Snowblind (Record Store Day 2014) (limited coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: BB 169. Rel: 02 May 14
  1. Automat - "Berlin Wall" (feat Genesis Breyer P-Orridge)
  2. Automat - "MTY"
  3. Automat - "CUL"
  4. Kreidler - "Snowblind"
  5. Kreidler - "Escaped"
Review: Kreidler and Automat have unconsciously kept the Krautrock heritage alive, with both sets of outfits mystically blending more traditional instruments together with nutty electronic twerkings. For their Record Store Day special, they've joined forces with Genesis P-Orridge, formerly of Throbbing Gristle, and have given us a magnetic split release. Automat's tracks are mechanical but nonetheless organic in texture, rendered even more fragile by P-Orridge's trademark rantings. Kreidler, on the other hand, go for a more classic approach, where electronic guitars are twisted and turned into an absolute frenzy amid slicing drum breaks and subtle electronic manipulations. Needless to say, this is a strong release from Bureau B.

Review: Repetitive, minimal avant-garde electronic music from the underground of Berlin. Ludwig Papenberg and Johannes Vester founded Alu in 1980 after the psychedelic group Sand. The following year, they released the single "Please Wait!". Although Alu came from the Berlin 'Kassettenuntergrund', it was a more brittle sound not too dissimilar from British bands of the time like like Nocturnal Emissions or Cabaret Voltaire. A group shake-up meant the addition of singer Nadja Molt and while internally marked as the second phase of the group. No studio recordings were released and the group appeared only at concerts, documented on two live LPs and in 192 Papenberg left, with Vester and Molt forming Alu III. In the accompanying text of their 1983 release Spiritual Renewal, they wrote: 'Our work lies in, where possible, storing a lot of sounds and rhythmic structures in synthesizers and rhythm machines to be released freely in concert. Texts and singing are also spontaneous inspirations.'

Review: On their two previous albums, Automat showcased a hard-to-pigeonhole sound that gleefully fused elements of dub, electronica, krautrock, post-punk and '80s industrial. Ostwest explores similar sonic territory, with the German trio making use of both live instrumentation (electric bass, slack-tuned drums, Fender Rhodes electric piano) and drowsy electronics. The resultant tracks flit between ghostly downtempo soundscapes (see the luscious "Yuko" and dub-wise "Tempelhof") and more energetic, low-slung cuts, with occasional surprises thrown in (see the Afro-tinged tribal workout that draws the album to a close, "Transit"). As usual, it's tricky to pigeonhole, but rarely less than hugely entertaining.

Review: Off The Record sees German label Bureau B offer up a wonderful presentation of music from ex Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos. Apparently originally conceived whilst Bartos was part of the iconic group, these twelve tracks have been fully developed from the musical diary he kept all those years ago. What was initially a secret collection of rhythms, riffs, hooks, chords and melodies have been reconceived and re-contextualised by Bartos in a modern setting and Off The Record should make for compelling listening for the legions of Kraftwerk completists out there. "The Binary Code" stands out, a swooping array of 8bit arpeggios unfurling and taking your senses with you whilst "Musica Ex Machina" is the sort of chugging, busy vocoder led machine funk you'd feasibly hear in a Weatherall back to back set with Smagghe

Review: Dorothea Raukes' Deutsche Wertabeit project is one of those Kraut LP's which have been painfully overlooked through the years. The Streetmark band member's solo project was comprised solely of Korg equipment and very singular sorts of power electronics. What's particularly impressive is Raukes' ability to create a sense of movement from nothing but floating keys and whispy pads - check "Unter Tage" for a taste - taking you in a deep and meditative head-space. For fans of Roedelius and the rest of the throng.

Review: Moebius & Tietchens presents something very special indeed - two of the greats of German avant-garde music coming together for a collaborative record. Asmus Tietchens has been active in the realms of music concrete and abstract music for many years, while Dieter Moebius is known for his work as a member of Cluster and Harmonia. The results are just as experimental as you would expect, going from the plucked loops of "Kattrepel", through the radiophonic abstractions of "Vincent", the swampy proto-techno of "Raboisen" and the heavily industrial textures of "Grimm", its every bit as inquisitive as you would expect from these two minds.

