Review: Pakistani-American singer Arooj Aftab has consistently used her albums as a vehicle for musical experimentation, often wrapping her distinctive vocals (often delivered in urdu) in progressively minimalistic arrangements that seem to get more ethereal and becalmed with each successive release. On 'Love in Exile', her latest album, Aftab is joined by two frequent collaborators in largely improvised sessions: jazz pianist Vijay Iver and synthesiser player (and electronics wizard) Shahzad Ismaily. The results are frequently mesmerising and breathtakingly brilliant, with Aftab's haunting vocals rising above ambient, beat-free soundscapes that cannily combine suspenseful, slow-burn basslines, evocative chords and ghostly electronic textures with the twinkling, yearning piano motifs. It's a genuinely beguiling and brilliant sound that should appeal to both open-minded jazz heads and ambient enthusiasts.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: ASC returns with a deeply emotive album on Past Inside the Present, showcasing a new chapter in his musical journey. Known for his versatility across electronic and drum & bass genres, James Clements channels introspection and healing in Loss. Quiet bird calls and field recordings intertwine with ASC's expertly crafted synths, creating a therapeutic sonic landscape. Each track evokes a range of emotions, from melancholy to hope, acceptance to sorrow. Loss invites listeners to embark on a poignant journey, where ASC's mastery shines through in every moment. It's a captivating and beautiful testament to the power of music as a form of self-expression and healing.

Review: Originally released in 2005, Silenced captures the essence of The Black Dog's enigmatic allure, transporting listeners to otherworldly realms with its lush, tuneful compositions and angular genius. Each track on the album is a testament to the group's unparalleled ability to surprise and entrance, evoking a sense of both unease and beauty. For fans of The Black Dog, Silenced serves as a welcome treat, while also serving as an entry point for those new to the group's mesmerising soundscapes. Definitelt one of their best full length albums yet to date.

Review: Hype Williams may now be relegated to an amusing/puzzling yet prolific chapter in the respective solo careers of its two founding members Inga Copeland and Dean Blunt, but the mystique and obliqueness that surrounded the project remains a weapon both continue to employ. Blunt's latest solo album Black Metal is perhaps his most high profile to date, seeing him pitch up on long running UK indie Rough Trade for a 13 track journey through his singular craft. If you touched on either of the albums Blunt released last year you should have an idea of what to expect, though of course there are still plenty of surprises within.

Review: Chancha Via Circuito, AKA Argentine producer Pedro Canale, has a reputation for doing things differently. This often manifests itself in eccentric but thrillingly forward-thinking productions that join the dots between traditional South American rhythms and instrumentation, dub, hip-hop and contemporary bass music. On his latest full-length adventure - his first for nearly three years - Canale pushes the envelope further, serving up a mixture of breezy, sun-kissed takes on traditional Colombian tropes, dusty, bass-heavy hip-hop instrumentals, mind-altering South American electronica, hazy ambient interludes and life-affirming tropical pop. The result is a joyful and vibrant set that could be the producer's strongest work to date.

Review: German outfit Cluster continue to reissue of some of their most vital albums. They are a band that had an influence on artists like Brian Eno, John Foxx and Coil from their 1971 debut Cluster 71 onwards. They were fine fusionists who collided cold wave and synth sounds with disorientating atmospherics, feedback and noise as this second album in 1972 shows. It was made by the reduced duo of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius on all tracks although the third member Conny Plank is credited as a composer. It was the band's first release for Krautrock label Brain with more to follow until 1975.

Review: Elevations is a brand new album from Contours, aka Manchester-based artist Tom Burford who is a drummer and percussionist who draws on that in his always forward-thinking sounds. The album started with him exploring the Balafon, a Malian-tuned percussion instrument. Having got to grips with how to play it he expanded the work into this full length, which is an elegant and deft collection of compositions centred around the rhythmical interactions of percussion, synthesiser and strings. It draws on jazz, minimalism, Fourth World and modern classical to sooth your soul and elevate your mind.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

It's widely agreed that Island is one of the best works in the sprawling Current 93 catalogue. David Michael Tibet's quest into the more mysterious dimensions of our existence has yielded all kinds of musical results, but Island has a certain clarity and direction which lands beautifully. Created in 1990 alongside Icelandic composer Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, it's an odyssey of technoid synthesis and orchestral poise, guided by strange narration and backed by some astounding singing. You'll instantly be able to recognise the tones of a young Bjork calling through the mist on opening track 'Falling' and it's quite something to hear her indomitable voice held back in the mix. That's the level this astounding album operates at, now carefully reproduced and reissued by House of Mythology.

Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori is one that has been madly anticipated by fans. The record - which comes on wax and in a lovely embossed sleeve here - centres on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. The band's progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes, as they make do with a future-present that wasn't promised to them in the 80s, while drawing on deathly topoi and nodding to Ingmar Bergman.

