  8. I Scream - "Take Your Headphones & Dance!" (2:42)
Review: A record entitled 'Insane 80s Tracks From The Insane Label' was never going to be boring. Talk about living up to the name, Insane Music means an experimental cassette label from Belgium, managed by Alain Neffe and founded in 1981. He makes music as I Scream, and to put that into wider context his two tracks on this vinyl excursion are harsh distortions with distant bumbling rhythms, and relentless rolls of acid warble and snares the likes of which techno would kill for. That's far from that, though. Pseudo Code present the most accessible stuff here, and that comes in the form of a twisted child of post punk and garage synth pop, veering from the wonderfully bouncy and danceable 'Waiting For Zorro', to the runaway anxiety of 'Jesus!'. Bene Gesserit goes for what David Lynch might do with disco and garage rock, while Human Flesh present a staggeringly effective cacophony of brass refrains.

  5. Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung - "Tunnel Visjon" (5:31)
  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

  4. Gravity (3:59)
Review: William J.Youngman's Headless Horseman project has created a new and exciting techno sound that was only an offshoot of EBM and industrial in years past. Stepping out of his own imprint, the dark horseman lands on Tommy Four Seven's excellent 47 label, tearing through the speakers from the get-go thanks to the toxic sounds of "Revelation", and the even nastier sway of "Concussion". Metallic and hard-nosed in absolutely every way, "Locust" follows up on that with a menacing pounce of beats and cavernous bass, while "Gravity" breaks the techno groove for something much more in line with the likes of Powell's Diagonal output. Big boy sounds.

Review: Fresh from marking his return to wax with a limited edition dose of experimental jazz on 2 Headed Deer, Antonio Marini AKA Healing Force Project delivers a mini-album that joins the dots between that freewheeling style and his usual leftfield electronica, feverish ambient and mutilated techno. Compositionally, "Sideral Escape" is rather interesting, with Marini combining chopped and looped recordings of jazz instrumentation (double bass, drums, screeching guitars), with outer-space electronics, sparse drum machine beats, broken computer sounds and an impending sense of doom. It's hard to accurately describe, let alone pigeonhole, but that's no criticism; in fact, it's what makes it such an intriguing and enjoyable listen.

  1. Day Three (7:50)
  2. Day Five (7:42)
  3. Day Seven (3:00)
Review: Matthew Herbert has been busy dropping reissues of his most treasured house gems from the '90s, but let's not forget he's more focused on experimental pastures these days. Foom clearly know, and what better label to carry some intriguing electro-acoustic interplays from the maverick marvel? These pieces were all the product of a week-long residency in Berlin, recorded in front of (and sometimes with the participation of) an audience, and they veer from the bouncing synthesized freakery of "Day Three" to the clangorous baroque composition of "Day Five" and then the minimal experimentation of "Day Seven". There's still no one that does it like Herbert.

  5. Exit (Kris Baha remix) (8:29)
Review: Lyon's Julien Viallet, only recently baptised under the HLM38 moniker, lands with his debut EP for France's KUMP label, making it the imprint's second EP to date. Representative of the cultural shift that has taken France over nowadays, "Illicite Song" is a wonderfully dextrous blend of Eastern chimes and slow, meandering beat music that only subtly references techno or house. "French Dudu" is a little more tech-friendly, albeit grounded in the same form of percussive experimentation, while "Exit" references the sounds of bands like Throbbing Gristle, spewing industrial oddities from every orifice. Remixes come from Front De Cadeaux and Kris Baha, respectively, dropping yet more additive rhythms to the collection. Recommended!

Triangle Folds
K7
Cat: K7 261EP. Rel: 20 May 10
  1. Triangle Folds (DJ-Kicks)
  2. Triangle Folds Inside Out
Review: Border Community head honcho, James Holden has always maintained a kind of DJ free spirit which has enabled him to work outside the usual constraints of techno as we know it. This, alongside his dedication to new production talent has made him the perfect choice to compile the next instalment of !K7’s long serving DJ Kicks series. Out later this month, the compilation is, as usual, accompanied by a single from the UK producer. "Triangle Folds" is Holden’s first release in four years yet still feels like a logical progression from his last effort, 2006’s debut The Idiots Are Winning.