Uberfallig (180 gram vinyl LP)
Cat: BB 96LP. Rel: 12 Jul 12
  1. Puls
  2. In Der Zeit
  3. Apricot Brandy II
  4. Wanderer
Review: Gunter Schickert was roadie and assistant to German cosmiche pioneer Klaus Schulze, and as such was exposed much of the experimental sounds of the 70s. Bureau B have seen fit to reissue his 1979 album Uberfallig, undoubtedly a lost gem of the era. "Puls" owes an obvious debt to Schulze, rippling as it does on a wave of arpeggios, but the folky "In Der Zeit" has echoes of Nick Drake. "Apricot Brandy II" and "Wanderer" successfully merge the two in a sea of delayed strings and gentle electronic textures.

  5. Schneider Kacirek - "Tired Resistance" (4:14)
  6. Schneider Kacirek - "Elements Objects" (4:08)
Review: Boof! Another RSD 2015 corker! This collaboration between the great Roedelius Schneider and Schneider Kacirek (yes, we know, it's quite a mouthful!) is comprised of all unreleased material from the legendary Bureau B recording sessions - which resulted in the pioneering "Tiden" and "Stunden" masterpieces - and is downright essential material for anyone who even flirts with the idea of being into ambient and drone music, let alone electronic music as a whole! The first three cuts on the A-side are by Roedelius himself, a gorgeous weave of electro-acoustic delight containing wonky piano keys and plenty of electronic manipulation and fluttering. On the B-side, Kacirek's three songs are equally as deep and visceral, but also wonderfully cutting-edge for the time...intricate blends of percussion and instrumentation culminate into a truly abstract and yet enthralling journey into sound design.

Review: The latest artist to delve into Conrad Schnitzler's vast archive of synthesizer sounds and Con-Struct new tracks is Pole, AKA dub-tronica stalwart Stefan Betke. In the liner notes, Betke admits to never warming to Schnitzler's brand of synthesizer experimentalism, despite respecting the German pioneer's vast body of work. Yet despite these misgivings, Betke has produced an impressive set which melds some of Schnitzler's trademark electronics - woozy, evocative, out-there and occasionally hugely challenging - with his own glitch-heavy rhythms and dub techno inspired textures. The result is a collection of finely tuned tracks that effortlessly joins the dots between 1970s electronica, '90s IDM, and Betke's distinctly dub-wise production style.

Review: Since his death four years ago, Conrad Schnitzler has been revisited in many different forms, from reinterpretations of his work by various artists to posthumous collaborations, which is where this release loosely falls. Pyrolator's Kurt Dahlke has little more he needs to prove in German electronic music, but here he lets rip with the archive of Schnitzler's sounds at his disposal, and so he sets about weaving dense, evocative experiences that range from clamouring synth layers to crafty percussive arrangements such as "287-13". With a diverse set of results from these experiments, Dalkhe breathes a very different kind of life in Schnitzler's sounds and that's a most worthwhile venture for a late music pioneer to be a part of.

Review: Solyst is the solo project of Thomas Klein, drummer in German post rock outfit Kreidler who has released two albums previous to this one, both on esteemed German label Bureau B. The album covers a broad sonic spectrum that seems to take influence from many style not limited to IDM and ambient through to dub techno. According to Bureau B, Klein utilised an abandoned piano as the main source of sound by amplifying various treatments to the wooden body and steel strings which created source material he then fed into his sampler. Klein even designed his own custom drum kit for the album, comprised for metallic and wooden found materials. There are some brilliantly inspired tracks on here equally of use to dancefloors as they are for home listening on headphones. We really enjoyed the faint EBM inflections of "Eulenflug" or "Nostalghia", the exotic industrialism of the title track or "Catching Leafs" or the just plain dark electronic experiments of "Steamfield" and Atomium" which in particular showcased the textural sound abrasions that Klein executed on the album just perfectly. Highly recommended.