Review: Hannah Diamond's Perfect Picture marks a significant evolution from her previous work, embracing a warmer and more optimistic sonic palette while retaining her signature hyper-stylized aesthetic. Produced by David Gamson, the album presents a nostalgic yet forward-thinking blend of early-aughts pop sensibilities and glitchy electronic elements. Lyrically, Diamond explores themes of self-acceptance and empowerment, cleverly intertwining meta-humor with genuine emotion. Tracks like 'Flashback,' 'No FX,' and 'Lip Sync' showcase Diamond's ability to craft infectious earworms layered with introspective depth. With nods to Eurodance and Britney Spears, Perfect Picture exudes a playful yet heartfelt sincerity, affirming Diamond's growth as both an artist and an individual.

Waxwork Records presents the iconic Body Double Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Pino Donaggio. Directed by Brian De Palma, this 1984 neo-noir erotic thriller pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock's classics, exploring themes of voyeurism and obsession. Starring Craig Wasson and Melanie Griffith, the film follows struggling actor Jake Scully, who, after witnessing a murder, delves into the seedy underworld of Hollywood's adult entertainment industry. De Palma, aiming to defy censorship, crafted an erotic and thrilling narrative. Donaggio's legendary score, including the standout track 'Telescope', masterfully blends orchestral grandeur with 80s electronic beats, perfectly capturing the film's neon-drenched ambiance and suspenseful atmosphere.

Italy's techno maestro Donato Dozzy returns with a long player on his own Spazio Disponibile, which is always a cause for celebration. Anyone familiar with Dozzy's illustrious career to date will be more than satisfied with the mood he strikes on Magda, as the subtlest of rhythmic sequences plot a course through expansive landscapes of drones and processing for a truly mesmerising experience. This is absolutely a techno work, but it's a far cry from the formulaic demands of the genre as Dozzy leans into his ambient sensibilities for an assured, refined release from a true master of the sound.

Open Water is the solo vehicle for audio engineer and Weird Weather member Duncan Thornley who hooks up with jazz greats like Greg Foat and Kaidi Akinnibi. It is an utterly blissed-out sound for happy daydreams and summery reveries with drifting sax notes, languid grooves and gentle Beatrice breezes washing over you to soothing effect.

Review: The Dedalus Ensemble have performed a collection of legendary albums by the great Brian Eno. They are Discreet Music (1975), Music For Airports (1978) And Thursday Afternoon (1985) and all of them set the blueprint for the then-new musical genre known as ambient. These versions go beyond what you might expect and take you far away from the source material but stay true to the original theories of ambient. It is music without a beginning or end and music that makes you want to get lost in its midst.

Review: Illuminating the remarkable, and largely otherwise undocumented, creative ferment within and between the British and American scenes of experimental music during the mid to late 1970s, Dialogo's box set - made in full collaboration with all of the composers or their estates - contains the entire ten album output of the label, completely remastered and housed in faithful mini-replicas of their original covers and liner notes, as well as an extensive booklet. Over the last few years, the Italian imprint has showed a remarkable dedication to the history of experimental music via reissues of seminal artefacts from the Cramps catalog, and important albums by Piero Umiliani, Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Enrico Rava, and others. This initiative now takes on a towering scale with the first ever box set gathering the entire ten album collection of Brian Eno's Obscure Records, originally issued between 1975 and 1978. A truly groundbreaking body of recordings - many of which have remained out of print and difficult to find for decades - it contains some of the most important, influential, and enduring music to emerge during the second half of the 20th Century, which collectively reconfigured the terms of Minimalism and laid the groundwork for the emerging movement of Ambient music over its short, three year run.

Review: FKA Twig's Caprisongs was the English singer-songwriter's debut mixtape back in January of last year. It's an accomplished trail through a wealth of different sounds and styles from neo-soul to trap, r&b to hyper-pop, Afro-beats to electronic abstraction. The album features spoken words intertwined between the tunes and that helps add personality to what is a captivating flow of grooves. Twigs's voice has great range as she goes from all-out sonic weirdness to melancholic angel to pop princess. Microbeats, plucky harps and music boxes add to the vibrant prediction of this most contemporary and future-sounding album.

Four Hands - "Sea Of Love" (Mammoth Mountain mix)
Four Hands - "November 2011, North Northumberland" (Zoviet France dub)
Four Hands - "Mountain Of Mammon" (Zoviet France version)
Review: The Newcastle based Signals collective have been delightfully unpredictable in their short existence to date, with releases from artists as varied as Legowelt, John Heckle and Oppenheimer Analysis also demonstrating an ear for quality that ensures the casual observer should always check in on their latest release. That honour falls on two local North East acts in the shape of sometime Claremont 56 artist Four Hands and iconic industrial figures Zoviet France. This clear twelve inch is the most creatively ambitious record from Signals yet, with the original material from Four Hands in essence a remix he did of "Mammoth Mountain", a track from the Manchester based artist Caro Snatch. Reimagined as a luscious ambient music with real attention paid to musicality, "Sea Of Love (Mammoth Mountain mix)" is a beautiful slice of music that can't fail to captivate across the almost eight minutes of its duration. Accompanying this, Zoviet France submitted two remixes, with the first - "November 2011, North Northumberland (Zoviet France dub)" - actually a recording of themselves playing the Four Hands version on a mobile phone while one of them chops wood. Complementing this slightly odd version is a sublime thirteen minute ambient piece that truly refigures the magic of Four Hands' original piece in Zoviet France's own inimitable style.

