The Set" was a highly controversial film upon its release in 1970, its attitudes towards sexuality challenging the traditional mores of the mainstream society. The film, now regarded as a lost piece of Australian genre cinema, is considered the precursor to the Oz Sex-Wave films of the following decade such as "Fantasm", "Libido", "Naked Bunyip" and "Felicity". Scored by the highly respected and unique jazz original Sven Libaek, the music has also been unjustly overlooked from any recent focus on Australian cinema.

After scoring several television scores and documentaries in the 1960s ("Nature Walkabout", "To Ride A White Horse", "Man And A Mural"), "The Set" was Libaek's first commission to score a feature film soundtrack. Incorporating elements of baroque and sunshine pop as well as moody mod jazz, "The Set" is an incredible time-piece of Swinging Sydney. Featuring Libaek regulars and top rank Australian jazz players Don Burrows, John Sangster and Errol Buddie, this long forgotten but classic soundtrack has now been fully restored and presented again in all its original glory.

Including rare photos, original newspaper cuttings and extensive liner notes from Australian cult cinema expert & Mu Meson archive curator Jaimie Leonarder.

Review: Given his innate ability to craft intensely atmospheric and often fundamentally unsettling music, it seems apt that Thom Yorke has finally got around to producing a film soundtrack. It's fitting, too, that said soundtrack is for Luca Guadagnino's weirdo remake of 1977 Italian horror flick "Suspiria". Yorke nails the brief, delivering a string of chilling, otherworldly instrumentals that not only draw on his well-established love of dark ambient and gruesome electronica, but also foreboding neo-classical movements and sparse, wide-eyed arrangements. There are a smattering of superb vocal moments, too, with recent single "Suspirio" - described by one broadsheet reviewer as "the saddest waltz you'll ever here" - standing out.
