Video games had a bumper year, and it didn't take long for the historic relationship between computer entertainment and contemporary musical compositions to start finding favour with content-starved editorial teams.
They say there's no turning back, ever, and as such the smart money is on albums like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice not just becoming more commonplace, but taken more seriously going forward. Review: Given that he's been delivering DIY releases as Kitchen Cynics since the late 1980s, it can be to know where to start with Alan Davidson's vast back catalogue. Happily, the Trilogy Tapes has come up with a solution: Beads Upon an Abacus, a career retrospective compiled by Jack Murphy that offers an excellent introduction to the Aberdeen-based artist's distinctive work. It's well worth checking, too, because Davidson's trademark style -a lo-fi and hissing blend of rudimentary electronics, hazy folk revivalism, layered guitar-scapes and oddly traditional instrument choices - is never less than invigorating, alluring and hugely entertaining. If you've yet to bathe in his unique musical explorations, don't sleep on this fine compilation.

This soundtrack accompanies the anime's key moment in which Dragon Ball Z resumes five years after Son Goku's wedding. Radditz, a mysterious warrior, arrives on Earth to find Goku, who learns that he comes from a planet of warriors from a planet of warriors, of which only four remain. The plot is based on a succession of increasingly strong opponents to be fought, but there's often a quest or travel motif that adds interest beyond the duels. All this, and more, is bolstered by this electrifying soundtrack edition.

I've loved his music since I first heard his album "wake" on Own Records, and he has released some lovely music on Lost Tribe Sound, Dronarivm and Gailur Records. On his fifth full length release, kj departs from the hypnotic refrains of his earlier work in favour of the limitless expanses and mysteries of the cosmos, particularly exemplified by the ebb and flow of the 19 minute track "silverine" and the gorgeous orchestral closing track "waters".

Review: When he ran into the enigmatic Klaus Nomi, David Bowie met his match. At least in so far as wildly extravagant styles and ideas go. That's no discredit to the legacy of Britain's lost icon, more a case that his sometime East German musical partner, who died in1983, was similarly Not Of This World. Find the footage of them performing together on Saturday Night Live if you don't believe us. 29 years later, it's interesting to sit down with Nomi's music alone, sans insane visual stimuli. This, his debut album from 1981, explains why Bowie was so excited at his discovery. A vocal range that can give us something like Ricky Wilson of B52s (albeit singing in German) and epic, symphony hall-filling, countertenor operatic highs with equal skill. A set of tracks that are every bit the instrumental partners to those references. It's fun, wild, weird, theatrical, hugely entertaining and musically impressive.

Review: Fresh off the back of her recent Barbican appearance - in which she donned wearable electronic instruments and invited a guesting drill troupe to perform in front of a tartan blazer clad, wine-sipping audience - Klein is at the top of her game post-release of the album 'Harmattan'. So it comes as no surprise to see that her first ever album 'Frozen' is getting a real vinyl reissue, after an initial cassette and CD-only run. On this clear vinyl version, we're reminded of this one's influences from post-rock, city rivims, glitch, and all in between from the London composer and producer. Choral, mono, subdued and expansive, this one's like a glass-shattered memory, recollected with greater clarity than before.

Review: Ever since the release of his first solo album more than 20 years ago, German musician and producer Christian Kleine has experimented with blending and contrasting the varying textures and approaches of post-rave IDM, breakbeats, shoegaze and punk. His latest album offering, Touch & Fuse, shows he's continued to refine and perfect that combination, which is less a conscious concoction and more of a natural outcome of the music he likes. From the edgy Aphex-isms of 'Val 2' and the heavily filtered breaks of 'Reverse Angle' to the slowed down grunge meets pure electronics of 'Return of the Underground', this is unique, accomplished stuff.

Review: When it comes to creating musical soundtracks to contemporary urban decay, Gary Mundy has more experience than most. He's been releasing music as Kleistwahr since 1983 (though he did give the project a break between 1987 and 2009) and is a genuine master of creating heady, post-industrial soundscapes. 'Common Values', his 14th Kleistwahr album, is another masterclass in texture, mood and slowly shifting melody. There are moments of bittersweet, melancholic brilliance (see the immersive, reverb-laden ambience of 'Heaven Maybe Never') and pulsing, creeping minimalism (the brilliant, bleak and mournful 'Towards New Land'), but also fuzzy, guitar-laden soundscapes ('In a Blood Covered Land', 'All of Death To Lie' and the squally 'Common Values') and enveloping audio worlds subtly influenced by shoegaze ('Time To Realise').

Review: Introducing his own label OFNOT, acclaimed ambient artist KMRU presents an album which takes an inventive approach to the idea of environmental recordings. Having captured sounds from countless places encountered on his travels as an artist, he decided to explore the waveforms of these recordings and use them as a guide for his own synthesis. And by that we mean music that is inspired by and looks to invoke the natural world, its beauty and fragility, the softness of what's there if you listen hard enough beyond the human realm. Meanwhile, Andrew Esperti is an Italian-Swiss trombonist of global repute. Taking recordings of 'nature noises' from around the world, and aligning these with some seriously easy going and subtle brass tones, the result sees all those troubles, whatever they were, float away into the distance while your bed morphs into a blanket of clouds. Meditative atmospherics with incredibly potent effects.
