  2. Idealist - "Why Did You Come Here" (8:07)
  3. Thomas Wood - "Rough Road" (5:37)
  4. Christoph Schindling - "Most Important" (8:22)
Review: Swiss label Idealistmusic return with another fine various artists EP: the first since 2015's edition which brought us great stuff from SCSI-9, Pablo Mateo and Idealist himself. For the label's ninth edition, they serve up some tough tribal deep house by fellow Swiss deepness purveyors Baaz of Office Recordings whose contribution "Burgundy" is emotive as ever. Thomas Wood's "Rough Road" is classic deep house informed by a healthy love of classic Chicago sounds by Larry Heard or Chris Gray. On the flip, Christoph Schindling's contribution "Most Important" is a summery and hypnotic groove awash in tape saturation and lo-fi aesthetics; its spanglish melodies working some real magic over its strict electro beat.

Cat: MEC 031. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Eletricidade (8:04)
  2. Espirito Das Maquinas (7:47)
Review: You could say that Kodiak Bachine is Brazil's greatest ever Brazilian electronic producer. That would not be an overstatement, it's just a simple fact. It was 1982 when he first released this EP, and it's been a classic, and a favourite of ours, ever since. In fact, "Electricidade" is so powerful because it sounds like it could have been made today; its tenebrous synths filling the airwaves from every angle, giving the track a strange sensation of lust and wonder. The flip, "Espirito Das Maquinas", is another enchanting ride through broken electric cables and abandoned power plants, a place where Bachine clearly thrives and surpasses all expectations. Highly recommend reissue!

  1. Lockdown (9:08)
  2. Relapse '83 (6:05)
  3. Mind Unit Theory (6:33)
  4. Energy Theme (5:38)
Review: This attractive 12" marks a welcome return to Bahnsteig23 for rising star Kris Baha. In keeping with the label's decidedly off-kilter approach, the EP's four tracks variously draw influence from krautrock, post-punk disco, industrial, EBM and wonky, arpeggio-heavy Italo-disco. We're particularly enjoying the stretched-out, dub-wise drug-chug of opener "Lockdown", though the gently bubbling industrial funk and hard-wired dancefloor throb of "Relapse '83" and undulating, dubbed-out Italo flex of "Mind Unit Theory" are both quietly impressive. Closer "Energy Theme", an acid-fried slab of weirdo electro in the vein of Mark Stewart circa 1984, is also rather good.

Review: Kris Baha is fast becoming one of the most essential operators in the deviant disco underbelly of Berlin's scene, despite having landed in the city relatively recently. Baha's credentials with labels like Power Station and parties in Melbourne are all that you need to know, and now this release on the ever mighty Cocktail d'Amore seals the deal. Baha has never sounded more confident, pinging deviant synths around nasty drum bite and channeling the gods of industrial darkness to make some rugged body music for the darker kind of dancefloor. The experimental, non-party tracks are just as wild, dealing in all manner of uncompromising noise to further Baha's journey to the upper realms of sonic mud slingers.

Review: Tolga Baklacioglu's releases may not be all that frequent, but when they do arrive they're always worth a listen. Your Secret Face is his first outing of 2018 and sees him join forces fast-rising Russian artist Dee Grinski. The latter's stylish - and heavily distorted - spoken word vocals can be heard on the EP's opening and closing tracks, with the latter - an 11-minute experimental epic that could feasibly soundtrack nuclear Armageddon - also benefitting from her drowsy, improvised singing. No doubt she contributed heavily to the EP's instrumental cuts, too, which are bleak, fuzzy and industrial in the best possible way.

Review: Minimal Wave presents a 4 song 7" EP by legendary German band Bal Pare. The band was formed in 1980 by Kirsten Klemm, Manfred Asmus and Matthias Schuster. Schuster, the brainchild behind the band, is also known for these projects: Geisterfahrer, Im Namen Des Volkes, Jeanette Und Das Land Z, and Das Institut. The four songs were recorded between 1981-1984 and are all previously unreleased. The songs range from really original, danceable dark synth with an early industrial feel to warmer synth pop, the last song featuring Kirsten on vocals. On colored vinyl with a hand silk screened heavy card stock jacket, a beautiful release, limited to 600 numbered copies.

  2. Tour (6:40)
  3. Seize-Sept (6:09)
Review: Former 50Weapons regular Bambounou (real name Jeremy Guindo-Zegiestowski) was last seen dishing up Afro-fired tribal techno on Disk last summer. Here he joins the growing roster of top talents signed to Nic Tasker's effervescent Whities label. All three tracks on offer hit the spot, with pulsing A-side "Temple" - an alluring mixture of drum machine polyrhythms, metallic electronic melodies and glitchy electronics - beautifully setting the tone for what's to come. "Tour" is an arguably more out-there - and certainly weightier - chunk of late night broken techno, while "Seize-Sept" sees the Parisian producer layering bleeping melodies over a spaced-out deep techno groove.

  1. Dernier Metro (5:23)
  2. Kosovo Hardcore (6:01)
  3. VVVVV (8:57)
Review: At first glance, French enfant terrible Bambounou is a surprising addition to the Diskant impint - now known as just Disk. Known for his techno and house exploits on Clek Clek Boom and 50 Weapons, his knack for intricately programmed rhythms were on display even back then. It kind of figures that he'd be a good choice for the label, come to think of it now. That's certainly proven across the three tracks on the Parametr Perkusja EP, where his sound sits comfortably alongside label mates like Harmonious Thelonious and Durian Brothers. From the slo-mo esoterica of "Dernier Metro" which reaches near tribal moments, the hard hitting polyrhythmic techno of "Kosovo Hardcore" it is great to hear some original productions from him after lengthy absence.