The good folks at Compost have put together a second volume of their Future Sounds of Kraut compilation and once again it is packed with exciting new takes on the age-old genres. Compiler Fred Und Luna features a couple of times including with the celestial synth charms and light electronic rhythms of 'Monotonikum' and elsewhere tried and tested talents such as Thomas Fehlmann with his widescreen cinematic cut' 'Permanent Touch' and minimal favourite Roman Flugel with his delightfully melodic and innocent 'Rules' bring plenty of class the adventurous and accomplished double album. There is plenty to get stuck into here for those who like their sounds sleek, atmospheric and star gazing.

The legendary Future Sound Of London have finally started dropping their Environments series on vinyl format, which will no doubt please the countless numbers of FSOL junkies out there! These sessions, the present title being the penultimate in a series of five, have been long sought after and they have been pivotal in shaping the sound of today's electronic dance music. Fifteen tracks in total here and the interesting thing about this album is the fact that it can be heard either as single tracks or as one developing and morphing wall of sound. All but one of these tracks, "Murmurations", are from way back and haven't seen the light of day, so get listening and indulge yourself in some pioneering sounds!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Legend has it that around 1997, The Future Sound of London decided to make an album that combined the electronic and broken trance-inducing acid the outfit were already renowned for, and progressive rock. As work continued, a decision was made to go full psyche rock, and the result was The Isness by The Amorphous Androgynous. Had the original idea come to fruition, the hybrid sounds therein might be similar to Life In Moments. Originally released in 2015, this record is one of those very special instances in which you're presented with something that genuinely sounds new. Of course, there's plenty owed, too, with moments definitely nodding to the likes of Sabres of Paradise, slow mo dark room chug and other leftfield dance. On the whole, though, the combination of late night jazz, otherworldly electronica, tripped-out space rock, ambient and movie-esque scores is pretty incomparable.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Since the mid 2000s, veteran ambient duo Future Sound of London has been doing their own thing, occasionally dropping a new installment in their Environments series of albums. This edition - 6.5 - is their second of the year, and continues the pair's tradition of blending trippy elements to create soundscapes that veer from creepy iciness (the melancholic "Some Degree of Sanctuary"), to mystical ambient dub ("Something Approaching Happiness"), via deep space explorations ("Amplification of Intelligence"), and electronic psychedelia ("Halodule"). While they've arguably sanded down their rougher and weirder edges over the years, FSOL are still capable of crafting distinctive downtempo music that's as hallucinogenic as it comes.

Review: As the 11th doctor, Matt Smith had big shoes to fill by succeeding the incredible run of the 10th doctor, David Tenant, in 2010. The alien time lord's adventures, then, were fittingly scored by 5-time BAFTA nominated composer Murray Gold and orchestrator Ben Foster. Having worked on the series since the sci-fi adventure's revival in 2005, Gold has been able to progress from relying on orchestra samples to having access to one of his own: the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with the help of Ben Foster who worked with Gold for over a decade. This, of course, has led to reinvention and, arguably, the improvement of some of the most recognisable sci-fi tracks in TV history. From the cybermen theme to the synonymous opening title sequence, the show and its music have had a big place in Britain, and the world's, hearts and is well deserving of a place in the metaphoric sci-fi music hall fo fame.

Review: Alluvium is the third in German experimental producer Stefan Goldmann's series of albums exploring the "first principles" research of metric asymmetry. Exploring new structural paths for machine rhythm in irregular metres, the album seems non-binary patterns running simultaneously, moving in and out of interlocking focus, across 12 offerings of "jagged polyrhythmic magic". With Veiki (2019) and Vector Rituals (2022) already gaining him a growing fan base for his unexpectedly constructed but melodically lush compositions, Alluvium is sure to be well received by those with an ear for the previously undiscovered terrains of leftfield electronics.

Review: While Tim Hecker has a well-earned reputation for extreme electronic experimentation, he's always been capable of delivering releases shot through with intense beauty. It's this side of Hecker's output that's explored on Love Streams, his first album for three years. Effortlessly melodious, fluid, and constantly evolving, it pairs fuzzy, drone-inspired textures, melancholic atmospherics and ear-pleasing ambient melodies, with flashes of steel drums, manipulated string arrangements, and the distinctive sound of an Icelandic choir. It's a sound palette that ensures a stream of memorable, eyes-closed moments, from the Tangerine Dream inspired "Voice Crack", to the loved-up bliss of the two-part "Violet Monumental".