Using his extensive modular synth collection to mould tripping mid-tempo sequences which sway, bobble and bounce with Holden’s typical lushness and acute sense of melody, "Triangle Folds" has a delicate but unmistakably danceable feel to it. The track is a glittering combination of analogue synths arpeggios and buzzing drum pads that tick away in their own inimitable and curious rhythm patterns. These rhythms are loose and have a live feel, typical of Holden’s trademark sound, as are the quirky time signatures. His ultra detailed approach to techno once again manifests itself here, so much so that it’s 115 bpm pace would even refrain many from even calling it techno. B-side, the "Inside Out" version is even more unconventional, slowing things down yet more and turning proceedings into a folk tinged, psychedelic tambourine Schaffel rework. Focusing on the sounds and atmospheres that surround the slowly pulsating beats, we are left with an intoxicating mix of arpeggiated bass and trickling synth lines. Both tracks show James Holden at his individual, unconventional and wonderful best. It is his ability to avoid dance music’s most tired clichés, as once again proved here, that makes James Holden the singular producer that he is.

Long Weekend EP

  2. Sunday (10:53)
  3. Tuesday (feat Jakub Ziolek) (5:34)
  4. Wednesday (feat Jakub Ziolek) (5:40)
Review: UK-Polish duo Holden & Zimpel return with more adventures in Kraut-jazz-techno, if that's even a thing. The description certainly makes sense on 'Saturday', which opens the scoring here on a tip that is at once informed by Underground Resistance, drone-y avant-garde and something with flutes. Starting as it means to go on, to say the least. From there we run through days of the week in order to 'Wednesday', making this one of the longest weekends we can think of in some time. 'Sunday''s distorted strings sounding almost like a strange species communicating via fraught noises. 'Tuesday' is more rhythmically balanced, almost risking coming close to more standard electronica as its melodies reach ever higher, before the final number closes out with an air of euphoria and subtle drive.

  5. Sons Of Traders - "The Smile Of The Body" (6:01)
Review: The third instalment in the Allstars series from Frigio is another selection of murky sonics from a freaky underworld. The opener is a dark trip into intense and underlapping drum grooves and molten synths that crashes from one loop to the next. The rickety drums of 'Bruxism' come with a classic Moby sample that sets it on fire and Negocius Man take us into a world of surveillance and subversion with their tripped out designs and malfunctioning machine sounds. Sons Of Traders offer the most depraved of the lot with a track that is suitably terrifying as the haunting season approaches.

Luminous Spaces
Cat: RUG 1100T. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Luminous Spaces (7:06)
  2. Luminous Beings (11:53)
Review: Virtuoso musician Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens are a perfect compliment for each other on their new EP for Domino. Both are leaders in their field and used to exploring outside the usual lines, which is what they do here. "Luminous Spaces" was meant to be an Owens remix of a track from Hopkins' 2018 album SIngularity but instead she recorded new synths and vocals for it. The result is sparkling bit of melodic and astral techno that gets you lost in the lushness as you sink ever further into a trance. "Luminous Beings" is a deeper anymore thoughtful vision that makes a different but equally real impact.

Review: Horton Jupiter has been skirting around various cosmically-inclined outfits for many years now, but this release marks his first outright solo venture, and where better for it to blast off from than the celestial circus sideshow of Bahnsteig 23? The record launches in a fit of kosmische bravado, all nagging arpeggios, warbling leads, sustained guitars and a healthy dose of drama. "Eclectic Day" is certainly a fitting title. "Smokin' The Roach" is an equally bombastic affair, although with a chirpier disposition and some Italian-sounding vocals, and then "The Box" finishes the EP off with a grungy trip through bongo beatdowns and fuzz guitar for those who like their psych music with a vintage twist.

Review: While every self-respecting electro fan will know the 1988 anthem 'Stakker Humanoid', less people will have spent time diving into the back catalogue of Brian Dougans - AKA Humanoid, AKA one half of acid house and rave veterans Future Sound of London. That's a shame, considering the genius at play across everything this moniker has touched. The latest addition to that oeuvre is no exception. Coming more than 30 years after that debut none of the vitality or essence that first blew us away has been lost. Eyes firmly set on the future, then, everything on this release finds a spot on some sci-fi dancefloor or other. Whether that's the frequency distortions and eerie, cavernous melodies of 'Turned', the waviness of 'Logique Abstract' or the unabashed ravey-ness of 'The Words of the Elders'.