  1. A-Seite 1-5 (14:30)
  2. If She Says She Is A Healer, She Is A Healer (9:20)
Review: Off the back that recent appearance for the illustrious Hinge Finger label run by Joy Orbison and Will Bankhead, techno deviant Barnt returns with a magnetic, and inimitably loose, 12" for the imperceptible Holger imprint. We love the material that these guys put out, and this EP from Barnt feels like exactly the right territory for the label to explore. "A-Seite 1-5" opts for the beatless approach, immersing us into an open-world of minimalistic pads shifting and moulding into one another in a subtle sort of trance - excellent. The more representative Barnt flex comes through on the B-side via "If She Says She Is a Healer, She Is A Healer", a cold, mesmerising techno bullet with a strange, twisted armoury of explorative synths recalling the Middle East. That's what it sounds like to us, anyway, but that's exactly what Barnt's music does; its vibe is ever-shifting, always in a state of flux and, of course, highly recommended.

  1. Sometimes The Only Way Out Is To Go Further In

  3. Faster Than The Speed Of Love
  4. Neon Black & Vulcane
Review: London's Public Information are experts in the art of surprise. With artists like Austin Cesear and Katie Gately on their roster, one would never really expect to have Bass Clef turn up on there in full effect. While his sound is always pretty diverse, this is possibly one of his finest EPs yet, where techno, bass and house are all mashed up in a tasty cocktail of glitchy beats and hazy snares. "Sometimes The Only Way Out Is To Go Further In" is a jam you'd listen to for hours, whereas "Elsewhen" is a lot more lo-fi but nonetheless filled with odd melodies and nasty acid squelches. On the flip, "Faster Than The Speed Of Love" verges to almost electro levels, while "Neon Black & Vulcane" is the oddball of the lot. Broken beats, aqueous melodies and some great FX trickery. Sublime.

  6. Sentiment Oceanique (6:28)
Review: Brothers From Different Mothers stalwart Basses Terres is a producer to whom easy categorization cannot be applied. For example, on his 2016 debut, he rushed between a quartet of experimental techno, leftfield and electronica excursions, while 2017's "Counting Pulsations" cassette was a druggy trip rich in ambient, dub and "dungeon synth" flavours. So what's on offer here? More intoxicating, otherworldly concoctions, that's what. Highlights include the dark tropical ambient of "665 Moths", the dubbed-out post-dancehall weightiness of "Wilfred Doricent", the slipped and spacey electronica of "Deliae" and the fluid dreaminess of gently percussive closing cut "Sentiment Oceanique".

Review: Sweden's Bauri Martin Abrahamsson returns to B12's FireScope imprint for the second part in the Vinkelvolten series. Under the alias Bauri, Abrahamsson has been creating various shades of techno over the last two decades for labels as diverse as Sloboda, Random Island and Drumcode. More evocative sonic tales await you on this fine EP, from chilled and beat driven daydream fantasies such as "Hertsi" or "Cocoon" through to the sombre glacial minimalism of "Wobbly Rhodes" or captivating IDM journeys like "Tuesday Dreaming" reminiscent of Boards Of Canada.

Review: For their latest No 'Label' release, Rush Hour has turned to "Brussels-based Prince of modern psychedelic electronics" Bear Bones, Lay Low, a prolific producer who has been delivering intriguing, synthesizer-based curiosities on obscure labels for well over a decade. Hacia La Luz begins with the trippy, Tangerine Dream-in-space swirl of "Lightning Eyelids", before heading to the rainforest with Timothy Leary and Terrence McKenna via the hallucinatory drums and humid electronics of "Jewelled Selva Mating Rites". Psychedelic synthesizer lines, exotic melodies and starburst electronics come to the fore on the album's other three tracks, with the magic mushrooms-in-Goa trip of "Crystal Poppies" standing out.

Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Cat: LTNC 008. Rel: 05 Jul 16
  1. Cera Persa 1 (10:33)
  2. Cera Persa 2 (9:30)
Review: Electronic experimentalist Andrea Belfi has always been hard-to-pin down, with his use of a dizzying array of aliases reflecting his desire to flit between different styles. Cera Persa is a rare outing under his given name, and offers two contrasting riffs on the same dystopian, end-of-days theme. The creepy A-side "Cera Persa 1" sits somewhere between apocalyptic, slack-tuned experimental jazz, horror influenced ambient, and undeniably deep and dark techno. On the flip, Belfi attempts to explore even murkier pastures, with dislocated drum hits, effects-laden electronics and ghostly melodies combining to send shivers down the spine. It's pretty out there stuff, all told, but also strangely alluring.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Through his glittering catalogue for Public Possession, Bell Towers has proven himself to be a leading light in contemporary house that packs personality and class to match its club dynamics. His irreverent humour comes out in droves on "I'm Moving To Berlin", which thumps with the '80s-tinged energy he does so well. "Sexual Intruder Alert" actually sees the BT sound edge a little more towards techno, perhaps appropriate given the subject matter of the EP, and then "Approach & Identify" takes things in a tense, sleazy direction that jacks with a rawness you could imagine Ron Hardy going absolutely apeshit for.
